Ive been feeling overwhelmed with life lately so i decided to start to make changes in my home...i brought up a laundry basket and walked through each room upstairs and removed anything "extra" and, in the wnd, I removed two baskets of knick knacks and art that I i had been putting on shelves and walls byt was no ponger bringing me any joy. After that i went down to the basement and cleaned out the utility space and piled everything in the middle of the rec room floor. I took pictures of the pile and put it on Facebook. It was all gone within an hour! It left me room to store some of the items i had removed from upstairs and to see if i want them in the future. It always amazes me how much lighter i feel and how less anxious when my spaces are a little less crowded. We went on holidays the next week and my sister in law took care of the houseplants. I warned her that i had removed a lot of stuff and not to worry that we had been burgled 😂 and, incredibly, she thought the house looked exactly the same as it always does!! She couldnt tell i removed anything! So i learned that your house doesn't need to be over decorated to be cozy and beautiful ❤️
Check out "The Minimal Mom." She has a lot of videos about how clutter feeds anxiety. It's very interesting. (She also has many tips on how to get rid of the stuff!)
That's awesome!! That lighter feeling is addictive :)
I keep a permanent toss-donate split hamper on my upstairs landing. I found a pretty wicker split hamper. Now there's a permanent spot to place donate-toss items. It kind of avoids the "big clean out clutter day." It's more on the regular. It gives us a little time to consider if we actually want to donate or toss also ... I clean it out once a month.
It's very helpful to see you re-donate items you've thrifted fairly recently. It can be hard to let go of things we've bought recently that just didn't work out. Thank you for the motivation.
It's hard for me too, but if I keep it for another year and then eventually donate it, what have I gained except for having to look at it sitting there all year?
Love this video. I too am getting real about what we use and what we don't. Since the start of the new year I have donated 6 full trash bags of clothes I don't love or wear, 60 DVDs we would never watch again, lots of books, housewares, and games we just weren't using. My home is feeling so much more peaceful and I'm not even done! Thanks for the motivation boost! ❤
That's so wonderful, enjoy your fresh spaces!!
I quit buying chicken stock and now I buy the powdered chicken bouillon. The quality is really good, tastes great, saves me money and space!
I have select when are children were littles (mostly Christmas art) and now grandchildren artwork that I have placed in frames that are interspersed on my family gallery wall; I change the grandchildren’s artwork with their parents artwork during the Christmas season, all of them always smile and make comments on those pieces every time they come over. When we were young in our marriage, we didn’t have a lot of anything and when we could afford the “things”, we sure went overboard, over the past 11 years we have pretty much stocked 2 young couples apartments with small appliances, pieces of furniture, some area rugs we were no longer using, cookware and bakeware sets (I had 4 sets of each that were all in great shape), cutlery in storage because I didn’t like them anymore, even cleaning products because I went way overboard with back stock. Bless others if you can with your declutter items because a young couple or someone restarting their life could really use them. I am about selling items but, I look at it this way- I spent the $, it’s been sitting in a box or closet for several years so I am at break even $ wise and I am in a good place financially, so if I can bless someone who isn’t in a good place financially or just starting out, I will do that before trying to sell those things or I will bring them to our local church thrift stores to help support the churches.
Inspirational! I love the phrase be honest with yourself when purging!!
Metal scrapers might come get your old dryer. They do it in my city. I put out an old washer and dryer and within hours a truck came by and just loaded it up and drove away
Some come around on trash day & just take it. Someone took our old gas grill that way.
We challenged ourselves last year to whittle down the number of spices and condiments we have on hand. It just getting out of hand. So many spices, but we tend to use the same over and over. Condiments taking up an entire shelf in fridge plus the one door seems ridiculous for a household of 2. An entire year later...we've definitely made progress but the challenge continues! Happy New Year, Hillary.
That's a good challenge, and definitely ongoing :)
I dont mind games and puzzles being visible. It says "family." I bought a used old low small bookshelf, gave it a quick refinish ... and put all our boxed games, puzzles in it. On the top i have a beautuful plant and two wicker baskets for smaller games (playing cards, etc). It got them all off the top shelf of my coat closet (do we all store them there?) ... and it looks lovely, imo.
Just sold my Singer sewing machine this afternoon and it felt so good to free up the space that it took up. It was a heavy clunk with a lot of accessories and I am so happy to have found it another home!!🧵🪡
I'm at a stage in my life where I'm starting to stop changing up decor as much. I'm learning how to reuse the same items and making things look different. Kind of a being thankful for what I have and not pursuing new so much.
