So additive poses are basically a blending of another animation on top of a “basic” animation? That’s quite a clever way to get around having to animate different models for each action.
If there’s one thing sprite animation has to do a lot of, it’s lots of separate animations for each action. No wonder loops are so useful when animating with sprites.
I know right, it's a great, efficient way to get lots done.
I nearly, neeeeearly thought you'd cut the "loveyoubye". Such a tease! I think some of the best contextual animation I've seen has to be in Conker's Bad Fur Day. I'm sure there's a separate animation for being chased whereby Conker tucks his bum in and arches his back to avoid being swiped at. Brilliant. Ace video Dan!!
I think you may be the only subscriber who watches my videos right till the end. I'm glad you noticed!
I'll have to double check that animation, though you may be right!
Thanks Ben
I just hope that the CZcams RNGorithm Blesses you channel
to make one or two of your videos get recommended to people.
Your channel is so underrated.
Yeah this series has really slowed things down, which is a shame. Thanks for watching!
Another excellent video! I'm always amazed at how well you do at bringing in footage to match the kind of animation you're talking about!
Love that Catwoman/Batman comparison!
Thank you!
If I took a bit more time in this series I'd ideally have slowed down and enhanced the footage with notes as well, but I'm glad it's not just talking over gameplay, haha.
5;10 at that part you got me thinking the spiderman game was coop
This video was actually helpful because I have to do my own animations for a project and this made a lot of things that should've seemed obvious to me, a lot more apparent. Thanks. ^_^
Your videos are exceptionally interesting and very very well written ! I sometimes struggle to understand everything because english is not my native laguage but keep yp the good work it's very good :)
Hey thank you! Sorry that I can't add any additional languages to my subtitles, but I hope you can get something from my videos!
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy Thanks for answering to me. Do not worry I can understand enough to learn a lot of things !
This has been a great series.
Alot of retro games sadly fail in context. Castle of Illusion on the Sega MegaDrive is an example as even though Minnie is kidnapped, Mickie casually strolls even when facing bosses. This is one of the fundamentals in which fails, depending on how much memory you have in the game file. I see this less often than other fundamentals due to how it's become bigger more recently. 2D games mainly fail at this and it works much better with 3D.
Great video!
Thanks! Well, another thing you have to consider is the budget, resource and limitations of your game and hardware. Retro games can't exactly help being fairly basic, but I think they did fairly well considering.
I think it's more of an issue in modern gaming where these things need to be thought about more.
Thanks for watching!
Caught this right when it dropped! Excited to see another installment. Keep up the great vids! 👍
These videos are really helping me. I appreciate and thank you for all your efforts!
Using Batman's Genesis/MD music in his section was amazing!
THANK U FOR THIS SERIES BRO GONNA WATCH THESE FOREVER
Great video as always.
My favorite exemple of using animation out of context is in Chrono Trigger, were they used frames of characters climbing latters and picking up their swords for a cute dancing animation
Nice! Yeah I like that!
Can I know what is the mobile game at 6:35 ?
And keep the good work !
Edit : No it's okay it reappears later with it's name !
The background music for the first quarter of the video made me feel so relaxed. Where is that from?
Sorry, I've just added it all to the description. I think you're on about the Ancient Cistern from Skyward Sword?
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy yes! Oh man it complimented your voice and commentary so well. It was like perfect ASMR.
i applied for a computer games and animation course and ngl kinda nervous so im watching a bunch of these videos that revolve or link to anything with game animation, i'm new, i've only made a few animations, i mean i only used rigs in blender, i'm not the best at that software, i don't know much but i do hope to learn more with the couese, but i'm like 15- well actually by the time the course starts i'll be 16. and there will probably be alot of older people taking that course, i gotta say its intimadating. this will be if i do well in the interview WHICH BTW IS MAKING ME SO NERVOUS. ok i've done my rant, goodday;
Good luck, you'll be absolutely fine!!
Man Dan this video came out just in time, I was getting really board for some reason
Could you show GodHand in a video? I was so intrigued when i played that game in PlayStation 2, those were the best animations i had ever seen.
There is this "moike kobe" in youtube whom still makes videos about the game, he might help you with material.
Yo dude, have you played and or analyzed all 3 metroid 2 games?
Which includes GB, AM2R and Samus returns for 3DS, an analysis which compares the aesthetic presented on all 3 games maybe?
I've studied Metroid II and I'll be studying Samus Returns later (I'm doing each game in release order) but I may or may not do AM2R, as it's not an official game.
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy not an official game but at its base, it so polished that is worth mentioning, All the little details make it feel as an authentic metroid game, to colourful landscapes to dark passageways with the metroids lurking or the derelict GF ship that shares an aesthetic with Fusion's dead corridors of BSL, (it's so great dude) anyway, have a good day mate :)
~2:25 Okay, I *HAVE* to know what this music track is. Does anyone know?
Edit: Well. Um... The description is a thing, apparently. No clue why I didn't think to look there...
Music's in the description ;-)
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy *facepalm* I honestly don't know why I didn't look there... I don't know, maybe it's because it's early in the morning and I didn't get much sleep.
@@Rainbowmon i dont blame you. Honestly too many youtubers dont put their song choices in the descriptions. I commend this channel for doing it, it should be the norm but usually commenters need to ask eachother for help like you did.
@@ordinarytree4678 Tell me about it...
If possible, turn on subtitles for the video. I'm Brazilian and I use them to better understand what is said in the video.
Thanks - they're on most videos, I think this one (maybe some others) slipped through.
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy Thank you very much, the content is great and is helping me a lot with my studies.
Can you make a video for Mega Man Zero 4?
Why 4, specifically?
This is what bothers me in resident evil. In 2 we found how cool it was when they walked differently when they got hurt. In 5 they recycled so many animations for the players and the enemies i really cant take my head off this and just play the game.
Hold up you can play as catwoman? I should’ve known in a game like 3D Batman almost anything was possible
It's DLC but still fun
9:14 😘
Who's Johnathan?

I though you were Johnathan, referring yourself in the third person while promoting your book
2:24 Noo the t in Batman is bigger than the m why font whhy
Kliefer I felt your pain when I saw it as well
Just how the font is
The fact that you felt the need to mention gender politics only because the characters are distinctive members of their sexes shows how ridiculous our culture has become
That's the truth.
catwoman's animations are completely ridiculous. don't try to defend them.
Ridiculous in the sense that "oh, all these people are getting worked up over nothing", or ridiculous in the sense that "these outrageous gender stereotypes are somehow still a thing".
I _really_ hope you mean the latter.
@@hyperhedgehog7 A woman dressing up like a cat who is in love with a dude who dresses up like a bat is, in fact, fantasy. Last time I checked, fantasy is supposed to be about having some fun and exaggerating
@@DrPumpkinz gender stereotypes are outrageous? Look up the science of sex appeal- I mean only our speacies is at stake
Gris is pronounced "gree", the S is silent.
The Spanish developers say it's pronounced _"Grease"._
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy Really? I always thought it was "gree".
It depends where it's from. "Gris" in this case is Spanish for grey, which they say is pronounced "grease". Which version are you thinking of?
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy I was thinking French, which is the same meaning but different pronunciation.
