  • The story of Bass Reeves - a runaway slave from Texas who became a deputy U.S. marshal, bringing some 3,000 scoundrels to justice while he wore his badge - is finally being told in a new Paramount+ series, "Lawmen: Bass Reeves." Correspondent Lee Cowan talks with star David Oyelowo, and with biographer Art Burton, about bringing the largely forgotten story of Reeves to light.

Taylor Sheridan, the man who created Yellowstone is an executive producer of this Bass Reeves mini series.
And Taylor is pretty phenomenal when it comes to accuracy of a subject. It actually important to him, to get things right.

@@westendlawn Don't have Paramount+ so I have to wait for it to hit another streaming service but I hope you are right. Have not seen any of the "Yellowstone" shows but I have heard good things about them. I noticed the title is "LawMEN" not "LawMAN" so I wonder if they are going to do a bunch of limited series, each featuring a different lawman. That could be good, especially for a history buff like myself.

Delroy Lindo played Bass Reeves in The Harder They Fall, an awesome black neo-western on Netflix, with the all-star cast of Idris Elba, Regina King, Jonathan Majors, LaKeith Stanfield and Zazie Beetz. I wrote my final college paper on Bass Reeves. I live in Arkansas and was amazed that no one had heard of him. Details were scare about the US Marshall. Professor Art Burton was the only real source I could find. I contacted him and he went out of his way to help me any way he could. I doubt he remembers me but I will always be grateful for his kindness. Bass Reeves was indeed the "real deal" and it makes my heart sing that he is finally getting his due. If you are ever in NW Arkansas (Fort Smith), you can find a statue of Marshall Reeves and his trusty horse located next to Judge Parker's gallows.

It was mind-blowing to discover that the Lone Ranger was based on the adventures of Bass Reeves. History has always been my favorite subject but Reeves was never mentioned when I was in high school. Just like the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921 was ignored by schools. There is a lot of black history that has been suppressed or whitewashed. Now, today's technology is bringing a lot of truths to light.

Who knew, not me! Back when I went to school, 50’s and 60’s, there wasn’t any black history or American Indian history. We didn’t even graduate learning about WW1, barely touching on WW2 and nothing about the Korean War. Vietnam was happening at the time so we definitely didn’t touch on that in school. Luckily my parents were both vets of WW2 so I learned at home what the schools didn’t teach us. My brother was in Vietnam and there was a lot of news coverage, I also learned from my peers.
Sadly nothing was taught about the contribution and struggles of the black community.
At 73 I continue to learn with an open mind daily.
Now I have another book to read.

No, The Lone Star Ranger is what the Lone Ranger is based on. It was published in 1915, but was itself a reworking of a couple different versions by the same author, Zane Grey.

@@loudrimshot And allow me to go on a bit. I put a similar response in a few other comment threads so I may have been a little tired by the time I typed the one to you….
I completely agree with you. First of all I’m not dismissing any connection between the two, it’s just Lone Ranger wasn’t specifically based on Bass Reeves. HOWEVER, there are some really interesting coincidences between Reeves life and the embellishments of the Lone Ranger from the original story he was based on. The tricky part is that there’s nothing verifiable by document or testimony. But the facts are entertaining.
I personally like to think there is a connection, because I love both, but I also don’t think there needs to be a connection. Bass should stand on his own merits, and I worry that when people start claiming that the Lone Ranger was based on him, because it’s a weak argument to make, Reeves will be diminished along with the claim. So for me personally, I think it’s an intriguing anecdote, but don’t want the rising awareness of Bass Reeves to be tethered too strongly to that claim.
I’ve been watching for a while wondering when they’d finally do Bass Reeves some justice, so thank goodness it’s finally come. I haven’t watched the show yet but we’re getting paramount next month and then I’m going to sit down and indulge it!

The Lone Ranger was actually based on a Zane Grey story titled the Lone Star Ranger. His origin and everything is taken from that story which was published long before the Lone Ranger came out. There was a book written about Bass Reeves that pointed out similarities between Reeves and the Lone Ranger and then people have taken that and run with it to make absolute claims that Lone Ranger is based on Bass Reeves.
Bass is his own man deserving of all the honor he receives for being who he was and what he did regardless of similarities to anyone else, real or imagined.

    I was shocked.
Why we say Black History is American History.

My gr-grandfather (mother's side) who lived to be 108 yrs old, purportedly ran into Bass out in open territory, in OK. He also ran into Cochise, as well.
My gr-grandfather supposedly couldn't take his eyes off this "law man". Wondered who would / how he got away with "dressing so fancy".
Bass supposedly asked in a very gruff mean tone, " ANYTHING wrong". To which my gr-grandfather said, " No. No sir. I don't suppose there is"....and kept on trucking.
    Lol
Gr-grandaddy had sense enough NOT to turn around on his horse.

david oyelowo is a miscast he's 5ft 10 playing a legendary figure who was 6ft 2" at a time when average height was between 5ft 7" n 5ft 10" bass reeves towered over men.. also his distinctive mustache was scaled down probably to compensate for the small body size of david oyelowo so he wouldn't resemble the cartoon character yosemite sam

With all the caucasian westerns it's great a buffalo soldier as it were like Bass is being commemorated. Bring some episodes to New Mexico when the strike ends. Plenty of film infrastructure to tell his story!

@@steveconn and when they did, they became EX Buffalo Soldiers. They were only Buffalo Soldiers while in the employ of the US Army. You are right in that about 25% of cowboys in the old West were black men, either former slaves or freed men but lumping them together with the Buffalo Soldiers doesn't give credit to either group. Also, the term became a derogatory nickname for any army regiment made up of black men during WW1 and WW2. It changed from a name of pride to almost an epithet used by the white units.
