- This Konami Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles Electronic Handheld has had a prior repair attempt. It doesn't have any power or signs of life.
Let's see if we can fix it!
Hope you enjoy!
Steve

Stupid Teenage Mutant not Ninja but Hero Turtles 2 thing.
how did u pin this 3 days ago
@@markusafri2343 you can set a schedule for your upload. Like he can upload the video at Wednesday and it will be released to the public at Saturday if he want that.
@@Macaaroni23 nice.
So TMNT was completely rebranded in UK, with different box art, marketing, title screens, video games, merch, (and omg the opening song too!?) just because "ninja has a violent connotation"? that's bonkers! Stupid censorship board.
so you're pressing on the back and its making a connection -my thought its that behind the resin on thr blobchip, its pulled up some traces, perhaps this stuff shrinks very slowly with age, as it dries out or someithng?
Great effort Steve. I'm glad my shoddy repair attempt wasn't the worst thing that was wrong with it. Thanks for the shout out - Nancy and Agatha were delighted! 👍
Thanks for the donation, it gave us all something to appreciate Steve's skills
The fun starts at 0:00
😂
This could be as simple as bad contacts on the screen, I wouldn't think the blob could be corroded as it's protected (sort of) from anything hitting the chip underneath. Great video as always Steve
Deffo dodgy gpu
That hand drawing is fantastic
I'm an old man with lots of experience with broken things. I think that's broken as well!
An expert has spoken! (LOL).
I've had this issue before, they're designed so cheaply it can come down to actual pressure, even pressure as your finger kept doing. The LCD tends to have a strip of contacts held firmly down with a harder foam strip with an array of contacts along it, you'll have seen this with like a Game & Watch among others. Some version of this may be at play here, so some even firm pressure put down to where it's sending the signal to the LCD to display could likely clear this up. If it were the glop top, that shouldn't matter by pressure, it's dead or not, not varying degrees of sketchiness.
A StezStix Fix on a saturday, "Nice".
Stupid saturday :D
The format, method, and pacing of your content is perfect. Please don't change a thing.
Maybe let him change his underwear tho.
@@franksmith7271 Fair.
You checked all the positives but not the negatives by touching the Cristal you are shorting to ground so that could be the problem
Based on the way you are pushing on it. It may be blob chip delamination. Or it could be the display. If it uses zebra strips, they could be bad, or the connections to the LCD.
Do you think it is fixable?
yeah the pressure is definitely showing some issue either there or the chip. a bit of packing foam may save the day if he uses it to press the board all the time.
Clean PCB to check for any conductive residue which may cause issues.... Also clean under the rubber buttons...
That's a fantastic likeness of you. Really well done!
This dude makes me smile always when i watch his videos.😂
😮👍 amazing to hear Zig and Zag getting a mention, spent many an hour watching their show 😁
Well, you went all out to fix this for the children. Hats off for that. That was a thorough attempt. Cheers Steve!!!
Saturdays are so much better with a StezStix Fix video!!
hand drawn Colonel Sanders, great.
I just found your channel, and boy am i glad i did! thx for the video Steve!
Love the funky music a third of the way in as you were applying new solder and cleaning it.
Niiiice!
My husband is an electronics technologist, and he reckons that when that cracked cap initially failed (he says it fell apart too easily for it to have been you that caused it), it created a surge that damaged the blob chip. Sad that you couldn’t fix it, but super fun to watch anyway! 😊
3v took out a blob chip that can take up to 5v? Theres no buck converters or anything that can surge as such.. problem is them blob chips are so cheaply made it probably just failed.. and seems to read the crystal completely wrong.. when he touches it the (earth?) noise is adjusting its clock speed.. it does seem to speed right up when earthed.. just my guess
tell your huisband its time to sleep

@@vladimirpopoviclipovac9689 no one beeing rude
Your husband knows absolutely nothing about electronics.
Great video.. and what an amazing job you did with that jump wire. Top class 👏
Heya Steve. I think you have the answer with the “finger on crystal” thing. I’d bet on the clock oscillator not working. Remember that the crystal is NOT the clock oscillator. It’s just part of it. I’d try removing the crystal and injecting a clock signal from something else to test the idea. Your options are an external signal generator, or a bodge wire (plus ground) from a donor game, or for a permanent fix a small single-component clock oscillator module. Just connect the signal to one of the crystal pads - one is output from the oscillator driver, and the other is clock input to the micro. You have a 50% chance of getting it right first time!

