- Removing the motor from your E bike isn’t something that you need to do that regularly. When you do decide to open it up for a clean out and few squirts of contact cleaner, it’s important to get it right.

Steve’s going through the specifics of removing the motor from a Specialized Turbo Levo. Something that we think is worth doing to give things a spring clean, especially now the weather is starting to brighten up.

Thank you for all of this info! My local bike shop is clueless when it comes to my e-bike. You guys are great!
Tengo una Turbo Levo FSR. Me ha resultado muy interesante. El mejor reportaje sobre el motor hasta ahora. Sois unos cracks.
Crank bolts 50nm Spider Lockring 50nm Motor mounts 18nm Motor cover 1nm. I would use thread lock on the last two.
Great, thank you! Probably the best “how to” youtube video I’ve ever watched!
I agree with the other comments about the use of a torque wrench. It is a very important tool to use when working on a cycles, ebike or not. Nice video!
Steve
A couple of things. What about torque settings? And when the motor goes in, loosely put in all the motor bolts in first before you tighten up the bolts.
Keep up the good work.
Awesome! Hope you do a vid with the Kenevo as well!
Cool vid keep up the good work
I didn't get as far as you Steve, I snapped the self extracter bolt with a sickening crrack. I was looking to replace the chain guide nut -plate which could not take the amount of Southdowns mud I was processing. Keep up the Great work!
Did you ever get to replace the chain guide nut plate, mines broken as well and having to do all this nonsense just to get at it, is very frustrating. Just wondering if there is a less OTT that doesn't require taking everything apart to get to it.
Great video guys it would be great to see if there have been any changes in this process for the 2019 and we would also love to see how to install a dropper post on the 2019 Levo alloy that appears to require motor removal.
If you have a newer levo there are some differences in the disassembly - they are fairly obvious apart from a hidden bolt which requires the horizontal part of the rear triangle to be removed and pushed out of the way, the hidden bolt is on the drive side near the foam insert
Thanks for a great video! Also, thanks to mikerbwind for the torque specs.
Nice work on the video... love your channel videos! I have a 2019 Levo. Even though I don't need to service it yet, it will be nice to learn about the bike from a video. Do you have a similar video?
What a statement. “ The motor will out live you” If only you knew then what you know now. We’re guinea pigs for this infant industry, I hope our hard earned cash helps them finally get it right. Superb channel by the way.
Well I've done 2000 miles already on my Turbo Levo in 4 months and I'm not even a good rider. I really doubt the motor is going to out live me.
6:20 he said that that belt is gonna outlive me but in last 3 months this is my second belt replacement XD
😂😂😂😂
@@karlwilliamsart and the pictures i got from the bike shop look like smth from a horror movie
Comfort, style and power!
Where does one find the "Brose Topnut" for removing the spider? Can you use a socket instead? What size?
Hi, great video! Does anyone know if doing this kind of maintenance void the warranty? Thank you!
specialized turbo or haibike levo with iq motor .very good info on service thanks Harry SIMMO
Looks like the carbon frame model is slightly different to the alloy frame when it comes to removing the motor? The drive side casing cover looks different too?
Awesome video, please make one for each bike ;-)
What happens if you find corrosion on the contacts of the battery lead?
Will contact cleaner ‘fix’ it? Do I spray both the terminals on the lead AND those in the motor where it locates?
Bike’s been cutting out and dying recently and this may be the cause.
Which tool are you using to remove the castellated nut? Is it a BBT-18 or equivalent? Thanks!
So what do you do when a spindle needs replacing or BB bearing goes? Send it in to be serviced?
What NM recommendations to put the crank arms back on?
Do a Kenevo version, I just bought one and you did a great job explaining how to do it. maybe a BOSCH version too
Will look into it!
Can you supply a link to the correct castle nut removal tool? Cheers.
Love!!!
if you're thinking of buying any levo, you might want to read the forums regarding motor failure.
Nice video, where can I buy the tools to remove the drive side chain ring. Eg the castle nut remover and crank puller
Yes I’d like to find that info out too
park tool BBT-18
Re: levo gen 2 disassembly, in addition to the 4 "visible" bolts on the side of the frame, you need to remove the 6mm hex bolt the attaches the lower rear triangle to the frame, move the triangle aside, to access the two remaining "hidden" bolts that attach the back of the motor to the frame.
Hello, can you tell me the name of the tool that comes out in minute 1 of park tool for the extraction of the plate please?, (It is the LRT-3)?
Where to buy that spider tool to extract chainring from the shaft? Thanks! BTW, nice video!
park tool BBT-18
Hi, in 3:30 you show the cable inside ( battery lead) which is using to connect motor with battery. I have issues with my Levo that it randomly lost assistance and I have suspicion that the cable is broken after using / re-pluging the cable many times... (4 years), So is possible somewhere buy new cable / battery lead to replace broken cable ?
Interesting what you said about LED problems on the battery Steve. Specialized Australia won't fix mine, even though its under warranty. Claim its 'cosmetic". I have one LED not working, one yellow and one red.
pendo that’s very surprising that is the battery indicator. Keep trying I’m sure you will find someone that gives a crap about the specialized name sooner or later. They replaced the stickers on my wheels because they came off so I can’t see why they aren’t doing the led on your bike.
Had to wait 2 months for a new battery in the UK but Specialized did replace under warranty
I noticed with Specialized bearings in the past they actually don't put a lot of lube inside the waterproof caps I repacked my bearings and noticed a substantial difference in performance. Disappointed Specialized 😉
