      You people are stupid. It debuted at #15 and then sank. It was supposed to be her big comeback and it had massive promotion.
      It's 2019. Promotion does NOT mean going on television and performing, because that doesn't work anymore. Promotion in 2019 is about Spotify and Apple Music playlisting, which Katy paid big bucks for.

      Witness had great storytelling and messages. “Power” and “Hey Hey Hey” are women empowerment songs. “Witness” is about loneliness and looking for someone who understands you. “Into Me You See” is about finding that person. “Deja Vu”, “Dance With the Devil”, and “Mind Maze” are about depression, anxiety, and hopelessness. “Chained to the Rhythm” is about how we don’t see the problems in society. “Swish Swish” is about standing up against bullies. You literally made a video about what I was thinking about Katy Perry’s career. She just needs good promotion and a little bit of hype behind her. Katy Perry has always been someone whose music people have generally liked, hence why almost all of her songs are climbers on the Hot 100. Her influence has never been what ignited her chart success, like Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande who each have a bunch of top 10 debuts. She just needs to get the word out and the quality of the music will take it from there. If she had performed NRO a few times on TV the week after she released, I could’ve easily seen it climb into the top 10, because people actually like it. It’s actually astounding that it was able to stay in the top 40 for so long with no promo, especially considering songs like “Lights Up” which debuted on the Hot 100 at roughly the same position but left after just two weeks because there was no promo. This only confirms the fact that people like her and are willing to get into her music again, she just needs to be a little more adamant, and hopefully, that’s what we see in the future.

    • @popdissected4400
      @popdissected4400  Před 4 lety +5

      Yes, absolutely! Couldn't agree more.

    • @treeagio7662
      @treeagio7662 Před 4 lety +3

      Wrong. Television promotion doesn't do anything for songs anymore. It's 2019 and people don't watch TV as much as they used to. The promotion that works is Spotify, Apple Music, and CZcams promotion. Katy has done ALL of these with every song she's released this year. She's been playlisted by all of the major streaming services and CZcams ads have ran for all of her songs. None of that worked because people don't care anymore.
      "This only confirms the fact that people like her and are willing to get into her music again, she just needs to be a little more adamant, and hopefully, that’s what we see in the future.
      "
      Lol no. If this were the case, the song wouldn't need heavy promo. Songs that need heavy promo to perform well are songs that people are being forced to like. Nowadays, a song's success has to be organic. A song going viral on TikTok turns into a #1 single. You can't force that.
      NRO only stayed in the top for as long as it did because they were paying tons of money to keep it on the radio. No one was streaming it or buying it. It was literally only being pushed on radio.

    • @armantitube790a2
      @armantitube790a2 Před 4 lety +9

      Anthony Ashcraft If people didn’t care anymore, NRO over wouldn’t have debuted at #15 in the first place. It was either her highest or second highest debut on Spotify (can’t remember). You can’t pay millions of people to stream her song. Also, there was of course SOME promo, but none of it was sufficient. As a big Katy fan, I’m always looking at all things related to her, so if I barely saw any promo, I know no one else did. Having these little Amazon Music billboards and what not that appear 3 times a day in a specific location is not effective and only like two of her songs had even that this year. TV performances turn into CZcams videos where people can actually hear the song, it’s up forever, and it can be recommended. I don’t watch any talk shows regularly, yet have seen so many performances from people who I wasn’t looking for, like Kesha, Halsey, Camila Cabello, and this has impacted their songs. Kesha’s song rose on iTunes after the AMAs and Halsey’s song has moved up like ten spots on Billboard after multiple TV performances, so yes, TV does work. And being on a playlist for a few days on Spotify doesn’t provide any renewed or new interest for listeners. Even if people like the song, which PLENTY of fans, critics, and the general public did based on what I’ve seen, if you’re not being consistently directed toward it, you’ll forget about it.
      Tik Tok is indeed a place where songs go to become hits, but it will never be the place for Katy Perry no matter how much people like her songs, because Tik Tok is all about music with heavy beats and 808s, so she automatically can’t join in that market, so there was virtually no way for any attention to stay on her music. You need attention no matter where it comes from to have a successful song. And no matter how much promo, if people don’t like the song all that much, no one is forced to stream it or buy it.
      I almost never heard NRO on the radio, and I live in Chicago, which is where it got most of its popularity. That should tell you something. For about a month or so, NRO stayed toward the top on Spotify, but once there was no consistent promotion, people just forgot about it because it wasn’t being fed to them in any facet like a new song needs to be to attain popularity.

