The Americanization of European Shopping

  • Everyone knows about the shopping experience in North America. The large, boxy building, usually dominated by a single massive corporation like Target, Walmart or CostCo. This building is located next to a large, busy road, or preferably, next to a highway exit, surrounded by a Pacific Ocean of parking.This phenomenon started after the second world War in North America, but unfortunately, it has spread to other parts of the world. In this video, we'll visit 2 American style suburban developments in my city of Prague, Czech Republic.

    I live near North Greenwich in London. It's a truly bizarre area. It's where they built the Millennium Dome which is now a shopping mall/concert hall, but it's surrounded by miles of car parks and a massive IKEA. When you take the bus to North Greenwich station, which is a connecting hub to the recently built Elizabeth Line, you spend about 5-10 minutes just driving through car parks and new luxury flat developments.
    I guess they thought it would be a popular area because of the Millennium Dome (there's an art walk that follows the dome around the peninsula on that part of the Thames), but because of all the 'grey space' it feels really unpleasant to be in. For example, getting off at the train station bus stop and walking to the art walk covers a very short distance but requires crossing a very unintuitive section of road that doesn't feel safe. I also can't understand why anyone would want to move to the area, aside from the transport connections, because it's full of construction sites, has no convenient supermarkets (aside from maybe in the shopping centre in the Dome?) and all the parks are bland and terraformed and surrounded by main roads.

    As a Praha Východ citizen, I am used to shopping in the Černý Most area, and in my opinion, it's kinda ok to shop at without a car. The incoming buses from the "general Vidlákov" region stop on both sides of the "highway that is a continuation of Náchodská", so getting to Hornbach is possible without taking the long pedestrian bridge from the metro / bus terminal. But getting back isn't as easy, since you do have to cross the big road, but it is still "o-k"... The CČM(Černý Most shopping centre) is way better, since it is only about a 380 m long walk with one crossing and no parking lot (you just have to withstand the Č. Most transit hub and surroundings, which can be pretty uncanny)
    And since the whole thing is ok from a pedestrians pov and it is about a 7km walk from my home, I sometimes walk one there or back, instead of taking the bus.(or bus + train)
    Even though, I don't shop there too often, since the Lidl next to the Na Kovárně stop is closer, and I dont have to walk 2-3 Km next to the moto-hell that is Náchodská / or it takes less time by bus. (But sadly I haven't convinced the rest of my family to not go for the weekly Lidl trip by Bus instead of car, but I am trying, and I have made at least a bit of progress)
    I'd like to hear your opinion on the Černý Most shopping area... Is it good, ok, or "tosidelasp*elnet**ole"(=Are u fing kidding me)...?

      I absolutely hate Černý Most mall, everything is so far from each other. It's like 5 minutes walk from metro, but then for example from main enter to cinema city, it's another like 500 m walk inside of mall, it's crazy. How car peole and people with no car are completely differet worlds can be nicely shown on example of Černý Most when I had some meeting with someone there and he was going there by car and we were not able to find each other because he was talking about some enterance for cars which I've never seen and these people totaly don't realize that I really don't know where is some enterance from garages, how am I supposed to know that he means this enterance? It's ridiculous. 😀 Car people will never tell you anything clearly that you are sure what they mean, they are always stucked in their reality.

But yeah it is true, I just haven't been there for about a month, so I have completely forgotten about how annoying it gets.. I mean, I do like to walk 25+ km distances, but not inside a shopping mall ( like I did when buying a freaking toothbrush, visiting 2 stores and getting 1500 steps just inside the mall... )

    Nice video, if only more people would think about how much space is wasted and could imagine that things could be built differently. Unfortunately, we keep making this mistake in the Czech Republic, for example, the new shopping centre Aventin in Jihlava (built during COVID).
    As a university student in Brno, I also noticed how terrible the accessibility of the Olympia shopping centre is for pedestrians/cyclists (one can say it is actually unreachable without using a car or bus), especially the Decathlon shop, which is separated from all the other shops by a highway and there is literally no way for a pedestrian to cross the highway...

    I think having shopping centres outside of the cities with parking lots makes sense. I don't live in a city and I'm grateful I don't have to drive into the city centre to get to those stores. I live in Slovenia, in the countryside. It's heavily urbanised and we do have public transport, but it's not time efficient and can't compete with cars. Students and retirees use public transport, everyone else who values their time drives cars. Ultimately I'm not against public transport, but it's certainly not for everyone. Ultimately, as a car driver I think parking lots and garages are a must have.

  • @davidp.3479
    @davidp.3479 Před 3 měsíci +2

    Great video. But I would like to add some points, not as criticism but rather just as addition and my point of view. You were right with the IKEA that it doesnt need such a huge parking space but I think the reason why the austrian one in Westbahnhof works is because it is in the city centre. That goes also with the Paládium. That is a shopping mall that many people use when they just pass by from work, tehy grab something and like half of the clients are tourists - without a car, moving mostly by public transport. So yea, it would be great to have that also in the city centre, but if you want to put these services in the suburbs I think going by car will still make much more sense. Thats the unfortunate nature of suburbs... :/ So I am not sure how this would work in the suburban areas like Zličín or Černý most or Chuchle. But I agree that the footprint of those buildings could be greatly reduced. OC Smíchov is a good example.

