A little correction to your statement on making sauerkraut. I have been making it for years. It is definitely NOT a smelly or messy process. And the upside is it has many times the probiotics that are in store bought kraut. It takes only about 5-10 days to bring a half gallon jar up to the tase most people I know like. It does take a little work, but it is well worth it.
I totally agree.
I make kraut in jars too. I agree. One thing to remember is quality cabbage makes quality kraut. Super sustainably maintained soil and picking after a good all night rain equals higher nutrient and soil microbe levels will go into kraut.
Also keep in mind the microbes break down the cells structure in the kraut to make the vitamins and mineral more easily absorbed by the human cells. And the probiotics survive the stomach acids as they are hidden within the kraut structure, therefore it’s much better than swallowing probiotics in capsule form.
Do you have a recipe you could share? I would like to try your recipe and method. Thanks if it's not too much trouble.
Native German here. I rinse my Sauerkraut, add 1/2 apple, 1 smoked ham hog, some pork belly, caraway seeds, some water and cook for 1 hour, turns out great in Instapot. Caraway seed take any gas issue and gives it a pleasant flavor.
Last but not least:
What do you call a grouchy German?
A sauerkraut! ✌️
LoL, thanks for carraway tip
As a child, I remember my mom buying a can of sauerkraut and rinsing it so it wouldn’t be so sour. When I started keto, I looked at the ingredients list. With that being said, I have found the inexpensive kraut is not fermented but has vinegar added. Buy the good brand, it is fermented and therefore, a lot, better for you and better tasting.
Aldi has a Jarred sauerkraut that comes from Germany that is just delicious
Your mom would have been a fan of white kimchi. It's made without the pepper, popular with kids and older folks who don't want the wild, delicious ride that is regular kimchi.
@@imahick5723 +1 for the Aldi sauerkraut, it's my go-to, but canned sauerkraut is great stuff, too. Much better than the stuff in the refrigerated section, which surprised me.
Appreciate this information Mil.
@@darkpatches LOL, “older folks”. I’m 66 and I love hot food and regular kimchi. But then again, I was raise on hot peppers. I grow my own habanero and ghost peppers and eat regularly. Never heard of the white kimchi. I’ll have to research that. Thanks
OMG. Your suggestions are amazing and you have a manner of speaking that is so authoritative yet engaging. I've been doing low carb for some time and just biting the bullet for lack of variety and boredom. Can't wait to try the seeds and Alfredo sauce! Thank you! Subscribed!🙏❤
Great tips, DB. I love my low-carb diet already, but adding a little variety is always a good thing. Interesting options. I will explore. Thanks!
Wow...awesome. Thank you! Going shopping this afternoon!!
Thank you! I was getting bored with my usual foods and you gave me many ideas utilizing these item!
PLEASE KEEP UP THE GOOD AND NOBLE WORK!! I AM VERY GRATEFUL!!
Always creative and helpful ~ thank you!
Thank you. Another excellent helpfull, well presented and informative short video.
I love Pesto, Sauerkraut & Kimchee and hemp hearts! I often put sauerkraut in my salad to mix it up a bit. I hadn’t thought of Alfredo sauce - good idea!
What a wonderful site. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. Inspirational🤗🌺🇦🇺
Many years ago I went to a restaurant and got hooked on their Corsican Steak. It was simply a strip steak with a layer of pesto and a roasted red pepper on top. Over the years I have done this to chicken as well!
Thank you for these options.
Another OUTSTANDING vid content, Dr. Becky! Learned so much n your channel. ❤️ it! Appreciate it so much. God Bless!🙏❣️
Kraut tips: add mustard makes it yummier, or add homemade salad dressing, we add kraut to a salad of muffuletta, avocado and feta cubes, mini tomatoes, hemp seeds.
Thank you , pls keep them coming!! Verity is good, makes keto diet more interesting. How about olives( Spanish or Italian) pumpkin seed, European cheese (grass feed) , boiled eggs, pickle vegetables,
Great tips for adding some variety, flavor AND nutritional value to my diet! Thanks!
These are all great ideas! Thank you!
Thank you for this video I never thought of using these items
Great information! Thank you
oh! thank you! These are awesome food choices can't wait to try them It is very true that you can get tired of the same foods It is so great to be able to spice thing up with new brands Just love listening to you Dr. Becky So glad I found you!!!
I love Hemp seeds as a snack or in salads, yum so crunchy!
Always great advice!
Thank you!! Great info!!
Great tips, Thankyou!!!!
Great suggestions!
You are absolutely right about the difficulties with sour because of sugar. I have experienced that myself and am now craving and eating sour, which never appealed to me before - even apple cider vinegar now tastes like a lemonade to me :-)
Sausage and sauerkraut is a quick easy go to meal in our house and has been even before I knew anything about low carb.
If you cook the saurkraut you kill all the good probiotics .