can you pls tell what are the tools to remove front ring? Castle nut remover and crank puller? Where to get them? also any 104 32t bcd narrow wide ring is ok?
igor goga It is a bearing puller. Castle nut can be bought from Chain Reaction.
nice video Sir.,i have a probkem with my Specialized Turbo Levo.,Can you help me how to fix the battery issue 3 red lights blinking?.,no discharge and wont charge.,Thank You.,😀
What would explain a buzzing sound coming from the motor. The sound appeared after it was opened up by a technician while he cleaned up contact.
How much torque must get the Motor bolts ? Thx
you don't put any kind of grease on it when riding?
Any link to that special chainring bult 🤷♂️
Is that the new brose?
For the Hell of it Ha ! maybe I’ll let Mr mechanic 👨🔧 do the deed nevertheless great show was Doddy in the audience 🤓🤓🤓
My chain guide snapped off, bought a replacement but not sure how to fit it? Can't work out how to get the clamp inside the gap
Hi, did you ever figure this out? I've got the same problem and it seems annoyingly complex, but I don't want to take it all apart and still not be able to even get to it.
Good video, but I will point out that you should never use a torque wrench as a normal ratchet, and definitely not to loosen loosen a fastener, like at 5:36. It is detrimental to the accuracy of the torque wrench
This bloke on you tube reconditioned several motors when the bearings get shot cheeper option for those out of warranty.
Be great to see a Kenevo engine remove and clean :)
What are the tools called to remove the crank?where can I get them please
cook9174 It is a 2 jawl bearing puller.
How did you remove the crank arm ? mine is a tough bugger
Usually an 8 mil allen key and a decent amount of force!
WHY DO BIKE CHAIN NOT HAVE O RINGS CHAINS LIKE MOTORCYCLES,THEY KEEP THE DIRT OUT AND LESS MAINTENANCE?
what about the warranty can be so unscrew the engine without losing the warranty?
You lose the (2 year) warranty the moment you open up the motor and not taking it off the bike unless you manage to damage it in the process.
Please show this with your bosch, yamaha and shimano drive bikes!
Yes please please
The Belt on my Bulls Evo was finished after 3000km... and 1,5 years. Short livetime...
Belt drives - Upside: Quieter, Smoother driving force. Downside: Wear out much quicker than gears! And not cheap to get replaced.. Unless under warranty of course, But still a pain to go through.
Mine looked more akin to a ploughed field when I took it off.
thats wot ur mom said
Which castle nut removal tool is needed?
Im looking for this answer too! Could someone post a link to the correct one?
@@thestaticvent I found out. It's the BBT-18 tool
There are a couple of "enemies" for this Brose motor:
1. Broken belts are happening quiet unexpected, but is not a real big deal if you are getting a spare part (gasket and belt).
2. Broken sprag bearings is a BIG problem and this will happen after a certain time, when the plastic cage breaks OR could even happen when you are hitting hard a stone with your pedale, hell of a job and quiet expensive.
3. Water is always a problem, even if you are not using a power washer. The water will get into the needle bearing and the corrosion will just then damage all other bearings, sprag bearings and also the crank shaft.
I don´t believe that Specialized have fixed all these problems on the new 2022 motors but if anybody here can comment that I would be glad to hear that?
I’m looking at buying the same bike as a commuter bad idea?
What is the tool at 1:39 called ? Is it universal ? Can anyone point me to a shop selling it europe ?
Two-arm crank puller. Do an online search. You're bound to find many places in Europe which sell the tool.
The inquisitive ah, not a crank puller. It is a bearing puller. Get one from Amazon.
Sealed for life..how about the levo bearing failures..sprag clutch.. belts snapping and chocolate gears
I was thinking about getting the Scott spark 710 is is any good?
You obviously dont ride when its muddy Steve you would get a very different picture if you did
I hope I live long enough than it would take me to do 9.5k miles on a E-bike!
lee nevin I noticed that statement too.
For me year 1 I rode 1700 miles this year in 6 months im at 1200. If he's correct ill be dead in 5 years. Lol
I managed to ride over 15,000 km in just under two years so I got a new motor FOC to replace the original which was making a horrible noise. The noise might have been damaged drive belt. Also, I'm still alive, just.
my belt died after ~3500km (gen3), just 10 months of riding
Steve or anyone... Where you get the Crank Puller?
Ralph Barbato it is called a bearing puller.
Nine and a half thousand miles is hardly a lifetime's riding, some would do that in a year or two, would be pretty disappointing to need a new motor every couple of years!
Jungs ihr braucht bevor ihr das ketten abzieht mit einem abzieher erst einen Blockring und die eine Sicherung rauszu drehen
If it ain’t broke....torque figures...dielectric grease on the connections...
I want walk assist 😕
Get a sexy nurse
You can add the switch and have your software updated for it to work. There’s a vid on CZcams on how it’s done. I did it for my 2016 Levo. Is a great upgrade.
Hmmm only only thing that needs replacing on that motor is the belt drive. Well that’s not exactly what’s happened with my specialise can either and the bearings. I don’t know about it outliving me. It’s not even lasted three years. Billy bullshitter i thinks
Appreciate the video but it would be even more helpful if you were more specific about the size of/and tools needed, such as the castle nut remover?
Lol that belt goes after 1000km
I don't think you will get 9000 miles out of a motor I'm on my 4th motor in 12 months. The brose motor is nothing but hassle in my opinion.
First
Anyone know where i can buy a castle nut remover?

sorry to say this but there is alot of sponsor talk in this channel ,never a real review of a bike ,do they break, error codes ,cost. long term test.i might be seald for life but not built for life, got bearing that will break ,and just sens the belt can hold 9000km dosent mean the rest of the motor will.
And not a torque wrench in sight
kinza999 5:33 but he was using it wrong anyway
John Richards he forgot to get it out the tool box
9000 miles for the belt 🤣🤣
Hat this f..... bike and the motor is down!
