- My incredibly talented new friend Tori Holub sings The Carpenters' Bacharach/David Medley - I wanted to add the dimension of a 'Richard' harmony part to her beautiful 'Karen' vocals! I am so honored to be allowed to join her!
By request, here is the background on how Tori & I began our collaborations!
I’ve been a musician all of my life. Being an instrumental music teacher, I had a background in playing most band/orchestral instruments. I had joined a now-defunct music collaboration website in 2015 called ‘Bandhub’, allowing me to meet and record music with musicians from around the world. Many of those collaborations resulted in life-long friendships. One of the music projects I had hosted was ‘We’ve Only Just Begun’, combining the great talents of trumpeter Gary Badger, from Sydney Australia, Ynping Mak, violinist also from Sydney Australia, bassist Clayton Whisenant from Los Angeles, and Yoann Palacio, a drummer from Quebec, Canada. The original singer for the project was a lovely young lady from the Netherlands, Gea van Veen, who we suddenly lost in 2019. She was one of my favorite backing vocalists for several projects I had recorded over the years, but she never really tried any lead parts until the Carpenters project. Since that time, I had always been on the lookout for a singer who could faithfully capture the ‘Karen ‘ sound.
One night in February 2024, I was reading some comments while listening to some Carpenters covers, and notice someone had mention Tori’s name. My natural curiosity led me to search for her. I came across Tori’s shorts on one of her social media sites, and her full-length Burt Bacharach arrangement on CZcams. I just could NOT stop listening. She did such a beautiful job of the vocal lead and harmonies, and I was beyond impressed. I have a pretty decent ear, so I thought to myself that it would be fun to add a ‘Richard’ part to her ‘Karen’. Knowing that the Carpenters had achieved their signature harmony sound by not only recording the four part harmonies, but also singing each of those parts three times over to thicken the voice sounds into that silky sound we’ve all come to know and love. I proceeded to add the lowest ‘Richard’ part to her glorious Bacharach medley recording, tripling the tracks, and combined it all together including an accompanying video to Tori’s existing one. I wouldn’t put it online unless I contacted Tori for her approval. I sent her a message and to my amazement, she absolutely loved what I did, and the connection was born. I had posted it on Facebook, as she also did, and it began to gain some traction instantly. I then realized that Tori had several one minute recordings she made of several Carpenters songs, but none that were full length. Since I already had recorded the backing tracks for ‘We’ve Only Just Begun’, and had all of the elements saved, I offered to her the opportunity to be the feature in a new recording. This would become her first full-length, full production Carpenters song. I played piano, clarinet, tambourine, and added the male vocal backing tracks while she remotely provided the lead, lead doubles, and all of the other harmony tracks. I then remixed the entire production, reworked the existing videos, and incorporated Tori’s new videos into it. The finished production was posted on CZcams on March 2nd, 2024, which coincided with Karen Carpenter’s birth date.
Since that time, we had accrued several million views and comments between all of the platforms to which it was shared. I am so proud to say I had any part in helping Tori achieve her dreams as a singer. I truly hope she receives all of the accolades of which she is so deserving!

i did i loved karen i first heard her in the womb mum played it to me 50 years ago , she just gets better no matter the stories her voice is never-ending or changing Tori has given us a little bit of Karen back thankyou x

Each year, on Feb. 4, I play nothing BUT Carpenter's music, in honor of Karen. She was a HUGE influence on my singing, and harmonizing. Tori is bringing that all back. Wow.

Tori Holub is an amazingly talented singer. There are other singers on CZcams who I really like, and think sing great, but Tori is on another level. A Pro-level talent who sings better than most professional singers!

