How to remove the battery, cranks and motor on a Specialized Turbo Levo SL

  • This is how you remove the Specialized Turbo Levo SL 1.1 motor and internal battery. Useful if you ever want to just use the 160Wh Range Extender only, saving 800g weight, or want to be able to put the bike on an aeroplane where you may be restricted by the 320Wh internal battery.
    Here's the tools you'll need (that I use)
    Torx Drivers: amzn.to/2Xnf7sg
    Hex Drivers: amzn.to/2yQ9zwS
    Torque Wrench: amzn.to/2XNjnAs
    Grease: amzn.to/2MlGqg9
    Thread Lock Medium: amzn.to/3dujMyo
    Pick tool: amzn.to/2Xng188
    Cassette Removal Tool: amzn.to/3chlKRa
    Park Tool PRS25 Stand: amzn.to/3eE40AV
    I've had a few rides on just the range extender only and it works really well. As it reaches the last 20% power does drop off considerably, but thats understandably as it the battery voltage drops.
    Please note, that riding without the main battery could risk water ingress in the main battery connector if not correctly sealed. With 2 open battery holes located on the down tube I'd recommend that you exercise caution in wet weather. Although the battery connector can be sealed with plastic wrap / tape, there is still a chance of water ingress as it is no longer connected directly to the battery with the water tight plug.
    The motor is water tight. Marine-grade seals mean the motor is dust and waterproof to IP66 & IP67 standards,

    Great detailed video Rob! I’m wondering if it would be easier to just drop the motor out completely instead of removing the drive side crank arm and chainring? I’m assuming the need to remove the drive side crank arm and chainring is because the motor can’t swing back without interference with the chainstay and chainring?

    • @RobRidesEMTB
      @RobRidesEMTB  Před 4 lety +10

      Hi Steven, actually I saw a guy that has mentioned that you can just drop the motor completely, just need to remove all 6 bolts. Then no need to remove chain ring.

    • @JB-68
      @JB-68 Před 4 lety

      Probably removing rear wheel then only chain guide + 6 bolts must be good enough

    • @wallylo9994
      @wallylo9994 Před 3 lety +2

      @@RobRidesEMTB Yup just did it today. Remove the 6 bolts altogether and saves the hassle of muscling the crank arm off. Tip: if you have small enough hands (like mine), you can actually reach up the downtube and tape some electrical tape from the inside to reduce the risk of water ingress. I did that to both battery holes that no longer take the screw obviously because there's no downtube battery to screw them into. Good tip on the bubble wrap though. I also threw a bit of electrical tape to the two connectors that connect the motor to the TCU just as an extra precaution.

      Hey Rob. As you’ve been I see there could you maybe comment on cable / hose routing. Thanks f I need to you’re a new rear brake hose I’d expect to maybe use the old one to pull the new one through. But a LBS told me it’s a matter of taking out motor and battery to change the rear brake hose. 1.5 hours. Wonder if there’s a workaround.

      @@CMneilB I replaced my SRAM rear brake with Hope a few weeks ago. I cut the SRAM hose at the calliper end and the new Hope hose at the lever end. I joined the SRAM and Hope hoses together with the recommended double-end RockShox barb (£1.50 from Amazon). I then slowly PUSHED the new Hope cable through from the rear end. Very easy! No need to drop the motor or remove the battery.

    Thanks Rob for the video. I don't have a pick tool and could not get the "retaining ring" off. So I will just drop the motor as others have suggested to get to the battery. I ride mainly unassisted and use the SL's motor only on the steepest of climbs to make the ride more enjoyable. I took a 3 hour ride yesterday and only used 4% of the (main) battery. So I have more battery than I need. Relying only on a RE battery alson makes much for sense for what I'm doing, and, yes, I'm an admitted weight weenie and losing 800 grams by removing the main battery fits my needs. Thanks for confirming that I can do this!!

    Is it possible to remove just the chainring from the spider, rather than remove the entire crankarm? Idid this on my Creo and removed just the chainring, which is a lot easier than removing the entire crankarm, and gave me clear access to the drive side motor bolts. Not sure if the Levo chainring is set up the way or if the crankarm would have to come completely off.

    Hey Rob, this is super helpful. I needed the guide as reference to Specialized Creo gravel bike that I need to remove the internal battery to fly with. Great to have you confirm that you can run just on the bottle battery extender with no internal battery in. Specialized dont seem to advertise this feature, but being able to fly with ebike and take a couple of the portable bottle batteries is a great selling point from their point of view. Just wandering, did you by the Levo SL for yourself? Just wandering if you rated it good enough and lack of power not too detrimental to spend your own hard cash on one! Specialized should have sponsored this video as it very well done and useful information for someone buying one of their products with the Turbo SL system. Cheers as ever mate, from Vienna, Austria.

    Hi my understanding is that you are able to take this bike on a plane without removing the battery due to its capacity being within the legal requirements. Also I think I read somewhere that you have to have some charge in the main battery for the motor to work. You can’t run the bike just on range extenders only. Not sure if that is true, I will test it and see if it works.

      Have got as far as the chainring and spider and they will not budge. No lock ring that I can see anywhere. Just the 3mm Grub screw. Undone that and the spider just won’t budge. Do I need a puller?

    160Wh range extender? I have a larger battery in my toothbrush!

    It was easier and less work for me by removing the motor, cranks/Chainring intact with the motor. Slid the battery out and cleaned the inside the bay and cleaning the motor was a breeze.

    that is just waaaay too complicated, is this even allowed ? does it break the warranty ?

      +1 Could we really use this SL without internal battery, perhaps the battery is a key part of the structure itself, strengthen it. Is this validated by Specialized ?

      @@JB-68 I don't think so, just my experience in stripping mine, but it sits very lightly/loosely in the down-tube.

    No specialty tools needed to remove drive side crank arm! I have to remove it to service all pivot bearings .

    Not sure that the benefits of this are that clear unless you are travelling, and leaving open bolt holes in the outer down tube is simply dumb.

    • @RobRidesEMTB
      @RobRidesEMTB  Před 4 lety

      Yes, bolt holes are prone to allowing water ingress. I pointed that out in my description :-) But I've been riding with the the range extender for a couple of weeks, works quite well, and a few folks asked how to do it so I made the vid. Cheers, Rob.

      Rob Rides EMTB was not calling you dumb, I think you are probably the most trustworthy reviewer I follow. You also come across as a genuinely good guy as well.

    And when with your levo ( at a price bw 4900 to 12900,- €uros), you don’t get any dashboard, and as a marketing response, we are told that no dashboard permits to admire landscapes... Bosch mounted have choice bw purion, kiox color tft, and the all new NYON 2020 tft color computer with GPS galileo (metric precision)... and the 1150 watts dual battery real time management as the one we find on cargo’s engine. For me Specialized are over rated products... never and never