    • @TheTramly
      @TheTramly  Před 3 měsíci +1

      I agree that Palladium is probably impossible to build in the suburbs..
      But still, we could make some great transit oriented development in place of those seas of asphalt and concrete, shopping in suburbia doesn't have to be the way it is now

  • @gabrielebianchi8976
    @gabrielebianchi8976 Před 3 měsíci +2

    Great video!
    I still would like to add a couple of things that might be some food-for thought.
    I actually think it's not that bad as development: growing cities tend to grow and usually grow along main roads, but from the video it appears to me that that's what I call "Interstitial growth" and it's usually close to cities and I consider it a level of magnitude better than a standard mall in the middle of no where just because it happens that it's on a crossroad of two regional main roads.
    In the "interstitial growth" you have already a land that is criss-crossed by motorways and rail line junctions and the level of noise would be any way so high to make prohibitive to dedicate the area to residential use and too small for productive facilities.
    This type of development can be ancillary and accessible via public transport to an existing or future residential area.

    • @TheTramly
      @TheTramly  Před 3 měsíci +3

      Great insights!
      I mean, these developments along major roads are certainly better than building some mega-mall in the middle of nowhere, but it's still a shame that they promote more car use and general car-centrism..

      @@TheTramly Thanks, I find also curious the case of Lidl that targets people that don't have spare money to spend on expensive groceries however they expect them to come by car, which is in most cases, the second largest expense a family may have in their lifetime, apart from their own house.
      And by the way now it's literally hard to find a car below 20 000€ they are ridiculously depreciating too, few years ago my parents sold a 20 years old Toyota, fully functional and you would tell age of the car by the look, the official dealer did not even want to take it. We ended up selling it to a friend of mine, who has a used car dealer, for 200€.

    I don't have a car, so I don't see all these massive shopping malls next to highway, sometimes when I travel with someone in a car and I see some place after years, I am always shocked by what they built there, such monsters. 😀
    What really bothers me is that even shopping malls in cities (not next to highway) are totaly car centric and sometimes there is no even proper sidewalk so when you walk there, there is no way how to get there! You have to walk on road and at parking lot, it's totaly ridiculous, I think it should maybe even be illegal, some building norms should be installed to ban such desings because it's really not normal. Drivers are then angry that we block the way or jump in front of their cars, but what are we supposed to do? We still don't have teleportation unfortunately. 😀 Recently I visited a brand new Kaufland in Poděbrady, it's not far from train station, so I walked there and there is no way how to get there properly! You have to jump over cars, it's ridiculous.
    BTW, you have KFC in Velká Chuchle? In such place where literally nothing is there except horse racing place? 😀 I have to revisit it after years.
    These car-centric places should not be built in Prague, it's against our culture, these villagers who moved to Prague and politicians who moved here and developers and other naplaveniny are really damaging Prague by their planning, this is not natural in Prague and should not be natural. Unfortunately, I see growing trend of car-centrism in last years for some reason, I think it's directly connected to the fact hat more and more people from regions are moving to Prague and bring their car culture there.
    On other hand, Palladium mall in center is very crowded (sometimes that crowded that you can't really go there) and pretty overpriced, so that's why people go to those far away malls. But in such case, I would go to Chodov wich is also above metro station and there are definitely more of such well accecible malls not literally in historical center.

    • @TheTramly
      @TheTramly  Před 3 měsíci +2

      I don't have a car either (even though I have a drivers license), so yeah, the growing car centric trend annoys me too
      the growing car centrism trend is really shit for our cities, especially for those of us who can't or don't want to drive
      and yes, the naplaveniny and just general boomer politicians (i mean, the mayor, Bohuslav Svoboda is literally 80 years old!) love to bring their 3-ton child crusher 4000s to the city, that's for sure

      @@TheTramly I am generally disapointed by how everything is complicated to do here, it's not even about money, it's about "this part of road has different owner, so sidewalk ends here and it is how it is, we can't do anything with that" but is it really that impossible to do something with that? Maybe they just don't care, they used their grants to build some their little side walk or bike path, so they have done and don't care that it leads nowhere.
      Here in my littly city, they built a new nice sidewalk, how do you think it ended? People don't go to their garages and gargens anymore and they just let their cars on that sidewalk, I can't even tell you here how angry I am because of that, police should take all those cars and force them to pay for that, this is really not normal, they are that lazy, that they don't even properly park anymore, they just let it in front of their houses.
      What if there will be a fire? They will be yelling that firefighters didn't save their houses, but how when they can't even get there because of their cars? This is really bad trend, I don't know what is wrong with people. Or maybe something is wrong with me, I don't know. 😀