I’m in a new stage of decorating as well, I cleared up and packed away, cutting back on the clutter, but am instead rotating. I’m not purchasing much new. I want to have the things I enjoy, but reduced the clutter. I think it is creating more pleasure and appreciation for my collection. It’s occupying my time better as well. Life now has a different activity level then it did, and this suits this stage.
I enjoy these types of videos. Decluttering seems to be on everyones mind this time of year. Once again you got me motivated! Can't wait for any video you choose to do. It is like therapy for me when I watch you. Honestly, Thank you for starting off my morning Hillary.
Thank you so much for being here!!
I love the way your mud room turned out! The new door and windows make the room so bright and open! That bread recipe looks so delicious! You are such a blessing! Your family is so fortunate to have you!!! ❤
Beautiful! I did a reorganization on my pantry. Not pretty but organized and clean. I am 30 miles from a town with a decent grocery store and 70 miles from better grocery stores, Costco and Walmart so i don't subscribe to minimalism. But love me some tidy and organized.
Love the quilts!
I started decluttering after Christmas. It feels so good each time I take a few boxes to Goodwill. Your daughter’s quilts are so pretty. Love your videos. So inspiring.
Decluttered 75% of our stuff 6 months ago when we moved. I’ve been going through everything and doing as you have done this past week. Feels good to be living as a minimalist. A few more areas to tackle but your video has encouraged me to finish the tasks. I also have been using your 2024 planner cleaning lists to help keep up on things.
These are my favourite kind of videos being a minimalist myself, it always gives me more motivation to live a more meaningful life.
I agree so much with the wisdom you shared- sometimes we don’t need to buy organizational things, but need to have less things. I love beautiful throw pillows, but they just get in the way. Thrifting is a way to be frugal, but we can also overspend when thrifting. I love what I have and don’t buy anything new (or used) “just to have it”. That really is a blessing, to be content and love what I have.
Great progress.
Happy new year! Loved this! Definitely need to do lots of decluttering here!!!
Great job decluttering!! ❤🎉 It’s an excellent time of year for that! I’m doing the same thing!
Thank you! Truly enjoyed
Great job!! ❤️
Such a great decluttering video! I am inspired to do the same!
Great job!
While the video may not introduce groundbreaking organizing techniques, its simplicity and relatability make it a useful resource for those seeking a straightforward and effective approach to decluttering and organizing in the year ahead.
I’m so glad you kept your original kitchen cabinets. They are so well made and unique (love the little door). The addition of extra shelving at the tops of your closets is ingenious. You have honored the year of your home while making it more functional for your family. You are a TRUE homemaker💕 Your family is blessed to have you💗
Thank you for the motivation!
Thanks for the inspiration!
Great video! Tyfs🏡💕
Great job,I find it so hard to get rid of things,it's easier if you know someone who needs the items. Hoping to do better this year.
Thank you, Hilary! You gave me motivation to do the same in my home. It's nice starting the new year with a clean slate.
I love your decor!
Wow, you really got a lot done! You’ve inspired me to organize my spice cabinet!
I keep my baking spices, powders, sprinkles food colorings etc separate from my cooking spices, herbs, powders too. It just helps to keep things tidy.
It all looks amazing Hillary!
Thank you so much for this video. It was greatly needed, as I have several spots in my home that need attention. Sometimes it can be hard to let go of items, you always think, I may need that some day. However, it was helpful to see how much you donated, and how much that was going to bless other people. Thank you for the inspiration, and now I look forward to doing the same in my home. God bless!
Really lovely clean and organized video.
What a feeling of peace to clean and organize!
Thank you.
Thanks for sharing, Hilary ❤
Wow! You have been so busy! Looks amazing!
Love this so much! So many times I find that just cleaning the space and decluttering makes a space feel brand new! I love to use what I have around the house rather than purchasing - brings new life to old items! Happy New Year! 🎉
Excellent job Hilary! Happy new year!! 🎉🕊️☺️
I've been decluttering and organizing all week! It feels so good.
Thank you for the inspiration.
I love this type of video. You did a great job, especially the front closet and the basement. I remember seeing an earlier video where you purged and organized the basement storage room. It's nice to know it's not just me who has things pile up and get disorganized again.
So glad you are back!
