That's basically THE job description of a Bush pilot lol. In the Bush, there is no services. Your plane breaks? You're fixing it or you're gonna be stuck awhile. Plus, you have an ENTIRE village/community relying on you for day to day survival. You might be a tour guide one day, mail man the next. Air ambulance on another day, village mechanic the next. Where I live, in SE Alaska, most pilots are ALSO mechanics. Many of us have our A&P. Sometimes we fix the village power plant, others help someone with fixing a broken down boat. In the Bush, knowledge and skills are what matters. Everyone uses what skills they have and knowledge to help eachother out. A village doctor might do emergency surgery on someone, having the skills to do so, yet are clueless on why their boat won't start. Most Bush pilots are pretty smart, well-rounded, and on top of that, the lifeline of the community.
For instance, I live during the summer in a tiny fishing village in AK. The ONLY way in our out is by boat or float plane. The weather is bad here, so planes can't come in quite often. The nearest town is 90 miles by sea from me. About 4 hour boat trip in a speed boat, 8 to 10 in a bigger vessel. Well one day I woke up with a horrible tooth infection, and got very sick. The weather was bad, so a plane couldn't land. I needed immediate medical attention. So a fishing charter captain took me by boat 20 miles away in a storm, to meet a float plane in the middle of the ocean in the only place he could land. I barely met the plane in time. I made it to town, but if I was only 30 MINUTES LATE I would have been stuck for 4 or 5 days and probably would have died, before the weather cleared up.

It costs £175 for a flight lesson here in uk. Ryan gives his CZcams info for free. Flying a GA aircraft is relatively easy but being a good, safe, diligent pilot day-in, day-out takes real skills and discipline. Being employed as a bush pilot for an organisation and not just doing it for your own fun is a huge responsibility. I have lots of respect and love this channel. PNG seems like a dream place to fly. I totally recommend his paid Kodiak/g1000 tutorials though for anyone interested

I fly in the Rocky Mountains in Canada. Mountain terrain is definitely tricky as you get those micro climates and sudden weather changes around the place! I went for a flight and it was a calm departure but on route it turned bad really quick with mountain waves and a dropping ceiling. Definitely tests you on your decision making about whether to proceed or turn around. I ended up turning around to escape a worsening down the valley bringing with a strong crosswind and wind shear. I just made it back as it started to become worse and didn’t have too many problems but it didn’t take long for the wind sock to be full horizontal deflection.

That was very impressive and entertaining to watch. Thank you for uploading! I realise that the decision on top or below doesn't seem to be too easy even for experienced pilots. I remember to have once been on top for 2 hours and hoped for a hole at the end of that leg. My alternative would have been to divert relatively far towards the sea and then return between ceiling and coast. It felt quite relieving when it opened in front of the runway.

Yes Ryan Farran, the safety of flying in a particular area is super super important. It's really really important especially with the little helicopters Ethnos360 is flying in Papua New Guinea, as they are very susceptible to being blown out of the sky in high winds or turbulent air flows. Here in New Zealand our crash rate with all the models of the Robinson helicopters is much higher than in the US where you come from. Our aviation authorities are having trouble working out why we have this higher crash rate and they don't seem to be able to get a handle on it. They have a special watch list for looking into the safety record of the operation of Robinson helicopters in New Zealand.

31:18 Are those yurts? I don't think I've ever seen one before. Neat. Nice closing music.

Great videos, what is the device on your dashboard called, what is it used for, what cameras do you use for recording in flight and what is the name of the weather app you use? (aspiring pilot here) thanks for responding.

Ryan, I've noticed you are pretty good at getting your left wheel directly on that "1" sign on the apron at Goroka!
Quick Question: is Pinji (mentioned by ATC as Stuart's destination) a helicopter-only location?

I got the 2024 ethnos calendar a few days ago and I was disappointed they didn’t have you somewhere in it, but maybe next year… saw some of your coworkers in it tho.
