Chorus:
On the last leg of a journey
They started a long time ago
The arc of a love affair
Rainbows in the high desert air
Mountain passes slipping into stone
Hearts and bones
Hearts and bones
Hearts and bones
It took years for the public to fully appreciate this song and album. Truly one of his absolute best.
Carrie Fisher: "If you can get Paul Simon to write a song about you, do it"
I'm 49 years old and discovered this song at 17. I save it for a treat, as I cry every time I hear it. A bittersweet calculated risk.
My favorite Paul tune, which is slightly astonishing considering his legendary body of work… this one just moves me beyond words. RIP Carrie Fisher.
Me 2😓🌹😍😍
"Love like lightning, shaking till
it moans"...
Mine, too!!
I feel much the same; Ben listening to this great troubadour now for 6 decades…
I wish someone was in love with me as much as paul simon was in love with any one that he ever wrote a song about
Paul is an American Treasure
I love this Paul song so much. It's deep and sweet. Maybe one of my favorite lyrics. Thank you , Paul Simon. Thank you for your songs. They have been good company in this long life❤
Listen to gimme shelter (stones) or things we said today (beatles) or life without u (Stevie Ray Vaughan )
Paul Simon, simply the best American songwriter ever, period.
@RobyLaPorte - truth 🤗 Head & shoulders above the rest, Paul Simon ⭐️
COCAINE MADE HIM A KING...............................
COKE IS IT?@@GaiaCarney
Certainly the best lyricist. On another level there
My favourite Paul Simon song. I first heard it at the age of 85yrs! Love it. Now keep playing it.
Strange this song isn't more famous and more revered. In my book it's his pinnacle, the best of all of them. Amazing sentiment, amazing song, never gets old. I will listen to it till I die.
I like Lincoln Duncan also, and American Tune......
He LOVED her. That’s all we need to know.
I'm with @mikethebeginner. If I had to pick one Paul Simon song, this would be the one. Apart from the fact that it's one of his most accessible, being recognisably about his relationship with the much missed Carrie Fisher, I just love the layered guitars, right down to the big bass guitarron. It sounds so simple until you actually start to unpack it. This is as good an example as you can get of why this man will endure when other artists have been forgotten.
Hearts & Bones Forever
This is one of the first albums that was recorded all digitally. Digital gets a bad rap sonically but Hearts and Bones sounds great. Also Hearts and Bones often gets overlooked in the shadow of the following Graceland but I always loved it.
Perhaps his most poetic, and most personal.
Yes!!!!💙💯💙
"You take two bodies and you twirl them into one
Their hearts and their bones
And they won’t come undone"
When my husband and I were breaking up... this line.. "why won't you love me for who I am where I am?"... this... this was our line. We just couldn't
Involuntary tear falls...thanks?
We all need to be loved for who we are where we are… otherwise… what does someone’s love even mean? It seems so simple… but that doesn’t make it simple. I hope you find a love that makes all the difference in your life.
I've listened to this song countless times. In my opinion, it's one of the greatest ever written.
Same, man.
I love the line, "Thinking back to the season before. Looking back through the cracks in the door." It somehow encapsulates my 20s, now so many years ago, in one line. Looking back at a life with the wisdom, but also the sadness, that only the passage of time provides. This song is a treasure, loaded with emotion and nostalgia...
Hearts- the passion and intensity of the moment.
Bones- all that remains through the passage of decades
@@serotoninsyndrome That's interesting. I've never thought of it like that, I usually think of hearts and bones meaning the entanglement of two people in such a way that even their hearts and their bones become inseparable. Even if they try to run from each other and forget their past, their hearts and their bones won't allow them to. "You take two bodies, and you twirl them into one. Their hearts and their bones, nah they won't come undone." Truly immaculate writing.
This album is most certainly one of my all-time favourites, which has evoked deep emotions in me. It is, though, regarded as a commercial failure and I’ll never understand why.😢
It's either this or Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car" for the best song ever written.
Paul is at the top of the list of iconic writers and performers. I am truly blessed to have grown up in the same generation... His music will live forever. Thank you sir.
Paul Simon will all ways be the greatest song writer.
Paul Simon, a wonderful poet and songwriter, thanks for all the beauty you gave to the world
I don't think that anybody could listen to the lyric of this song without being affected by it, and putting it into the context of their own loves and life. It is that sort of song.
you said it
Best Paul Simon song ever. It will be played on my funeral.
I live that part of New Mexico. The Sangre de Cristos Mountains are spectacular . Winding down the Valley of the Gods to the floor of the
Valley following a run off stream.Pure Bliss
This song just makes me cry every time. My boyfriend and I were having a fight one night at one of his gigs, there was a girl who was just being awful to me from his past.. on the long drive home on country roads at 1am, he played this song for me for the first time and we held hands and cried, feeling the love for each other across from each other in the car. I'm also Jewish and he's the Paul Simon fan...anyhow the words just hit me and it has morphed into being our favorite song we listen to together.
"Let's go driving end up down in Mexico.." escape everything else that doesn't matter
If I could write a poem as beautiful as bridge over troubled water, I would be stunned and a happy poet.
This songs plays through my mind on sultry warms nights when I am sitting alone
There are few songs in the American pop catalogue as poignant and touching as Hearts and Bones. This gorgeous song never fails to elicit a very strong emotion (a melancholy, yet satisfied calmness).
COKE IS IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@martinkent333 wow I’ll have what this guy’s having
Our best musical poet.
Jackson Browne, too.
Joni Mitchell too!
Hearts and Bones is my favorite Paul Simon album. I knew every song by the time I was about 5 because my dad would play this cassette (!) any time we were traveling a long distance. My dad's the reason I know about Steely Dan, the Alan Parsons Project, and so much more.