Very much motivating to clean up my place too! Thank you for sharing! 🌻🙏🏼
You have inspired me! My spice cupboard needs some help and I have boxes of Christmas ornaments and decor we just don’t use anymore, so I will be donating!!
Happy New Year! Your spice cabinet and baking cabinet do look pretty...and I agree, I enjoy cooking more in my kitchen when it looks pretty and welcoming!
My Grandson loves to shred for me...Saves me time. I pay him with a Hot Chocolate
It’s wonderful to show we can all do this !!! We all have to much stuff and we just keep stuffing the stuff ….. I also declutter after the holidays !!! It’s such a great feeling !!! Happy New year !!!
You're such an inspiration. Thanks
Decluttering Christmas decorations looks so easy when you do it! When I do it I struggle so much with having not enough space for all the lovely things I have. So I should get of some but the decisions which to get rid off seem so difficult.
Always feels great to declutter and organize and straighten up storage areas. I did it the day I took down Christmas decor. I was surprised how much more room I had after clearing out and gathering items to donate. Great goal to have every year for sure. Thanks Hillary.
Finally I found out what that cute little side cabinet is. It is such a cute idea to have in your kitchen! I have often wondered what it was used for. Less things is the goal for me or a larger home(which I would fill with more stuff!). Thanks for bringing us into 2024 with declutter sanity!
So relatable and I’m motivated to tackle all these sieves as well! Thank you Hilary for another lovely video! 💝
Happy New Year! ✝️
The girls’ new bedding is so pretty! That’s such a great idea for a Christmas gift.
Good morning Hillary! Awesome job, thank you for all your inspirational videos!
About the dryer you have to get rid of. We put ours to the curb, and the local scrap person picked it up. Many people who sell scrap love it when people sit these items out. Have a great weekend! 👋
You have no idea how excited I am to see this video this morning!!
This past year we have really let our unfinished basement go (and let’s be real the whole house, but mostly the basement) had a high risk twin pregnancy where I was extremely sick the majority of the 9 months. Now our babies are here and we are adjusting- we are ready to tackle our basement this weekend before the extreme cold hits our area and our dogs need a cozy place to cuddle up and hang out! Our basement is so bad right now we can barely walk through it 😅 horrible I know. Never thought I would have a space get like this. Thank you so much for taking the time to bring us along with you! ❤ happy new year Hillary!
Wow what a kickstart ! The easy-to-follow tips and budget-friendly ideas made me feel like organizing doesn't have to be overwhelming. I'm ready to tackle my space with a fresh perspective after watching this video!
the old sheet are so pretty too • maybe you can repurpose it for a sewing project
Thanks for this nice relaxed video Hilary. It was just what I needed. I am cleaning out my kitchen cupboards as we speak! Decorations came down on the 2nd and living room all de cluttered. Thanks for the motivation.
I love it when a decluttering project comes to fruition in a beautiful way. I, too, revisit the cabinet, closet, etc. many times to admire the space.
I do that after I've cleaned my oven!😆
Love this! You are so right that we don’t more containers…we need less stuff. 😊
God bless the work of your hands, Hilary ! 😊😊
How I admire you ! I have a very hard time "letting things go". It makes for a big mess !!! You have encouraged me to get up and just do it !
Great job we all have way too many things. I find getting things out of the house and letting go of stuff makes one feel so much better good start to a great years too.
These are my favorite kind of videos. Everything looked so nice when you were finished! Oh-and I loved the girls’ new quilts. So pretty!
I decluttered before the holidays and then thought I'm done for a while. AND, then I tackled my overflow closet and realized there was so much more to declutter. I'm a minimalist at heart, so I was surprised to find more I could donate. I feel so much lighter! Love the girls new bedding, the spice cabinet, and your front closet. Great job, Hilary!! Happy New Year friend!✨💖
Happy New Year Hillary 🎉
I love the spice cabinet, it looks so great…the inside of my cabinets are just as important to me, I cook a lot, and like you said it just makes me happy to see an organized cabinet when I open it.. if we’re going to be in the kitchen we might as well have something nice to look at😊
Loveeeee the girls bedding❤
A space to make me smile. I love it!!!!
This video is exactly what I needed for a productive start to the year. The storage hacks and decluttering ideas are simple yet effective. The host's upbeat approach makes the whole organizational process seem less daunting and more achievable.
I have spice jars similar to those and love them! My cabinet is so pretty and it's easy to tell what spices we are low on. If you have kids artwork that is hard to part with take pics of it and then throw them away! I have framed a few of my favorite pieces.