    • @popdissected4400
      @popdissected4400  Před 4 lety +32

      I have no idea, I'll be honest. I mean, I'd assume at the end of the day, it's competition from other artists. Cardi B released a song the same day as "Never Really Over", and while it peaked 1 spot below "NRO", I think it got more traction because Cardi has had so much hype recently, and Katy was struggling to get back in the spotlight. "NRO" really could have been THE song to catapult her to #1 on the charts and in the mainstream, but I think there was a lot of unintended competition (in terms of radio and sales).

      it was on the radio a lot in my country, but still only peaked at #47. the video trended high and she was #1 on iTunes for a couple of days. people just don’t care for her, she needs to do something BIG before it’s too late and seems - for the lack of better words - desperate/pathetic. I liked NRO and HiH a lot, but they weren’t “Teenage Dream”/“Prism” or the opposite enough for mainstream audiences to care about.

    The problem with 365, small talk and harleys is hawaii was definitely not that "everyone already knew about them" lol. The awareness of these tracks amongst the general public is non existent, its just hardcore pop fans and kity kats that are following her right now. Katy's just lost her mainstream appeal since 2017 and a significant amount of time will have to pass before she can be widely popular again. also 365 was incredibly underwhelming as was small talk, they are big reasons why she's flopping for real

    • @popdissected4400
      @popdissected4400  Před 4 lety +6

      While I do understand what you're saying, it wasn't just "hardcore fans" who knew about the tracks. The existence of 365, as well as her other singles had publications written on them. While it may have not been national headlining news, it wasn't some secret that only KatyCats or pop music fans were aware of. I think it's also a bit faulted to say a song being "underwhelming" immediately correlates to it not performing well. 365's leaks heavily hurt the song, and that's just a fact. While some may view the track as "underwhelming", that is not the predominant reason it didn't reach higher on the charts. Small Talk however, I do agree, wasn't Katy's best effort. But the severe negligence in promotion also caused it to not perform well. It's important to also note, these songs are getting little promotion against huge releases that are promoted constantly. It's not solely about one's own opinion affecting the song's chart placement. Harleys in Hawaii wasn't even sent to radio stations in the United States. Thus, it had NO chance to perform at all.

    • @LC-iz9xm
      @LC-iz9xm Před 4 lety +3

      @@popdissected4400 yeah i remember seeing publications about katy singing small talk in a toilet somewhere, but that still doesn't mean anyone knows that song, cause hardly anyone does. Also i really don't think the 365 leak is that significant, if a song gains popularity through streaming its initial release date often isn't important. i dont think 365 was intended to be katy's big comeback single anyway, i think it was meant to slowly re-introduce her/remind the general public she existed, its honestly just not got an exciting chorus or particularly strong vocals. I think that Never really over was supposed to be her potential comeback, its a much better song that has her classic singing style and a big chorus, unfortunately that didn't work out either in a huge way. I just think pop music isn't even really mainstream nowadays, but katy will get her time again, you can clearly hear the influence she's had on singers like kim petras, right now shes just not doing it tho, and deffo not in 2020

    • @popdissected4400
      @popdissected4400  Před 4 lety +3

      @@LC-iz9xm I did include the video of Katy performing Small Talk in the bathroom, a series she's started called "Potty Jams". But that in itself was not what I was referring to. The existence of the song was leaked in May this year, shortly after Never Really Over's release. I'm not saying "everyone" knows of the song or knew of it, but the fact it wasn't a surprising release hurt the song. Because Katy - unfortunately - has to reestablish herself to some degree, I think her releases are dependent on the element of surprise. Or else, it becomes "Oh, another Katy Perry song coming out soon? Okay." No one would care. And you do have a fair point about 365.
      Now that you mention it, I do see it as more of a way of putting her back into the mainstream as opposed to a big comeback. But in truth, a song leaking in FULL, 2 weeks before it's supposed to release hurts the impact it could have - regardless if its good or not. I do agree though, pop music has slowly shifted to the back burner of the industry. The 2010s was really the decade of pop music, and the mainstream has shifted away from that. And yes, Katy has influence on many artists, such as Kim Petras, Dua Lipa and so on. While I would love to see 2020 be the year Katy reclaims her spotlight, I can understand why that may be "too soon". But as I said in the video, the music industry is an industry. You can't just wait for the perfect time. You have to go for it! Katy needs aggressive promotion, live performances and schedules releases that aren't leaked everywhere.

