  • Here is part 3 of my soloing over figures and vamps series. In this video I demonstrate soloing over complex syncopated figures in a fusion swing feel. The track is from the book The Drumset Soloist by Steve Houghton. This book comes with a CD that has play-along tracks containing many types of solo vamps. This enables you to practice and experiment with your soloing ideas.
After I play the solo I talk briefly about playing fast complex rhythms such as these with exercises from my book Advanced Coordination for Drum Set and Hand Percussion. The book is available from me at rickdior@gmail.com if you are interested.

The one good thing about this Covid thing is that like many others have gone back to the practice room and I pulled out many of my old books and recital pieces that I played back in the day. I am practicing more now than I did since my 20s. Today I watched your video on effective practice and loved every word you said. I have a couple more years before I retire and then I want to go back to schoolFor a masters in
percussion performance. I currently play jazz and rock in various bands and work as a section percussionist in our local Symphony orchestra. Thank you for your inspiration I’ll be watching all your videos!

I am a 67-year-old drummer/percussionist who has had a career as a high school band director and weekend warrior musician. I have a Masters degree in music education and a bachelors in percussion performance. If I lived in your state I would definitely study with you for a masters in percussion performance. You would be perfect!

      Hi Jim
Thanks for the comment and for watching.
It was my high school band director who was greatly responsible for inspiring me to become a professional musician so you can imagine how much I respect you for your lengthy career.
If you are ever in my neck of the woods please look me up.
      Rick
