‘I’m afraid of many things,’ the Italian journalist Roberto Saviano has said. ‘But dying isn’t one of them.’ As the author of the international bestseller 'Gomorrah', which exposed the workings of the Neapolitan crime syndicate the Camorra, Saviano faces the possibility of retribution every day. His book - which has sold 10 million copies around the world - earned Saviano a death sentence from the crime bosses he had exposed. For the past nine years, he has lived under constant armed guard, moving from one secret location to another. None of this has deterred him from waging war on organised crime with words as his only weapon. His reportage has helped secure life sentences for 16 mafia ringleaders.
Roberto Saviano made a rare appearance in the UK when he came to the Intelligence Squared stage. In conversation with BBC foreign correspondent Fergal Keane, Saviano talked about his life in hiding and his beginnings as a reporter on the streets of Naples. He revealed his latest work of investigative reporting, 'Zero Zero Zero', in which he delves into the sprawling network of the global cocaine trade. He traced how the $400 billion a year generated by drugs trafficking filters into the international banking system through money laundering from Wall Street to the City of London. The cocaine trade isn’t just a playground for criminals, Saviano argued. It is part of the structure of our global economy where some of the biggest players - the banks - have profited without facing a single criminal conviction.

it's a hard job for the interpreter: Saviano's language is very articulate using plenty of sayings, expressions that are not easy to translate on the spot, it'd be testing even for the best interpreters.

I noticed that people are winging about the translator. I think she is great. The topic is complex. She is very smart and can translate the speak of Roberto. Please do not put rubbish to the translator.. it is not easy to translate exactly all the words. Please do not complain about the translator she did a great job. I am an Italian native speaker. Nonetheless the Mafia opic is not all about drug... thera are other topic , for example mafia is running waste business and more....

Exactly Tiziano! Well said. Saviano uses many articulations. Also, when he makes a sentence, as good Italian he is, he says a lot in short. Not easy to report every single thing. For those that complain, just think that she is translating in a theatre and for an online video. Therefore, she has to make it quick but easy to catch. Not easy.

because is not a topic that many wants to face either in Italy or abroad. "Mafia" is often associated with a flkloristic stuff that does not exists out of italian borders, a phonomenon good to make movies. Saviano has shown in many occasion that is not folklore or mere literature stuff, therefore part of the system ( as the society in general) simply is trying to shut it down because exposing how far mafia has gon would put lots of very high enviroments in troubles. In the end, mafia is not just the shooting and the Godfather movie, is a parallel culture that grows side by side with the good part of society, it can be defined as a whole " civilasation" that exists under the radar and must stay under the radar. Saviano is living escorted by the forces exactly because he made the type of noise that organized crime does NOT want. :(

The translator forgets too many details, better to choose a translator that is interested to this sort of subject, I have the impression she is not really a bad translator, just trying to translate a subject which is not her favorite hence not accustomed with.

No one can remember sentences that long and also translate them accurately. Interpreters typically translate in real-time, but this exercise of memory is usually not required. She did an excellent job, her interest in the subject has nothing to do with it. Your criticism is unfair and completely uncalled for.

What happened in this debate is surreal; I don't speak english yet I understood the wrong translations and (much more important) the meaning of many concepts who her lost; I understand the emotion and the difficulty of live translation but this is not the right way to work.
I don't want to be too rude with the translator and the fault it's for me of people who organized but in any case it should be better prepared (or realize that she is unable to do that job).