Good tips. Will try them. Tks
Great info; thank you!
A really good add to your list would be shirataki, yam noodles. They are a great substitute for spaghetti noodles for a keto diet. Very low calories and just 2 carbs and ZERO NET CARBS per serving.
They pair very well with Alfredo Sauce. And, for the creative you might try adding them to chicken and stock for keto chicken noodle soup.
I absolutely love pesto. I could put it on everything. Thanks for the tip Dr. Becky. Love the light blonde hair btw 😍👍🏾
Almost always have sauerkraut with pork. Its what we always had growing up at home. And sometimes have it when visiting my parents. I just recently started buying it myself and I usually toss in some fresh broccoli, cauliflower and or Brussels sprouts to steam with the sauerkraut. Yummy.
I'll be adding some of the other items to my shopping list to add some variety to the routine. Thx.
Thank you so much for this!
I really needed this, I'm having a difficult time getting enough healthy fat in my food plan
Helpful video, thanks!
Just found your channel. I was just diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and your 0-1-2-3 should be perfect fit for my reversing Type 2 diabetes.
Dr Sten Ekberg has wonderful teaching videos for diabetes.
This is awesome advice- many thanks 🙏😃
Thank you very much Dr Becky. 👏👏👏❤️
Great ideas and after more than a year on keto I’m glad to get some new ideas! I agree about taste changes - I loooove sauerkraut now and turned my nose up at it when younger!
Not a fan of fermented stuff ( I know - it's great for your gut biome) but the Pesto and Alfredo tips are awesome. I've hit a bit of a plateau recently, so your suggestions will help me get back on track. 👍
Anything with Hemp causes me to have an allergic reaction like some do to peanuts....It took me a few times of eating it to figure out what was making me so sick. Every time I ate it my reaction was much more intense. Thank goodness we finally figured it out. Now we read ingredients for anything new that I try. I’m sure it’s wonderful if you’re not allergic to it but just an fyi....
Good info as always, thank you. I eat a lot of broccoli and it never occurred to me to try Alfredo sauce. I like melting bacon fat over the broccoli and salting to taste. Another big benefit of sauerkraut is that it's high in vitamin C. Kimchi can be tricky as there is a wide spectrum of quality. Like you I enjoy the very hot Kimchi. For whatever reason many lesser spiced Kimchi brands have an unpleasant aroma. Am a pesto newbie, but will definitely try it!
Great ideas!
Great idea, your thinking of me. Bought everything today but only had the Alfredo sauce with part of my dinner., tomorrow will be something different.
I love my wild caught salmon cooked in my air fryer. I use it mostly to make salmon salad with avocado ,olive oil mayonnaise ,Cucumber, red bell pepper ,celery ,pickles, pickles juice and too many spices to lust lol
Food tastes amazing now Im on a keto diet. Things I didnt like all that much, like kraut or ACV now taste so,delicious, Im almost addicted to them .Every meal is like , oh, my , god!
Thank you for sharing your info with us. I need to give up sugar and I love pesto sauce. Pesto goes great on zoodles as a substitute for pasta.
What are zoodles??
I learned some new things...thanks Becky
Thank you so much Becky
Nopales. Tender cactus. Great with eggs, low carb and just a little packs a ton of flavor.
I love pesto and Alfredo sauces, good ideas thank you!
Good to know! Thank you 😁👍
thank you so much for these creative suggestions!!!! very helpful
unfortunately, commercial sauerkraut has to have the fermentation killed before marketing it.
Edward Ingram oh good to know! thankfully my farmers market has some
I was never a fan of kraut, but this last st pat's, I got a wiff of it, and couldn't get enough. So I'll anecdotally agree with your assertion about expanded pallet due to no sugar.
So happy to know this because I love both Kimchee and Sauerkraut!
Yes I didn’t like Sauerkraut when I was younger but all the sudden I’ve got a craving for it
Pesto on my grilled Mahi Mahi was wonderful.
Thanks DR. Becky, another great video. I was heading for Type 2 diabetes and cut back on the majority of processed sugars while doing my best to also cut back on natural sugars and as you mention in the video our taste buds start to welcome other foods. I now enjoy fermented (not fermented in alcohol) foods and really enjoy fermented Sauerkraut and Cucumbers. When the cucumbers are finished I end up drinking the juice to improve my immune system to enhance my good gut bacteria. thanks again, have a nice day.
This was a great reminder for me! Have kimchi on hand but haven't used for a while. I couldn't find a product in Australia that has olive oil though, so made my own..SO much better than bought & cheaper too.
Made product is pesto not kimchi - left that off accidentally
A tasty use of hemp seeds is a tablespoon or two of them in the pit space on 1/2 an avocado. A little olive oil drizzle and it’s a tasty treat/meal.
There is an Organic probiotic raw brand called Wildbrine and it has no vinegar, which takes out the bitterness and it comes in Garlic flavored as well. I never was a fan of Kraut, until I tried this brand.
