Nice! What a relief to hear that you don't limit yourself to Carpenters/pop style music, as great as Karen Carpenter was, the pop orchestral treatment of most of her songs limited her appeal to wider audiences. Music with weight and substance can be made in pop format as Karen proved with her body of work, but sometimes it is an uphill battle. Eva Cassidy , Ann Wilson, and Ann Lenox are all performers to admire, so excited to see where your talent and taste take you!
I agree with your K. Carpenter comment. The "dated" arrangements were probably R. Carpenter's fault. But there is also a risk in singing songs you like, rather than songs your voice is tailored for. An example is Allison Iraheta, who had a fabulous voice for ballads but her dream was to be a "rocker chick". The problem was her voice distorted at high volumes giving a slight fingernail-on-chalkboard effect. Bilingual, she would have been a great star singing English and Spanish ballads.

Tori has a great voice and is an impeccable Karen Carpenter sound-alike. The question with this song is, is she trying for an accurate cover or her interpretation of Heart's iconic hit? If she's going for an original sounding cover, it lacks the song's intensity and drive inherent in the original. It's almost like she's doing a Carpenter's version of Heart & Ann Wilson's vocal. Slower tempo with glossed edges. Ann is notable for her tremendous range and fierce intensity, and in this song Tori misses that mark, IMO. OTOH, if this is her interpretation, homage, to the Heart classic, then that's a different story and she is entitled to do her version in her own way.
Just let her sing it how she wants to in her own right. I hope she tries to steer away from being a "cover artist" and just goes for being her own self artist who occasionally sings other singers' songs. You don't hear Wynonna, Celine, Adele, Streisand, etc., etc., deliberately try to sound like another artist that they're covering. They're just singing the freaking song in honor of another artist. This whole "sound exactly like another artist" is ridiculous. Who wants wannabe copycats? I don't. I love an artist who can put a different twist on a classic song like this. You go, Tori! Beautiful! And Great Job!
I would agree she doesn't have as "powerful" a voice as Ann Wilson but I would say this is Tori doing her own take on the song. That's regarding the guitar play and the vocals.