Just looking at the smile in your face, I know you were delighted doing these videos and know not just how special her voice is but her dedication to put everything into her craft. This is absolutely magic. Simply smiling ear to ear. As I am 64 yrs old, I like so many others commenting, grew up with these songs. Jim, Thank you so much for your amazing efforts bringing this music back to life. Cant imagine laying down each track of the harmonies, singing take after take with subtle variants that combine in perfect tune. Tori... Wow, just wow. No words.... Just admiration and respect for your amazing voice and poise! Just found you guys this evening. Cant wait to spend more time with you both. OMG. From the second Tori started singing - I was covered with goose pimples!! The hair stood up on my arms! Absolutely PERFECT! She NAILS Karens inflections, range, evocativeness! As close as I've ever heard someone capture Karen Carpenter - an UNTOUCHABLE!!
She has a little bit of a lisp that Karen didn’t have but other than that, perfection! 🎉
She doesn't quite have the richness and timbre of Karen's voice, yet, and she misses some of the little in-betweens but she's very close and very pleasant to listen to. Very nice. Not Karen, but a very nice tribute to her legacy. 🙂

You haven't just covered Karen as a singer, but The Carpenters as a vocal group. You've mastered the secret to overdubbed choral vocals. Blending with an incomplete "ensemble" that can't respond to each other in real time is damn hard, folks. No amount of Vocalign, Autotune, and digital sorcery can generate the secret sauce. Nice.

This is eerie. Saw the carpenters live in Vegas 71 I think when I was 13. She was still behind the drums at the time. This young lady is very close to Karen but I can still hear differences. That being said excellent performance!
I agree. Tori's very good but Karen had more of a warmth to her voice. I saw the Carpenters on that tour too. Great memories.

Thank you! I want you to notice something it took me many viewings of the original to go OMG! I’ve seen The Ed Sullivan Show original countless times. First Karen’s outfit to Tori’s outfit. Then in the song Walk On By. It’s a duet. In Tori’s original she’s Richard in the backing and here in the main. Right to the camera, Richard/harmony/Karen and repeat. When I figured it out 🤯

I listen to alot iof music, its my safe place , im terminally sick from a punch , its given me extreme depression and anxiety severe night terrors and extreme ptsd with suicidal tendencies, when i clise ny eyes especially when Tori sang weve only just begun , i was litterly in 17th October 1970 watching the ed sullivan show and karen was playing drums in her iconic yellow dress singing this. Time travels really does exist

Second, separate comment... i don't think i've ever heard the first song in the medley before. 6 full decades on the Earth, and a huge fan of Burt Bacharach - and i'm hearing it like brand new in 2024 CE! I rather love it. Brilliantly performed, without, it seems, any edit to the main vocal performance. Brava, & Bravo!
Tori's voice is blessed with a range of octaves that will put her up there with the finest vocalists in the 2024-2044 timeframe.I appreciate her for her talent and for her ability to get "inside" the soul of Karen Carpenter,I think that has helped her recreate that distant sadness and despair Karen felt deep down in the inner layers of her psyche when she performed,especially in the last years of her life.

Wow, Tori has all the natural ease and musicality of Karen Carpenter. They are both rare contraltos. Tori's voice is just a tad fuller, which is, if anything, a good quality. Those of us who are old enough to remember real music thirst for more.
I would like to hear Tori sing something original that is composed for her voice.
Tori you're brilliant. To me, Karen was and is the best female singer of all time. It's wonderful to hear her again through you.
She is amazing! I would not have believed this if I hadn't seen it. Her voice has almost the same timbre as Karen's.
It's my birthday (68) and this voice is the gift of the day. I had closed the door on Carpenters, always coming back now and then (ha!)but never to be blessed with a new set of songs. There are so many songs KC would have claimed as her own, I hesitate to think what she would have done with Benny and Bjørn's catalogue.
There was one song that blew my mind sung by Josefin Nilsson "High hopes and heartaches", the girls in ABBA should have covered it IMO because the song truly deserved a bigger audience.
It might be out of your comfort zone Tori and you might not enjoy it but at least give a minute or two of your time...please. It's a bit of a pounder to be honest but the chorus is to die for. Your brain will be infected with the chorus after one play.

A girl Tori's age doing these songs once again proves what I've been saying for years; Good is Good and will always be Good. For as long as humans exist they'll always go back to this ear (60's-70's) to cover and recreate the best music. They will not be covering any songs post (maybe the 80's). We have run out of great, there's nothing left-it's all been done. Speaking of "Great," Bravo/Brava Jim & Tori.

He signed both the Carpenters and Burt Bacharach as well as another personal favorite Sergio Mendes and Brasill 66 back in the day.

I’ve said it on other Tori videos that I thought I would never hear a voice as pure as Karen’s but I certainly was wrong. This young lady is incredibly talented and her sound is uncanny