Hilary these are by far some of my favorite videos that you do! So incredibly inspirational. Though I'm a Professional Organizer and have a tidy home, life gets busy and we all have those spots! I'm definitely going to tackle mine today! Thank you! Also Happy New Year! Praying that it's blessed and full of joy for you and your family!💕
I’ve used linoleum to line my cabinets which really brightened up the cabinets and makes wiping them out a breeze. It’s an inexpensive touch that makes opening the cabinets that much more enjoyable. Your spice cabinet looks great.
Good morning, Hilary! SOO good to have you back and I hope your holidays were lovely!! Great new year video, thank you!! I am so inspired now, haha!! I'm actually looking forward to decluttering, now!!:) Tale care!
Enjoy! Good to be back :)
Your video has been so inspiring! I’m hoping to purge some of my Christmas decor too! I haven’t put anything away yet, had to work this week. I’m hoping to get started tomorrow! Happy New Year! You sound like you might have a cold - please take care!🤗🙏
I have really missed your videos, and are so glad you are back! Happy New Year!
Glad to be back, thank you!
Hello I stop buying decor a while back I use what we have.
I really enjoy your CZcams channel, you have such a calm and joyful attitude! Great job tackling those less-fun spaces, it's so inspiring. Everything looks so fresh and manageable! I haven't taken down my Christmas decorations yet, as my family is still enjoying them. But I plan to declutter when I start to take stuff down. Happy New Year!!
I did the same with my spices but also added a date to ensure my spices are fresh.
The only organizing I needed to do after Christmas was on January 1st as I was taking down the decorations, I went through all of the bins and sorted what I kept and what I got rid of which was quite a lot. So now Christmas this year will be fresh, organized and ready to be put up once again. 😀❄☃💗
I absolutely love quilts and the girls quilts were gorgeous, I’m trying to remove anything from our home that isn’t getting used, the worst things are the sentimental ones, they pull on your heart strings Hilary, love all the motivation xx
I saw those sheets you bought for your daughters and put them on my Amazon Wish List; a family member scooped them up 3 days later and sent them to me! I agree - I washed them and they were a little wrinkled and not as ‘satiny’ as they felt pre-wash but they’re lovely and I can’t wait to start using them in the Spring.
Great job! 😁🙌 I've been in an organizational mood myself this week.... even cleaned out my spice cabinet. Lol.
Wonderful!
I love all the organization. I wish I had a room like you have in your basement for organized storage. I have no basement ,no attic and no shed. Storage is just in our house and what we can fit (like our Christmas boxes and tree) on the edge of our one car garage.
Very beautiful! I need to repeat your phase, “I’m just going to let it go.” to help me as I simplify more of our spaces in our home. Thanks for the inspiration
Well, this is what I need to do is get into those closets and start getting things thrown away. You’re doing a great job you’ve already got on top of it. Thanks so much for sharing.
My car is loaded down donate items as well. 😂 Too much stuff came in this holiday season. Christmas is still up at our house. I love the lights in the dreary days of January. We take everything down after making king cake on Epiphany. Happy New Year!🎉
The top of that closet is huge! I can't believe all that was up there! Looks so much better, good job!
Tremendous job on basement! But you make it look so easy. Not all people can just donate. Must be stored for garage sale weather!
This video is enough motivation for me. Happy New Year!
So funny I did the same thing …I love my new spice jars….Happy New Year 😊❤️
Inspirational as always. Have a wonderful 2024 x
Thank you for being here!
Oh wow, you are exactly the channel I have been searching for. You combine today’s life with past ages of slow living just perfectly! Most CZcamsrs are way beyond realistic (like living in the 1800’s) in todays time😂. You combine the lifestyles of both eras so well. I just found your channel and I am finding myself binge watching every one of your videos! So blessed to have found you! Keep up the good work and God Bless you and yours❤️
So glad you’re here! Just a mom trying to do her best 😌
Loved this video!
I also put my spices in matching containers and absolutely love it! It’s helped me know which ones I truly use and is just so nice to look at when you open the cabinet. A game changer for sure!
Yes and amen!
Thanks for sharing this inspiring video.
I found some battery operated motion sensing lights that I put in my linen and storage closets. I wish I had done that years ago, it makes such a difference to have a light come on when you open the closet! I hear ys! I might iron my pillow cases, but I am not ironing my sheets.
