- I was always taught you start with a general test to determine if that system is okay.
Using a Relative Compression Test (RC Test) one can see right off the bat if the promblem is mechanical. If the RC test passes then you know it has to be either Fuel or ignition related. No coil swapping, no injector swapping with this test.
Charge up your scope, replace the 9v on your amp clamp and follow along as I show you with the Pico 4425, Autel MP408, Micsig ATO 1104, Autel Ultra, How to Set it up and how to run the easy RC Test.

This video is meant to be educational. I cover multiple scopes like the title says, if you are looking for a quick fix, or want me to tell you swap these parts and you are done, find another channel, that won’t happen here. I teach how to do things right, NOT how to guess. This is a 20+ minute video that means it’s not a quick fix video, so don’t expect it to be quick.
I have the micsig scope. When i do relative compression test i dont get a square wave when connected to the control wire of the coil on a 2003 honda civic. I get an erratic signal. The square wave appears when the engine is idling. I had similar result on a 2010 Lexus. Any idea what i might be doing wrong?
@@joelopez40oz23 How do you stop the engine from starting? Do you manipulate anything related to spark? On the Lexus make sure you're scoping the IGT signal and not the IGF.
@@juergenscholl2843 On the Lexus i removed the Fuel pump relay and used the igt signal. On the Honda i removed the fuel pump fuse. Does the time per division matter? I use 1 second per div and 100 mili sec per div with same results.
I want you to do more on autel m408
Thanks this was helpful
Well in Africa we don't have fancy equipment like you. But we still fix bmw, audi etc. But I really think you a very good lecture. You people in the USA are very blessed with training and information. Thank for your videos
Doing diagnostics for a long time, here is the best piece of advice learned about 20 yrs back. Always perform an audible relative compression prior to anything. Doesn't matter if its a misfire, feeling of imbalance, or even a tune up. My scope is always on a light rolling cart with the scanner ready to go. If I hear an imbalance, I already know my next path. Saves a ton of time and money from inspecting and checking components that are not the root cause.
Excellent demonstration, very clear, well done sir! Thank you.
Thank you for watching!
Very clear explanation 👌
Super helpful ! Extraordinary detail !! I learned a few new things !!!! Thanks !!!!!
Awesome explanation thank you.
Great video, Imma start using a scope soon
I love your help I am trying to learn the scope, thank you
I'm really glad I seen this video before doing an RC test on my vehicle. Do you have any other videos that you used the MP408 scope?
Nicely done sir!
Thanks Cody!
@@MasterAutomotiveTraining Do you recommend the Micsig as an entry level scope? I have the Uscope and am considering purchasing the Micsig to expand my Scope knowledge.
@@joelopez40oz23 I do, its a great tablet based scope, very powerful with lots of the bells and whistles similar to like pico.
Very helpful thank you!
You're welcome!
Thank you for posting some ultra content. There’s not that much out at the moment. Great stuff man👍
Thank you for your support! If you'd like some specific Ultra stuff let me know.
@@MasterAutomotiveTraining awesome!!! Would def like to see some more of the scope
@@MasterAutomotiveTraining how about a pressure transducer? Can you use one with the ultra? Thanks!!
Appreciate the video. As you said. No excuses 😜
Yes sir, no excuses why we can’t use this simple method daily on every car.
Thanks again bro for the various methods. Really appreciate it 🤣
No problem! Glad it helped, some people just want me to say swap this coil, change plugs and cross your fingers.
@@MasterAutomotiveTraining then thats not diagnostic testing. That's parts cannon finest.lol. yo bro. Keep up the good work. We all appreciate all the effort you guys put out there even the ones who act like they don't
master in the maxiscop it is necessary to use attenuators to see the primary circuit signals and injector signal I have doubts about this thanks in advance
i have m408 having little issue setting up custom probe for rotkee PS16 Pressure transducer on custom probe setting
Hi great and informative video, where can I get the new autel MP408 software with the degree rulers.

45 years experience and I can diagnose and understand any scope screen just can't figure out how to set the scope to read. Much like a musician who can play an instrument but can't read a note of music. I think I will stick with what I know and throw my scope away.
