The elaborate helmet guard rule makes sense. In the NHL goalie face mask cages have to go through a testing process before being certified for league play. There are like two styles so the process isn't terribly difficult. I can imagine testing each style of face mask on each type of helmet would be way to complex and time consuming for the NFL to do.

Justin Tucks facemask was for a medical reason. It stopped olineman from grabbing the facemask and causing a neck injury that he always been fighting.

All of these rules make sense. They're protecting players safety and the way the game looks on TV, which is the primary revenue for the NFL. On a personal level, I love team sports and I've never heard anyone complain about this sort of thing unless they were an egomaniac who wanted to look "better" than all of their teammates.
What’s wrong with wanting to stand out? Yeah I get it, you’re a team, but there’s nothing wrong with a bit of flair. I believe that as long as it’s purely cosmetic (unlike things like hard jewelry which could cause problems even on accident) and doesn’t affect player safety. Who cares what you wear as long as you have the team’s uniform on and you’re not offending anyone? Joker visor? Go for it. Spiffy cleats? Why not? I’m just not seeing the issue with those.

Even to a built-up neck wearing an extra three pounds for a hour is stress. Not to mention the extra momentum and risk of injury when such a heavy mask gets grabbed while moving fast.

NFL appears to try to keep the fiction that this is a business, not entertainment. It would be interesting to see what would happen if, in one game, both teams tried to take a "pure business" approach.
That is to say, touchdown? Just go to bench and sit down. Tackle? Immediately and quietly go to the huddle. Fist thrusting at a field goal? Nope, just go to the bench. Yelling at the official? Nope. Just turn away and don't even acknowledge his presence. Excitement - stifle it.

I think it’s less about image on some of these and more about safety. Sure it’s about image to an extent because they want players to look professional but there are liabilities and safety regulations that tie in with them. Like OBJs ridiculous watch, the NFL isn’t replacing that if it gets broken. But OBJ is notorious for being a huge crybaby

Worst one I have seen is the attempt to ban players from wearing glasses if they needed to for medical but can't wear contacts their body rejects them, a reason why a kicker in the 2000's on the Colts had to retire was due to this stupid rule and he was willing to get the right type of glasses even. Even if you are wearing safety prescription clear glasses made for shooting guns and machine work rated higher then helmets, they are still ban. Dumb rule. Yes, I remember Chris H saying on TV it is a shame this player is retiring from the NFL becuse he is and the fact that is eyesight was an odd enough that Lasik or laser eye surgery was not an option. This is also why a few players in the NCAA now as of he 2000's never got drafted was due to needing prescription glasses and the NFL rules on them. Companies literally make impact resistant sports/safety glasses for a reason, the NBA where several players even in the modern era have used them to protect their eyes, this a sport without a helmet.
