      It sounds like his Mom has a very expensive life style, and just got cut off by her ex-husband. Now she wants her son to foot the bill for her life style. What the son can do is buy his own medium sized house, and follow Dave's baby steps to secure his own financial situation. At that point, he can say, hey Mom, if you want, you can move in with me, for very little extra expense. But I can't pay for your life style for the next 20 years.

      It is quite possible that she has a very expensive house with a mortgage that she got in the divorce. Alimony is taxable income, so she is probably looking at $11k or $12k/month after tax. If she's in a $2M+ house with a mortgage, the payments could easily be $10k a month. My guess would be she took the house in the divorce, but the alimony was barely enough to keep her above water.

Even if you do marry someone poorer than you, you're not expected to change their job title or automatically offer a comfort of not having to do the extra work that they would've done if you were not in that relationship. Same as these callers you see here, just because you make 200/4/5/6k a year doesn't mean a lot if the job's been handed down through relationships of your parents/family have created and they give you the opportunity to earn that. A lot of ppl making over 100k a year couldn't even tell you where they spend 3/4 of their monthly income. My point being, don't stuff up your nose at someone that has less $ to show for in the bank just because you're now in a better position, remember where you started and remember the people who landed a hand and gave you trust so you can pull yourself back up. Look to do the same where it makes sense.

      Easy come easy go. $15k/month in a big nice house means she married someone really wealthy. Once you live that lifestyle its hard to give it up and then when you divorce and hear $180k per year just because you were once married to someone why stop spending? Imagine if you still got 25% of your regular salary from any of your prior jobs. Why stop spending that paycheck?

Downsizing to that degree is not an option poor people have since they are already scraping bottom of the barrel. They would need to seek income to make it work.

      goraidersndodgers I know people who could buy their car in cash, but choose not to in order to “build credit” to help them get a mortgage. It’s weird in the Dave Ramsay world. But it is common advice everywhere else to get a car payment even if you could buy your car twice over in cash. ( my car was paid for in cash though)

I can't think of one profession below management that makes that kind of money. At 70 years old, the house should've at least paid off or they have a whole bunch of assets.

      @@ektorkornoo8806 I said it's EXTREMELY rare at that AGE, not impossible. I work in the IT industry in management so I know how much engineers make. It's RARE for a software developer to make $200k year. MOST fall in the $100-$150k/year range. And these are experienced, age 30+ usually.

      @UR A Meathead In 2019, more than 100,000 women gave birth in their 40's. More and more women are focusing on their careers and travel at a younger age, waiting for marriage and children later in life.
      Additionally, a lot of women have issues having kids, and since IVF is expensive, many have to wait until they can afford it.
      So yes, its become quite normal.

      There are many jobs that can make 200k that young, most people just don’t see them that way, ask around to your local tradesmen. Plumbers, electricians, HVAC, etc. I was making 100k as an 18 year old kid working on power lines. 200-250 k a year doing the same thing at 26 now. Working 2000+- hours of OT a year. It’s out there.

All my friends thought I was crazy, cause I went to a tech college and got an associates in applied science instead of going to a big university and collecting thousands in debt. Literally paid my way through college each semester by working on the side. No debt out of college, became a journeyman lineman by 22. Haven’t looked back since. Most people have no idea the amount of money a skilled laborer as yourself can make. They just say “ oh he does construction”. Lol. I love it.

This is the new form of relationship today and it cripples both parties and it needs to evolve or all of humanity will get worse rather then healthy and independent. You might want to do your own research on co-dependent relationships because it's not a healthy love dynamic and it cripples both parties involved.

      @@esonon5210 IT is one of the few fields where you can remotely work for a company based in one end of the earth, while staying at your house on the other end. Software Engineering is no different.

    I’m a woman and here’s my perspective... this is why women should never rely on a man for financial support, whether married to him or divorced from him! This is absolutely absurd! I will give the mother credit for not having asked her son for the money, but if she needs it, she is completely financially inept and I don’t blame her ex husband for not wanting to fund her extravagant lifestyle 5-6 years post-divorce. Men and women BOTH need to be earning an income.

    Her ex shouldn't be paying her $15K a month alimony! She's an adult. She should be supporting herself. The ex is not responsible for supporting someone who is no longer married to him unless she put him through college, and certainly not $15K a month.