Great training.. I have never setup the 720 degree markers.. I am guessing that we could see timing slip if our cylinders dont line up with the proper and expected degree lines?? correct? anyone?
Great instruction. I just got my AutepMP408 yesterday and I’ve been playing around with it. One question I have is when do you use the attenuators?
Congrats on the new MP408, you'll love it! I contacted Autel asking for math channels hopefully they listen soon! Attenuators are used when connecting to fuel injector, ignition coil or anything that can produce a high voltage spike. For example a fuel injector when the current collapses can spike above 50v, and if your scope is low voltage input can fry the channel. You MP408 comes with a 20:1, means for every 20V in you'll see 1v on your scope screen.
@@MasterAutomotiveTraining
Specs on the MP408 say it has a 200 volt +& - overload protection.
@@MasterAutomotiveTraining did you need to use the attenuator in this test with the MP408?
@@bosshoss14 not on this coil, because it is an intelligent coil 3 or more wires. It only gets a square wave from the pcm to turn on the base of the transistor within the coil. If you have a 2 wire coil you’d need an attenuator.
this is a good vid
Thank you!
Love the videos, I have the scams micsig 4ch scope but I noticed yours has a pic of a car bottom right, mine just has the horizontal and vertical cursors there. Is there a automotive software package that can be purchased for these or downloaded?
I believe you just need to download the updated software, to make it there automotive scope. Only difference is they have automotive presets for common tests. Great scope!
I spoke to Micsig and you’d need to contact them it’s roughly $300 and they’ll upgrade the software for you to automotive.
@@MasterAutomotiveTraining Thanks for this, I will reach out to them will be awesome!! cheers
@@MarkBrown-qh9iu Cheers buddy, anytime we are here to help!
Master Automotive Training muy buen video yo compre el mp408, pero tengo una pregunta lo tenias en el canal A en 500a y luego cambio a 1ka?
Me puede decir los tiempos porfa
Great video! Which scope would you recommend between the two channel picoscope and the MP408?
Thank you! For automotive the MP408, since it has higher input voltage. The 2000 series Pico wasn’t designed for automotive since it doesn’t have more than 20v inputs.
Thanks a lot!
I bought the Autel Ultra, I am an advanced DIY'r and are really liking the integrated scope and signal generator. If you have time can you demo the usefulness of the signal generator feature?
Of course! Give me a few weeks and you’ll see a few videos! Thanks for watching?
@@MasterAutomotiveTraining Ive been wondering about the signal generator on my Autel. I would love to see some videos on that. Did you ever put some together?
How are you liking your Autel Ultra so far? Thanks
@@OP-ik7qb I really like it, fits my needs as an advanced DIY'er. I like to do my own work and this has allowed me to really get into the advanced network Bus systems of todays vehicles. This is a Pro level tool and the challenge for me is to continue to educate myself on its features so that all I get the most out of it. I've been able to program and re-flash modules through the GM service portal with the J2534 integrated pass through box. The integrated scope although not at PICO level is really good.
What are your thoughts on the Autel vs the pico? They look similar
Pico all the way! Or a Micsig if you want the power of a Pico at a fraction of the price. Check out our student store for best pricing www.masterautomotivetraining.com
Thanks for the video oscar. Hey. I have a question. I use the mp408. But how u get. That clean. Signal. My looks. Dirty all the. Times. With too much noise.
And can i use just the lids. That come with the mp408. To do it.
Or low amp clamp. ? Thank you so much.
Hey buddy, thank you for watching! I use Warwick leads, the black Autel leads are not that good quality. I tried them when I first got my MP408, and replaced them almost instantly. Check them out on our student store: masterautomotivetraining.com/collections/lab-scope/products/4-channel-scope-lead-set-9ft
Do you have same thing for repair technician license
my ASE A8 review class works the BAR Repair License.
