  • There are two parts to the culturing process of Kombucha. The first part is the starter tea, which is just kombucha tea that has already been made. The second part is the SCOBY. You might be surprised to learn how you can make kombucha without a scoby. Tune it to learn more.

Thanks for your videos, Donna! They've really helped me in making kombucha and keifir. Just wanted to add my own experience with making starter. I couldn't find plain kombucha in a trustworthy brand, so I just brewed 2 cups of sweet tea and when cool, put it in a 24 oz. Mason jar with 1 cup of G.T. flavored kombucha, covering it with a coffee filter. In about 3 or 4 weeks it had formed a good "scoby", and then it was my starter to make my 1st gallon of kombucha. Have done this 2 or 3 times with great success! After the 1st couple of gallons the original flavoring seems to be brewed out of it. Maybe this will help someone.

I couldn't find the original GT kombucha I had to get the pure it's called and it has a little bit of kiwi juice but that's all I could find I have seen other people make scobies and kombucha with that though

Hey there Donna! Really enjoying binge watching your content again as I've rediscovered fermented foods, and admire your expertise and enthusiasm 😊 I've recently bought a Jun scoby. I'm thoroughly enjoying the journey and my family love this drink. I bought the Jun scoby specifically because I always drink green tea. I was wondering whether it would be harmful to the scoby if i switched to using sugar instead of honey occasionally? Also are the health benefits the same as from the black tea and sugar kombucha? Thanks in advance from London, UK 🇬🇧

I love your videos and podcasts. I just received one of your scoby's for my very first batch of tea. I'm so excited, I just want to watch that scoby in the tea all night. Your video was the first that got me started on this healthy path learning about kombucha. Thank you!🙏🏾🙏🏾🤞🏾🍇🗝️

I live in the south louisiana and can’t find unflavored regular GTS here. I know you’re not suppose to use fruit flavors so what flavor would be best. Thanks for a great video.

    Great podcast! Quick question:
Will the Plain Kombucha from GT's Synergy work with the Beet Kombucha recipe on your website?

yes, as a second ferment. It has been my experience, anecdotally , that beets are surprisingly "explosive";) so you may considering opening your 2nd ferment outside until you have a feel for its amazing CO2 (bubbly) effect. We love ithe beets!

I’d like to ask a question about kefir - what will happen to me if I just wanted to drink 6 times day every day - it’s all that I eat/drink - since finding kefir 4 weeks ago - I can’t stop drinking it.