Always, ALWAYS nice to see you and your awesome videos, Steve :)
LOL love your content. Thanks for filming and sharing. I sometimes skip your raps or karaoke segments, but the soundtrack tune from Ghostbusters 2... You actually did a great job with that! I comment about this because obviously the flawless electronics troubleshooting work in the rest of the video was great as usual.
6:14 "...look, they've even got my ugly neck warts..."
It's called a head, Steve.
So glad you did T.U.R.T.L.E Power at the credits there!
I still have the original movie soundtrack cassette tape from when I was a kid, it's my most prized possession
That’s a nice self portrait sir
Is it just me or has the wiring skills improved significantly? Also much better amount of solder mask than in the past lol
Yes, totally, but not as much as his rapping skills.
@@sthiy Perfect amount..

That's nuts that you are almost to 100K. Love this channel.
Great Video Steve! Pity it wasn't a successful repair, but still a great effort! I had the same on my Dyson fan video, where the main microcontroller had been blown due to the motor controller feeding power back into it when it blew. Unfortunately it seems we can't fix everything...
Just when I thought the videos couldn't get any better, you;ve only gone an rapped T.U.R.T.L.E Power!
Nice traces reconstruction job. 👍
Great video either way it goes down. Cheers Steve. 👍
Love your works
I love seeing thing I haven’t in a long time, I know I had that exact game. I can remember the feel of it in my hands and the buttons.
Oh my god, I forgot that I had that toy until I saw your thumbnail. That's awesome. Thanks for the memory. Love the channel.
Love it when Steve gets the funk out!
you sir are a genius, forget the wiring etc. The Funky Music and Raps with Video just works. Amazing 👍✌
Can you clean the screen contacts? Especially if it's the zebra strip type. You were pushing on the crystal that looked to be right behind the screen
Second that!
What about the audio also not working?
@@Vibropollo speaker wasnt connected
Good shout Brandon, I did clean the board contacts but not the zebra strip. I still don't think it'll work as I did connect the speaker up (off camera) and no sound was coming out of it either. Worth a shot though, as I don't know if the speaker works or not! 👍
This!
hell yeah i had one them bad boys as a child. great video pal. many thanks
I loved this game as a kid so many great memories.
Wow Steve. Great fix. My favorite part was where you didn't try to sling your own merch for half the video.
Omg I had this as a child I loved it made my Christmas
That drawing was amazing!!!
lol oh damn, neck warts and everything, good stuff, I admire your attention to such detail when fixing stuff
Thank you very much for all the entertainment Steve. Karoline x
Love your videos, Steve 👍👍
I had that as a child. So great to see a toy from my past.
The soundtrack was particularly good this episode.
Keep doing what your doing Steve, I love watching your vids, you are a great guy funny.
Another amazing vid, thanks for sharing your skills and fun 😉😎
Quick question, what type of flux / grease are you using with the seringe when you solder?
The music in this one really reminded me of Space Channel 5 on dreamcast! Great vid as always, if something doesn't rhyme with orange, you bloody well make it rhyme!
😂 loads of rhymes for orange!
That was the joke in the song, because a lot of people say nothing rhyme with "orange", when in fact, it's possible to find rhymes that go with it ; )
czcams.com/video/lPcR5RVXHMg/video.html (if you don't like the music, go at the small interview part at the end of the video to see that "orange" has rhymes that work ; ) ).
@@StezStixFix Defeated. I'm running out of dumb/stupid names too. I'm of course not just a patreon to get the stupid names in, and I hope you've got a chuckle out of it too. Drew Peacock was probably my favourite.
I really appreciate your videos, and it's inspired me to crack out the soldering station again, and fix some stuff.
No more dumb/stupid names for a while, I'm off on holiday, so those are going on holiday too :)
Great not only am I deaf from the singing ...... now I'm blind from the drawing.......,kidding I guess do love your videos even though you leave us hanging in agonizing suspense
Lmao, glad you got the drawing 😂 great vid btw 🥳
I had that unit as a kid. Loved that thing but I eventually took it apart and then accidentally broke it.
Oh damn, someone on the schoolbus definitely had that, brings up some serious nostalgia
I fix same model yesterday with same problem, finally is the cristal oscillator. New one and working again
If the watch crystal is in a Pierce oscillator circuit then it will need the two load capacitors to both be in working order. Check to see if any of the other ceramic capacitors have a leg connected to the crystal and replace them with the same values. The fact that something happens when your finger is touching the crystal is a clue - you are acting as a big, hairy capacitor, Steve!
Boy's got bars.
Oh wow I had that game when it came out, I was big into TMNT at that time, I remember it but had forgot until just seeing it here.
