I love this track. Such a bubbly sunny Saturday morning song. Love the quick opening. One of my favourite all-time albums. I love how it journeys around. Such rich lyrics.
I was a sixteen year high school student in NZ when I first heard Billy Bragg being played by an enormous first fifteen tight forward called Hugh Lintott in the art studio. Billy was like no one I had ever heard up until that stage. The clarity, humour and beauty of his lyrics just blew me away. Hard to pick between this and The Saturday Boy for favourite tune but this just edges it. A brilliant heart warming tune.
I used to listen to this album a lot with a college roommate. He worked several evenings a week as I did, but one night when we were both home, there was a tv show on PBS of Billy Bragg and Andy Kershaw going to Bolivia. At the end he said, "If I'd come home one night and you told me you had seen this, I wouldn't have believed you."
This man is truly a GOD given gift to mankind. He sings and writes music from the heart. Certain people were put here by GOD to entertain the world and billy Bragg is certainly one of them.
She stole the scene, and the scenery, the script, and the machinery.Sounds like one of my ex's.Best writer of heart-break love-songs of the last 25 yrs.Too bad so few have heard of him.His stuff is timeless.
Mermaid avenue is a cover of various artists of Woody Guthrie's songs who lived on mermaid avenue including Wilco who's from Chicago and Natalie merchant etc Folk like us
We didn't need youtube back then. this stuff was on the radio and on the telly. He sold a lot of records back in the day. strange hearing stuff like Between the Wars on the the top 40 countdown, and being able to buy it in woolworths and whsmith. I sound old. I know : )
You are mistaken there is no Johnny Marr on the album at all there is his mate Wiggy who lived next door and taught him to play guitar, there is Michelle Shocked, Kenny Jones, Martin Belmont, B.J. Cole and of course Billy himself, but no Johnny Marr does not play on this album. He did however feauture on the single version of Shirley, My Greetings to the New Brunette. excellent track live.

But the worst part is his songs are still as powerfully meaningful now as when he cut them in the 80's the message is still needed.

That is Johnny Marr playing that beautiful lead guitar 🎸 riff unless I am very much mistaken. Great song. Billy plays rhythm btw.
