  • Removing and replacing the alternator (generator) on the petrol Duratec. A little awkward but perfectly doable. The car featured is a Mk3 Mondeo (2000-07); the alternator set-up does not vary much on the Duratec range but access may differ a little.

      Nice to see that you still take care of this old mondeo :)Thanx to you, I still drive my 02 1.8 270k km duratec mondeo, I do most of repairs myself even though I have just basic tools. Not really a lot has gone wrong with mine, if you consider cars age. Well apart from a major issue - flaps and metal got inside of the engine... made horrible metal sounds :O . Like 5cm of metal rod holding the flaps was missing, but get this - engine is still fine. I was very very lucky it seems and all the metal pieces must have gotten out on its own through the valves. They did make a lot of marks on the piston (seen on camera through spark plug hole). After this happended I can still do 200km/h (so no power/compresion was lost) and if I drive really really nice in the summer I can do 1k km per tank. For me its a reliable engine, and for my use 10k km yearly its also very economical. It has a little rust here and there, but thats normal :)
      Any plans of buying a new (or another used) car?

      Instead of removing black plastic cowl from alt to get it out could you have removed the top strut mounting brace that appeared to be the problem? And also it is good practice to ensure the polyVee belt is replaced so the direction of rotation is the same as it was previously.

    • @CraigsDIY
      @CraigsDIY  Před 5 lety

      Yes... but 4 8mm nuts are an awful lot easier. No need to take the belt off the engine.

      @Law_Abiding_Citizen_ok Před 5 lety

      Yes agree, if belt is not totally removed from situ then all good but if it is taken out of engine bay for a good inspection then really needs to go back with same direction of rotation.

    My dad has an 05’ mondeo hatchback, 1.8. Having to replace alternator as the car cut out while driving and the battery light came on in red, battery was changed, light was still on then car cut out again. So i’ll have to change it later on during the month, and hopefully the alternator will charge the battery again. If you or anybody else have an idea of what else could be causing the car not to charge and subsequently cutting the engine off, i’m all ears.
    Great video though! Very easy to understand and well put tigether

    In St220 only way to remove alternator is wheel hub. But is not necessary to disconnect steering rod, just enough to disconnect stabilizer link.

    Undo the exhaust heat shield to make enough room to take the alternator out from the top without diassesmbly (except for removal of the intake pipe).
    Two bolts secure the top part to the engine, and then four hold the top half to the bottom half. And then just two bolts which can be slightly loosened off for the bottom part and then slide rearwards out of their brackets.
    The lower half can't be removed due to no room, but it can be moved out of the way to get the alternator out..

    To me, tie rod was really easy to take off. Losen the nut, hit it couple of times with a sledgehammer, and off it goes. I don't understand, that how it is easier to take that plastic cover out🤔

    What were the symptoms you were fighting Craig? My Mondeo sometimes has a charging problem, but only stationary with the aircon on. So I thought of slip on some pulley. Thanks for excellent video once again.

      @CraigsDIY  Před 5 lety +1

      Nothing wrong with the alternator, the over-run pulley had seized. What's the problem exactly? No charging voltage when air-con on?

    Hello, good morning, I am a follower of your channel and I am contacting you, to be able to comment on the following situation that occurs in my vehicle, Ford mondeo mk2 2.5 v6, one morning the battery was discharged, without knowing how to change the battery, when month or so, the car stopped in full operation, it was as if the electricity had died, stop, giving it and giving it until it started, again as if the battery was without charge, it was only a month old, I changed the alternator regulator , and well, I bought it, it charges over 14.5V, and I considered the fault finished, one day cleaning the interior, I left the radio on, while I cleaned, and nothing a few minutes later, the voltage began to drop, less to less, until the battery was discharged at that moment, I was surprised because that had never happened to him, I did another test, with the battery charged again, I gave the contact, after a short time, equal to less to less , that in a moment the battery goes away, I recharge it, install it, and leave it and connected approximately 2 months, until I realized that the red light of the alarm did not blink, I checked it and discharged, that did not happen in the past either, it carried out the current leakage test with the multimeter, because I told myself that this would have to be a current leak, it is the logical thing to think, and what was my surprise, that the value it gave is 0.02 amps, with the battery just charged, so there is no current leak, I have also carried out the voltage drop test and it gives 000v both positive and negative, and then what happens to it? I don't even know what else to do, regarding what I am explaining to you, I await your prompt clarification, please, greetings.

    • @CraigsDIY
      @CraigsDIY  Před 2 lety +1

      Did you replace the battery? It sounds like it's just old and not holding charge. Initial fault of car stopping separate issue of alternator, apparently fixed by regulator replacement. Test the battery properly, either do an engine-start voltage-drop test, or borrow a battery tester from auto store or electrician. do you know whether your alternator was from factory? I have the same car and engine i thought but my alternator has a standard pulley as opposed to the clutch type on yours. Wondering if it was aftermarket or Ford changed it maybe? Thanks for the videos they are a real help

    I have this car, 2002 model, 1.8 125 ps. I have done 250.000km with this car and the 100.000 of this is with lpg system on it. Now, i have problems with oil oil consumption. It is about 3 lt every 5.000 km. What is your opinion about this. I will go to rebuild the engine. I dont want to buy other engine that i dont know what it is.

      Engine at end of life honestly, they're rated for about 250K. I don't have experience with a rebuild but I know their bottom end isn't intended for it. Good luck.