DUUUUDEEEEE!!!!! its those rubber contacts that make the screen work!!!!
i love the music during the fix
7:42 Moultim-itter - straight out of Mr. Heck's toolbox of alternative pronunciations.
Wow I totally forgot about that kind of games. i got that one when I was a kid.
The fact that it "runs" if you bodge the crystal.. makes me think the cristal driver may be at fault.. but thats just a random guess.. might just be the blob
That's probably inducing voltage that is causing the LCD to turn on. Which makes me think something is floating. A broken trace. Perhaps somewhere around the crystal.
@@Bubu567 could be, could be.. would be funny if the rubber connector between lcd and board is the wrong way or damaged, although, that wouldn't nessesarly do any of that.
Yes, gives the impression that the crystal is not running, not sure whether those caps and resistor are in the crystal drive circuit (scope required to determine whether oscillating). Also, worth checking zebra strips and those buttons which seemed to be intermittent (dodgy pads or traces)
Nice tune whilst reflow
Is that a short at 4:12. I really look forward to you video's every week, they keep getting better.
I had the "Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles" version back in the day - I never realised there were other ones! I'll have to see if I can find mine and then track down a copy of II, plus any others, to complete my collection.
I never had one but I always wanted one... I'm sure you could get double dragon version aswell
10:18 I don't think... Classic.... I have said that many times. Enjoyed the video. thanks for sharing
for sure its the contacts from the board to the screen
that hand drawing is spectacular
I had one of these when I was younger! I’m sure I had another one with another game too.. maybe Top Gun?
Man, to be this knowledgeable and try so many things to fix it and still not get it going in the end....I think we can safely call this thing broken haha
The funkiest of funk soldering music. 👍
Damn man, when we can expect your first album? That rapping of yours is getting better and better and I really enjoy it. TBH I hated it at first but now I like it.
Anyway, great videos and I really enjoy watching your channel.
You might want to try a couple of things.
Given the screen lights up when you are pushing in the board it could be an issue with the screen connection to the board.
Also you might want to give a close inspection on both sides of the edge of the board Given the condition of that trace you could have other Trace damage on the board and some boards have traces on both sides of it.
But that's just a thought also you might want to order the correct replacement part for the damaged one you replaced.
I've got an item I ordered off of wish and it uses triple A batteries but I have to use certain ones other wise it doesn't work.
I had this game , was sick with it in 5 minutes 👍🏻🍻🇨🇦
Just need to ask about the mugshot you got - it wasn't sourced from the police, was it?
😂 very possibly
Seriously good drawing there...
The soldering montage was great! I think you will become the "Guy Ritchie of repair videos"!
;-)
I've seen similar before. Try a new or another zebra connector. It's the rubber strip from the PCB to the LCD. Light grey outers with a black(ish) core. The conductivity drops if they get over compressed, old or dry.
Had to go and check my Garfield game. Same shape and shape but orange and features a large tabby cat. Still working despite its great age, lol.
Hey Steve. Just watched Mat Armstrong's new video where he's rebuilding a Lamborghini. His dashboard has some issues and it's basically one giant circuit board, it's looks pretty complicated but could be a great collaboration idea? Anyway, just a thought. Love your videos! Cheers.
I had this about 30yr ago I loved that thing
As someone who owned one of these back in the day here's my suggestion: Throw it in the bin!
OMG! I Had one of those. oh the memories
The sudden stop of the music when the cap broke literally broke me.
Must be something to do with the contacts on the screen as you get something when there's pressure on the crystal
Your style is unorthodox. -But un-effective this time never mind Stezza.
Hi Steve you have the same policy as my dad, take apart a working gaget to fix a broken 1 lol
I had one of those when I was a kid and it only just came back to me when I saw it on this video.
If it was mostly dead there might be hope, but with all dead the only thing you can do is go through it’s pockets and look for loose change.
I have the American version of this and it still works!
Don't make the guy feel even worse!😆
Could be the Zebra strip that connects the LCD to the PCB I've had that before, gets dirty or looses its conductivity on parts of the strip try a light rub with some IPA and re-install......oh make sure the pads on the PCB are squeaky clean too, even a small layer of flux can stop proper conductivity, also could be the caps across the crystal, there's usually two you replaced a 150pF is there another of the same value? - Good luck.
I had this thing lol amazing
The great thing about devices like these are that even when they stop working they are still as enjoyable as they were when they were working.
Best part is the patrons rap.
When seing this i remeber i got this game when younger i realy hope that i got it somewhere in the hous and it works.
what is that funky tune you started playing while cleaning and soldering? I love it! Sad that you couldn't fix this one. Hope you figure it out for a revisit!