I appreciate your training videos. I have done some research on scopes that you have mentioned and have come up while searching the internet. I found what looks like an inexpensive starter set up. The model is (Package IV) Hantek 6074BE USB Automotive Diagnostic Oscilloscope 70MHz 4 Channel over 80 types of measurement function. Do you think I could learn to survive on this one? From what I've seen, I believe I could. Any input or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Hello Troy, a Hantek is a good scope, however there interface isn't that great. For the roughly $400 you are going to spend, I'd recommend a Micsig, its a tablet 4 channel scope. I use this scope a lot and has quickly become one of my go to scopes. masterautomotivetraining.com/products/micsig-4-channel-oscilloscope-sato1104?_pos=2&_sid=8c4da9ee7&_ss=r
@@MasterAutomotiveTraining I will look into that. Thank you for your time.
Nicely Done! Very Nicely Done!!!I have the MP408, how did you get the horizontal cursors to read degrees!?@?# I didnt know that was possible. The documentation, all 3 pages of it, just says things like, "This sets the voltage scale, "Use the trigger", no detail other than names for a button. For cursors it just says "Use the cursors to measure" No explanation on how to even get the cursor on the screen, much less how to change it from time to degree, no explanation of the menu that had "rulers" you showed. I was a Hardware Engineer for 40 years in Silicon Valley, used 400,000$ scopes with ease. The MP408 is a nightmare, it works nothing like real scopes or at least very little, near zero documentation, sorry I ever wasted my money on it. Should have just anti-upped for the Pico. Anyway how the cursors came up to degrees Id love to know. Thank you for the demo!!!!
I bet those higher end scientific scopes look awesome! The MP408 for automotive works marvels, obviously it lacks some bells and whistles but for the price point it’s golden. We use the degree cursors for stuff like in-cylinder waveforms, firing events, and I came across them by trial and error. Play with it and I feel you’ll come to like it.
Sir are you using attenuator for this test?
Not on this one, since I am testing an intelligent coil. If it was a 2-wire coil you’d need an attenuator. If you it’s 3 or more wires you won’t need it.
What scope do you recommend for new technicians? I bought an Autel TPMS programmer and I'm pretty happy with the quality and price. Autel is a good brand, but I know you can find cheaper tools to do the same job. I've seen technicians on CZcams using off brand bi directional scanners that have most of the functions you find in Autel scanners, but for less money. Just wondering what scope offers the most bang for the buck.
I love autel scanners, are there others.... of course, does one size fit all? Nope. At a shop they must have a minimum of 2 different brand scan tools, because some work great on certain makes and others don't and sometime its just the car that won't give info.
For scope, my go to is the micsig 1104 masterautomotivetraining.com/products/micsig-4-channel-oscilloscope-ato1104?_pos=1&_sid=f7ad62bb0&_ss=r has the same power as my pico 4425 but in a tablet. For $699 you can beat it, or I'd recommend the MP408 Autel pwoerful scope but its laptop based.
Cool
Thank you sir.
Can i use a pico 600a on a autel maxiscope. And if i can how do i set it up? I get a waveform but its all over the screen.
Sure you can, the Pico amp clamp is a BNC connector and will work with the autel scope. I'd need to know what your settings are on your clamp. Example if the clamp says 10mV/100mA this means that means that 100mV equals 1A/1000mA. Some clamps use 1mV/1A in this case if you see 10mV on the screen you are actually measuring 10Amps.
Let me know your available setting on your Pico amp probe if they above doesn't make sense.
I found out that if i use hantek cc650 and cc65 i dont have to adjust settings to get good waveform. Its actually worth it to use the pico clamps for it gives more clean waveform. Thanx for the input. I played around with it and can get a good waveform.
I had an ATO 1104 for a month and after I connected CH1 to AUX OUT to see what kind of signal it is a clicking sound like a relay comes when switch the voltage range from 200mV to 500mV on any channel. Is this normal or I should worry about?
Most scopes do make a kind of fan coming one, relay long click sound when the scope comes alive. Some are more audible then others. Have you reading a battery with Ch1?
Will you get the same results with a none automotive Pico scope or Hantek 1008A?
Yes you can! Even if you are using the Pico 2000 series non-automotive you can do it, just don't think it has the degree cursors. I have done this with my Hantek all in one and my 1008 series scope as well.
@@MasterAutomotiveTraining Thank you, will try and report.
