Sorry folks, but in sheer speed, knowledge and accuracy, Yngwie would tear EVH up quickly and rip him to shreds. Yngwie plays in a Neo Classical mode which is of a higher degree of difficulty than the blues / pentatonic mode which EVH typically uses. That’s where I will stop because song writing and composing is a whole different category. I was only referring to just pure playing only. Although in Yngwies defense, he is a great composer of Neo classical music which is his specialty.
Yes yngwie is a guitar legend, and his technique is incredible. But he never produced anything like a mean streets or eruption lighting up the sky unchained etc. Nor did he revolutionize everything from guitars and effects to amps forever.
The musician to be remembered is not necessarily the fastest player, but who made the better music overall.
Scales are scales and harmonic minor isn’t any harder than Dorian , Ionian , natural minor.
sorry but VH did more than modes, he composed great songs and had a rythmn and vocals perfect, and sounded refreshing, I doubt you know anything about harmony, cause edward’s did more than a diminished scale which is sad , really
If I have to pick one, it will most definitely be EVH no doubt. Yngwie doesn't have the music intensity that EVH has.

Both are incredibly talented, but I gotta go with EVH.
One crafted songs that will stand the test time and sold millions of records. The other was a 80s shred God that only guitarists are familiar with while the general public has no real clue about.

It's like saying who's the better actor De Niro or Al Pacino. Yngwie has a style that no one can copy and EVH.

Both are genius of own style, and the best VH solo is during the 86 tour as you can see in Live without a net .
In my opinion Malmsteen and Van Halen are the alpha and omega of hard rock/heavy metal guitar.

They are both genuinely excellent, but this is like comparing Picasso with DaVinci.
EVH was an original sound and completely changed the guitar world.. Yngwie is a ripper but, my grandma can play yngwie scales on the piano..

I love them both, but get real....Eddie had his time to shine bright in the late 70's. Yngwie came along and completely blew people's minds and took it all to a whole other level and raised the bar again. The extreme playing that you hear today from people who actually play anything other than blues, started after Yngwie came on the scene....no one did the arpeggios and sweep picking, long warp speed phrases till Yngwie came along...Now they all try it.
Before 1984, Yngwie J. Malmsteen was already a better guitar player than Eddie Van Halen!! 🤷♂️🤭🤣

Love them both. Malmsteen is my favorite, but general listening, Ed is awesome. Working on a Malmsteen Strat project, playing some VH in the band tonight. All good.

I love both of them! Eddie, for redefining how modern rock guitar is played and amplifiers are built, and Yngwie for blessing us with Bach and Roll and badass arpeggios! Two titans, in the pantheon of guitar Gods!🤘

Van Halen was a monster soloist but come on: their songs suck and will not stand the test of time. Neither Yngwie nor Eddie leaves us with Child in Time, Smoke on the Water Stairway to Heaven, Paranoid or Hey Joe. Both could not reallly write really the great songs like other bands did. I do not listen to their music either. All this constant shredding makes me nervous.