Will look for this..sounds great! Thank you
Great tips and ideas :)
Helpful as ever becky grazie Mille ciao ciao
Thank you 😊❤️ Dr Hottie 😍
I just love your videos. I love sauerkraut and make my own alfredo sauce. The sauce goes well on Spaghetti squash, brussel sprouts and shrimp. Thank you for your insights. Am doing the intermittent fasting - surprisingly I haven't had any cravings and I've been doing the diet for 10 days. Only lost 8lbs but I'm excited about how well I feel!
Me too.!
Pesto is also very good with fish!
I like your kimchi idea, definitely going to use this! Thank you.
if you are going to try saukraut i recommend trying bavarian saurkraut which most stores sell. milder bite
Thanks!
Dr. Becky... here is a suggestion. I have been on keto for 18 months and vow never to go back! My new go to for flavor is Chipotle peppers in adobo sauce. You can buy them in the ethnic food section or make your own. They are smoked jalapeño peppers in adobo sauce. Put them on top of a pork roast in your slow cooker. Put them on chicken. You will learn to love them. Low in carbs and I think they speed up your metabolism!!!
Sauerkraut is great! Love it! It's a wonderful probiotic! Sometimes I eat it as an entre. Or mix it in my sallad. I never heard of Alfredo sauce. 😅
I like your videos please make more videos about low carb foods and snacks
I was stationed in South Korea for 7 years, kimchi is awesome! Tastes so good and so good for you. Korean people know how to eat, that’s for sure!
Thank you.
good recipe at4:30 with broccoli and alfredo sauce ---and hemp seeds!
Its super easy to make your own kimchi and sauerkraut and its way better then store bought. I ordered a clay pot that's made for making this stuff off of amazon and make it myself all the time. Its supre cheap and super easy to do and you can make it as strong or weak as you prefer based on how long you let it ferment. Watch some youtube videos about it.
...good to know; I include or hide ‘hemp’ seeds in my protein shake; kinda easy to make homemade SK - you can control the salt; store bought SK can be very high in salt.
Amen to that I have trying to eat kimchee and sauerkraut and the ones I co.e across is very high in sodium. The amount eaten ia about a tablespoon or two and the sodium is high.
I love the news about alfredo sauce.
I really like your channel, and I do the keto diet. But my apologies, I won't eat sauerkraut. I've never been able to stomach it. Regular boiled cabbage I'll eat. But please keep the great videos coming!!!!
Informative as always Dr. Becky!! 💜
I make pesto myself for the whole family with only herbs, lemon and olive oil. Delicious even in cottage cheese with keto bread.
I often enjoy sauerkraut cooked with weenies for a quick lunch.
Pork Chops and sauerkraut... Chicken and Alfredo Sauce... I do a little hemp product before I eat...
Thank you
sauerkraut and mustard .... the perfect hot dog toppings!
yum! Ty!
Except for the fact that hot dogs just might be the most unhealthy thing you could eat
@@katiefaith5381 you can get healthier versions, like organic with no nitrates or nitrites
THANK YOU so much Dr Becky!! After losing over 100 lbs on KETO, I am nearing my goal, (20 pounds to go) so YES I need this information to upgrade and update my menu!!
I'm late to this, but it's important to eat kraft that is fermented and not pickled. Most canned or jarred Krauss are picked (and the canning process kills off any bacterial benefits). Check the cold case for fermented kraut!
What I came here to post: supermarket kraut has preservatives added, so dead bacteria. Supermarket kimchi is heat-canned, so equally dead bacteria. If you ferment your own (I do) eat it raw for the benefits. Fermenting your own is a bigger deal than purchasing at the store, but not hard; lots of info online.
Dan
It's kind of expensive but Bubbies saurkraut is my favorite. I eat a tablespoon or 2 before each meal .
Making sauerkraut is fun I find and sure not smelly and it tastes great. The good thing you can make it as you wish.
Zero Pasta is great and low-carb. Cheap, too!
Watch the ingredients on Kimchi, some are laced with sugar.
Make your own pesto, goes great with everything!
I make my own kraut. It's delicious and very easy! It's not THAT smelly or messy. It's much better than store bought kraut.
Can you tell me how I can do it. I bought it recently in Supermarket it was absolutely disappointing. Please
How?
Hemp seeds make my throat itch and swell, I use flax and chia though. Seems to work in most of my recipes
I have to stay away from a lot of salt like sour kraut etc but the pesto is a great idea to flavor foods. If you are only doing a small amount that would be good. I've shunned it in the past because it's so high in calories.
I saw your low carb video 2 years ago and lost 7kg and stayed in a IMC 23 since then. Thank you. Just a little doubt, sometime I ate carbs an doesn't gain weight?
Ty
Sauerkraut is excellent as a salad topper
