Like there was something else going on… BESIDES the actual face mask… Which - if you look at the NFL’s statement it released on its website at the time - seems all the more realistic.
Check out this excerpt from the memo: “A study conducted by the University of New Hampshire for the NFL states that the added weight of the masks negatively affects the structure of the helmet, can cause neck fatigue that could lead to a more head-down posture during contact and can provide a false sense of security during tackling.”
Today we present, The REAL REASON that the NFL Banned Customized Face Masks.

I wore one through all of highschool, I played OL/DL. It did add a lot more weight. It was actually a lot heavier then a helmet with a “regular” face mask. But it did help a lot from people shoving fingers in the helmet to jab at eyes nose and mouth. Or punching inside the mask when coming out of yoir stance. But I did see a TE go to stiff arm our outside linebacker with the same face mask as me and he broke his finger and ended up having to amputate the tip end of his pinky due to it being broke and messing with ligaments. I think pros definitely out way the cons but that’s coming from 18 year old kid. I’m sure the NFLs scientist have a lot more qualified and more intelligent reasoning for the ban than I could understand lol.

At the time these masks were popular we contacted the small company that was originally making them out of their barn. They exploded in popularity when Tuck and others started wearing the mask. They opened a manufacturing warehouse and were on back order for months. The owner of this company said Riddle got involved because they were the exclusive NFL helmet provider at the time. I would always use that for my players, I would edit existing players and put that face mask on them and they would always look cool.

If testing and safety were the NFL's concern they could have limited the custom face masks to one per team per season. That limits the amount of safety testing needed while also giving teams some individuality.

that's a good idea. make it optional but one design per team. It would reflect the team's character, creativity, playing style. yeah, that's a great idea. I like it.

if they weren't banned, think of all the custom helmets players would wear. We would have competition of who has the better helmet design

my first thought when I started noticing the face protections was "wow, the league is really looking out for the guys who take a lot of face/head contact by designing these for them. Plus, they look kinda cool". I should've known better. Otherwise, I barely noticed.

Around that time, I remember someone on ESPN mentioning a safety issue. "An opposing player's fingers could get caught in the small portions of the custom mask and cause an injury". But hearing about why the PLAYERS needed it, and that it prevented injuries, I don't see why the NFL didn't ATTEMPT to create feasible alternatives, as the video commentator stated. Oh well....

Yeah but couldn't you just have them approved by the league? If you want to wear a custom face mask there could be an approval process you could even charge the players a small fee to fund it
