  • Bass Reeves was born into slavery, escaped during the Civil War, and eventually became a Deputy U.S. Marshal, out of Fort Smith, working for Hanging Judge Isaac Parker.
Reeves would cross the Arkansas River, on the trail of outlaws across more than 75,000 square miles in Indian and Oklahoma territories. Many of them were killers. ***

I just learned of Bass Reeves from Bill O'Reilly book LEGENDS AND LIES: THE REAL WEST... Bass was criticized by his family for becoming a Marshal. Once a slave they couldn't understand why he'd work for the white man. He said something about without law and order the violence would continue. He was a badass

i agree with the theory about the black mask too. No way would they have written stories about a black guy back in the day of such a prejudiced world, but at the same time, they wanted to preserve the "black" element somehow.

Another example of how AfroAmerican History has been changed to HIS STORY!! I was told that the depiction of the Lone Ranger was taken from his Legendary life as a US Marshall. What many don’t know is he also rode a White horse. The beginning of the LR series the White Actor wore a Black Mask. Why would aWhite Actor need a mask when he was almost always seen in Daylight? Maybe a homage to Bass for those Who knew the Truth or to emulate that Blacks were “Invisible” as in not being acknowledged in Society. The fact that he was a Slave, fought together with the Crow Nation, became a Cop, arrested hundreds of Criminals as a BlackMan including his son, was used by the Military to kill Native Americans and in the end after 32+ years in Law Enforcement, wasn’t allowed to be buried in the same Cemetery as Whites only shows that things really haven’t changed in 100 + years. We can’t go forewards in America as long as the Past is never addressed. The FACT that the Truth will set You free is the reason WHY so many White Americans criticize the CRT!! Because they don’t want to see how INHUMANE they’ve been throughout the History of America so they ELIMINATED the accomplishments of Peoples of Color to push their PROPAGANDA that without Them there’d be no America. When in FACT America would probably not be as Racist had they stayed in Europe? To be a Senior and hear this for the FIRST time is very frustrating. I just saw a Documentary called “Black Far West” which showed the Journey of the Africans to Slave, to being a Free Man with no possessions or Rights, to today. One thing stays consistent in America’s HIS STORY and that’s the Violence, Injustice, and how the use of Fear and Racism has been used even to this Day. And how HYPOCRITICAL America’s Justice System is when groups like BLM, The Black Panther Party, or many other Organizations that stand for Human Rights are criticized or disbanded, and the most Racist Organizations with its Foundation coming a few months AFTER the Slaves were “Freed” the KKK exists even TODAY with Members of Congress on their Membership lists. Vote any color but Red or Our Nation will be sent BACKWARDS to the Days of old. Where the Rights of Peoples of Color, Women, Those with another Religion, or Sexual Preference will have NO RIGHTS.

He became a police officer because the Jim crow law wouldn't allow him to be a Marshall anymore.