It takes the fun out of teasers and trailers for new music. But that's just how the internet is. 365, Small Talk and HIH; though I personally love them; weren't necessarily supposed to be huge hits and it was very clear from the lackluster promotion they received from Katy. As she stated earlier this year, she is currently experimenting with different sounds testing what the general public's taste is like nowadays, but most importantly, to see what the public wants from her musically. I do believe however, that NRO is a lost cause for it was received with mainly positive reviews from critics and the public. But although she did give relatively more attention to the song as apposed to her other releases, the lack of televised live performances and proper promotion caused the song to quickly lose its popularity. I personally believe that in order for her to reestablish her powerful Queen of Pop status moving forward, she needs to announce an album because I believe that's what the public really wants from her now. NRO performed decently in the charts because it was believed to be the lead of an upcoming project, and when it was later announced that that wasn't necessarily the case, people lost their interest in Katy all over again. I really hope Katy reclaims her throne bcz the music industry really needs her.

    • @popdissected4400
      @popdissected4400  Před 4 lety

      Ooh, very true point! Katy stating she doesn't have an album currently decreases people's interest in her. I think in a way, it results in a "what's the point?" attitude when she's releasing music since it isn't tied to an album. I don't know how engaging this would be - but I'd love to see Katy pull a Taylor Swift type move by teasing an album in a way that's obvious, but still raises questions. Taylor's "easter eggs" were such a great way to keep so many people engaged in her stuff. I'd love if Katy took that approach honesty. But you're right, if she keeps up with the whole "there's no album", then people will just stop caring, and I unfortunately think we're seeing that right now. Never really Over honestly could have been HUGE, but once we realized it wasn't a lead single, interest died down and Katy just moved on to Small Talk, then Harleys in Hawaii. And you're right, they're more or less "droplets". She's putting them out and testing the waters. I mean, Katy has OWNED that throne, and arguably did from 2010 - 2015. There's a lot of ways she can reclaim that throne, but at the rate she's doing things, it won't happen.

  • @elrayocustodio6565
    @elrayocustodio6565 Před 4 lety +2

    Many years ago I told a friend that this was going to happen to Katy in the future, since she was taking such a long break from creating new music during her prism tour era, while pop industry was rapidly shifting and leaving her behind. They told me I was crazy haha... It's a matter of promotion problems, yes. If she doesn't belive in her character and if she doesn't allow herself to be vulnerable and conect with people, no one will believe in her craft, no matter how good her new music might be. I know she has tried this before, during the Witness era but still, everything looked like a mimic, a bizarre caricature of herself. Ariana Grande is successful not only because of her voice, but mostly because people are drawn to know more about her character and story. It's that mistery factor, the one Katy is neglecting. Michael Jackson used to say that you can't be successful in music industry, unless you have an element of mistery attached to you persona, it might be intentional or not but every artist needs that momentum. Katy needs to find it or fabricate it, if she trully wants to come back, because she obviously doesn't have anything interesting to say right now. Also I don't think she needs to come back and I don't think she needs to prove herself to anyone. Her music career is amazing and really complex, she's done more than enough.

    “Small Talk” wasn’t a smart single choice. People didn’t like it. Same with “365.” People liked “Never Really Over” and while it wasn’t given any major live performances, it did get pushed at radio. It was more of a pure pop sound which isn’t really in right now but it still did moderately well. HIH should be doing better but I don’t think Capitol is really putting any muscle behind it at Top 40 radio and after “Small Talk” was a dud, I don’t think radio much cares about giving it a real shot.

      Christina is definitely on my video wishlist of "Why [certain album] 'flopped'" :)

      Liberation had no momentum behind it, a huge hiatus and two flop albums previously. The album being of great quality alone, with an incredible tour, is a win for me.

    I hope Katy Perry make a dark era, and make a lead smash hit single like Dark Horse..