You were brought up right.
@valap_ I am crazy for Cat Stevens! My dad isn't too much of a fan, but he does like Gordon Lightfoot (me too!)
Pauls' songs have been the backdrop to my life. Since my son was a wee lad we've shared our love of his music and for that alone I'll be eternally grateful 😍😍
As close to perfection as you can get.
There are a couple of Paul Simon songs in that category, truly the best American artist
Im a total latecomer to this song but glad i eventually found it
Was introduced to this tune recently .
I can't say enough great things
Another great song by a great writer. Why is this never played on radio ?
And it is a stone fact Paul Simon is a poet.
He's a lyricist.
One of the best songs ever written❤
RIP our favorite Princess 👸🏻
Paul Simon. Thank you so much for creating your audiobook, Miracles and Wonder. Very much enjoying it.
Song is about Carrie Fisher and Paul Simon (hence 1 and 1 half wandering Jews), great lyrics overall and guitar playing. Song is fro a great album "Hearts and Bones" by Simon.
I love the images he creates. I love The Sangre de Cristo Mountains as well.
It was our sing and he married someone else but still sends me this song and wr meet up x
I love Paulo Simon his music moves me. Has me thinking about a future wife or future love i could have or something. Truly enchanting stuff his music.
hehehe
"SHE'S", ( maybe ) JUST AROUND the CORNER ... in your neighbourhood, or somewhere in a ( not so far ) FUTURE, ( space/time )....
I Wish you the BEST. 🙏🏻
Such a beautiful song, it touches sooo deep....Paul Simon you are an incredible artist, thank you 🙏💖🙏
I absolutely adore you, Paul Simon!
I think it's your ability to build separate, but "connected crescendos" in your music that I love the most about this song, and your Simon and Garfunkel songs.
Not that over keen on it and sometimes I just love his voice and how he uses it. 😊
I listen to this when I’m on the beach, so soothing, a beautiful escape.
Beautiful song
One of my favorite songs ever ever. Such a beautiful song. I wish Paul Simon and Carrie Fisher would have stayed together. They seemed really perfect together, like perfect. ☹️
This Simon song is so peaceful, it's been a favorite calming, beautiful one of my preference for decades
Love this song and this album so profound and underrated💜
I miss my person x
Beautiful, just as was Carrie…RIP troubled soul
A masterpiece x
Great song...Still Crazy still no 1 for me though i have to say
14/06/2024: I took a ride in evening after submitting the print file, down to King street and, inevitably, on Ossington. I just might be stuck in this city forever.
i gave this video its 1000th thumbs up. that was fun watching the counter change from 999 to 1k.
❤ I had a love like that.
1983, Dads car, family journeys. treasured memories.x
Love your songs.
Love Dylan Paul simon is simply the best!
Wate a story teller you are .
במיוחד בעיברית אוהבים
wow, beautiful.
Very long time I’ve known the importance and every sitch of this song.
Paul, God wants our heart, not the sacrifice. Sincerely, Rick Hemmle
I think he was saying they had an imperfect love but it wasn’t going to ever end. Am I right??
He's saying that it couldn't end even if they wanted it to.
@@123thof maybe that’s the greatest love of all, you just captured my parents. Merci! Anyway this song about paul and Carrie was about crushing lust! They had good sex and yay to them!!
@@lizadivine3785 I have always said that the problem isn't that true love fades. The problem is that it doesn't.
@@123thof yep you nailed it.
@@123thof Yes I think you're right, don't think he ever forgot her.

Thanks Bill
Has anybody heard the original recordings from this album, which also had Art Garfunkel on them, rather than it being just a Paul Simon solo album?
❤️🔥❤️🔥
I remeber, when i begon lqearning english (alone , first ), Paul Simon's Hearts & bones , was the Firdt song with lyrics on a 33 Tours, Ablum, i was anout 17 years old, but, don't know, How, or why, but. RIP Carrie.
Yeah
💗💗💗
Love that lyric “arc of a love affair”, especially as we all know it’s about Art 🤭
It’s about Carrie.
@@jiffybox I was only teasing.
It would be fitting though.
@@DaraM73 According to his audiobook, So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright is about Artie. He went off to study architecture.
I thought that before. Doh it's been how many years listening to this 40?
it's not about Art, according to all I've read about it.
Прекрасно
ハーツアンドボーンズのギターイントロは演奏すると快感だった。
最後の情熱的なストロークも格好いい。
このアルバムではreneandgeorgetmagrit with their dog after the warが一番好き。
昔走りながら聞いてたのを思いだす。なぜか大都会の静かな夜景を思い浮かべる。
The Beatles changed everything
And they didn't even know
I guarantee Paul Simon wouldn't mind my comment
And then Stevie Ray Vaugh comes along and turns everything
Now it's all A I
Stevie turned the clock back to real music...
😢
His hands rolling down her hair “
This is about his decade long off and on relationship with Carrie Fischer
I did that . Stole a girl away down to Mexico and had the best , yet limited time together .
There were so many in those days....
The beatles changed everything...
And don't forget that
Free to wander wherever they choose..Gringos
Did Steve Gadd actually play the drums with his hands on this song? No sticks?
When he wrote this he was about to marry Carrie Fisher.
Richard Tee no longer with us
Is it me or this is very similar to his song "graceland" ?
Except that Graceland is about after a breakup
Bullshit...he's great
But not the best
Been better if Art had been singing it
Been a Paul Simon fan for 43 years. Feel like I just discovered a this song anew. Its a good day. Thanks Paul
