    ⚠MacOS Sonoma ⚠
    I was able to run MacOS Sonoma on the Surface Pro 7. Everything looks stable though the Wi-Fi may have some issue with your setup. With mine it works fine but the version is still not stable, so I had to warn you. Potential issues can be found here: github.com/OpenIntelWireless/itlwm/issues
    The video instruction is still valid. But you will need a few additional steps.
    1. Command to install Sonoma to your USB drive:
    sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sonoma.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/MyVolume
    Once you have the bootable USB with the EFI folder ready, before booting the Surface and installing it, you have to replace a bunch of files.
    2. Go here github.com/OpenIntelWireless/itlwm/releases
    3. Click on the Assets of the recent release and download Airportitlwm-Sonoma, extract it. (I used v2.3.0-alpha)
    4. Copy the extracted Airportitlwm.kext file and put it to EFI/OC/Kexts (replace the existing one)
    5. Download github.com/acidanthera/Lilu/releases/download/1.6.7/Lilu-1.6.7-RELEASE.zip and extract it.
    6. Copy the extracted Lilu.kext file and put it to EFI/OC/Kexts (replace the existing one)
    7. Download github.com/acidanthera/WhateverGreen/releases/download/1.6.6/WhateverGreen-1.6.6-RELEASE.zip and extract it.
    8. Copy the extracted WhateverGreen.kext file and put it to EFI/OC/Kexts (replace the existing one)
    9. Download github.com/acidanthera/AppleALC/releases/download/1.8.8/AppleALC-1.8.8-RELEASE.zip and extract it.
    10. Copy the extracted AppleALC.kext file and put it to EFI/OC/Kexts (replace the existing one)
    11. Download github.com/OpenIntelWireless/IntelBluetoothFirmware/releases/download/v2.3.0/IntelBluetooth-v2.3.0.zip and extract it.
    12. Copy the extracted IntelBluetoothFirmware.kext file and put it to EFI/OC/Kexts (replace the existing one)
    13. Download github.com/acidanthera/BrcmPatchRAM/releases/download/2.6.7/BrcmPatchRAM-2.6.7-RELEASE.zip and extract it.
    14. Copy the extracted BlueToolFixup.kext file and put it to EFI/OC/Kexts (replace the existing one)
    15. Open EFI/OC/config.plist with any text editor
    16. Search for: AABaig==
    17. Replace it with AABSig==
    18. Save the file. We are now ready to install Sonoma.
    For those who have already Ventura installed and wishing to upgrade, I suggest to do so via the bootable USB too. It should not wipe your data. And once you update, don't forget to update EFI on your Surface.

    You forgot to mention that a VM disk first needs to be initialised with disk utility (or: wiped) before the install can take place on that disk. Then on an Intel 8th gen HP laptop the VM installation is only 20 minutes, not 4 hours.

    I’m at the part where you are installing at 14:19 - There is not a walkthrough tutorial to set up a hard drive and format it properly for Mac installation at this step. Just thought I’d add that to the comments if people may get confused at this part. You will need to format an external drive to Mac journaled. You won’t be able to use your internal windows drive.

    How is the sleep and sound functionality? I had this running last year, but I found that it would not sleep correctly 75% of the time. It would keep using power despite the cover being on, or put to sleep. I would also hear a faint hissing in the background from the speakers. Can you tell me if this issue has been resolved? I love the video! It reignited my attempt of possibly getting my mother a SP7 so that I can install MacOS on it for her. Upgraded to a SP8 after MacOS had the battery and sound issue.

    First off, thank you for the very in-depth tutorial! I am now at the setup-stage, after installing Ventura on the formatted drive. But after the final reboot, I am presented with the 'Select your country'-screen which is blank. When I try to restart the Surface, I can choose 'United States', but after continuing I am left with a grey background and a spinning color-wheel. After a few seconds 'the assistant closes unexpectedly'. Any ideas what I might be missing?
    EDIT: Got it working. For anyone having similar problems, I deactivated the OpenIntelWireless-.kexts (AirportItlwm and itlwm) in the config.plist and installed macOS again. So in the installer it never showed me the Wi-Fi symbol in the top bar but that's no problem, you can configure macOS on first boot without Internet and when finished activate AirportItlwm (or itlwm, never both at the same time) and use Wi-Fi/Bluetooth.

    Too bad only after a long day of following and executing the instructions I read in the comments below that this procedure is not for the Surface Pro 7+ - the device I own. What step exactly does not work on the 7+? The good thing of the 7+ is of course the ability to upgrade the SDD which I did to 1TB making it ideal for extra OSes to install. I would hate corrupting the EFI so I will stay away from that if it's risky. I already crippled my SecureBoot with an Ubuntu install, surface core and subsequent mokutil reinstall, but I still have a working Surface booting Windows from grub. The good thing from all this is I have a great working VM with Sonoma. For the 7+ I'll probably move on with an ElementaryOS install which has a really nice MacOS theme. As you say in the beginning, if you want something really fast like a Mac buy a Mac. Further I doubt the real value of MacOS on my Surface. I have not read how MacOS on the Surface handles detaching the keyboard and present the on screen keyboard - if it doesnt than the value of this exercise is minimal anyway. My Surface Pro 7+ with keyboard is about 1kg which a MacBook gets quite close to. And with the Mac you have by far the best touchpad. Finally you mention to stay away from updates which makes this a totally geek action without any reasonable practicality. If you want or need MacOS temporarily then use a VM as you introduced. So for now my Geekjourney for MacOS on my Surface stops but thanks for your effort and clear instructions.

      Lots of things. Here most of the steps rely on Windows and Windows apps. MacOS has alternative apps too but those will need skills to operate. If you can have windows temporarily installed on an SSD and boot from it, then it should be easier. Then you basically can delete all windows partitions from Surface SSD (except the first one - the EFI) and format the rest of the SSD as exfat. And once you are in the macos installer, you reformat exfat to macos journalised and install macos there.

      Launch Terminal, type “diskutil list”, find the EFI partition of your Surface and remember the XY numbers of the “diskXsY” it it listed with. Then type “sudo diskutil mount /dev/diskXsY” with XY matching the EFI partition. Now you should have it.
      I personally don’t like doing it from macOS because it adds some invisible files to the partition and you might run out of space.

      If the Secure Boot is on, only the loader with the right key would be able to run. By default it’s Windows loader. If you want to run another loader (macOS loader in this case), you have to disable the Secure Boot.

      No, you don’t have to reinstall the macOS if you just want to update the kexts. 2.3.0 is fresh and may still contain bugs. Also be sure that you downloaded the version for your version of the macOS. And last thought: 2.3.0 may require to update some other kexts as well.

    I can start the installatin process, but when it restarts is goes to Windows. It never goes to 46:32 "Select your country or region"
    I tried choosing "boot usb" in the troubleshoot options.

    No luck.
    What's missing?

    • @parametr
      @parametr Před 8 měsíci

      I found a way.
      I just formatted my external ssd as a installation drive, same as explained in the "Preparing the installer" section.
      So now I have the external ssd and a flash drive prepared as installers.
      Then, I delete the contents of all partitions in the external ssd.
      Then, I connect the external ssd and the falsh drive to the Surface and boot.
      Then, I install MacOS into the external ssd.
      Then, I take the external external ssd and copy the contents of the EFI folder into the external ssd (in the small EFI partition).
      I boot with only the external ssd connected and I continue with the installation process.

      Could be that when creating the VM and configuring the storage, the dynamic allocation was turned on. You need to recreate VM and select the storage option which would create it as a single file. That might help. Also when macos installer boots up, check the disk utility. Maybe the storage needs to be formatted, but I doubt that’s the reason.
