  • Comparing Intelligent Octopus with the new OVO EV tariff Charge Anytime.
    Summary
Peak hours/household Vs Off peak/ car and average price per kWh
    100%/0% - IO 41p OVO 33.5p
    75%/25% - IO 32.6p OVO 27.6p
    60%/40% - IO 27.6p OVO 24.1p
    50%/50% - IO 24.25p OVO 21.75p
    40%/60% - IO 20.9p OVO 19.4p
    25%/75% - IO 15.9p OVO 15.9p
    15%/85% - IO 12.5p OVO 13.5p
    0%/100% - IO 7.5p OVO 10p
My own split is 50% off peak hours, 50% peak hours. But not all of those off peak hours go to the car, some get used for dishwashing, background house use (wifi, router, TV, heating controls, security system etc) so I shouldn’t compare directly. 50/50 off peak hours is about 60% household 40% car.
Therefore in my own case I average 24p kWh on either tariff.
My calculations suggest that if you use around half or more of your electricity consumption in off peak hours with Intelligent Octopus then stay put.
If you use much less than half in off peak hours, then OVO could save you money compared to Intelligent Octopus.
If you have a non EV tariff but you have a compatible smart meter and car or charger then OVO Charge Anytime is cheaper than a non EV, standard tariff.
Don’t forget to consider gas prices, standing charges, regional pricing, contract length, exit fees and possible future price changes.
At 34p per kWh and 2.7 miles per kWh my Audi costs 12.6 pence per mile in energy.
At 7.5p per kWh it’s only 2.8 pence per mile
At 40 mpg a large diesel performance SUV would cost 17.5 pence per mile in fuel.

IO works best for me as we have an air source heat pump and battery storage. In April filling the battery off peak meant we averaged 12.22p per kWh. We have solar and a zappi so OVO isn't an option for us anyway

As a Skoda driver (just guessing) you can have OVO, but by shifting so much of your electric consumption from the grid into off peak hours with the tactical use of your solar and battery, IO is clearly the better option for you.

I'v been on Octopus GO for nearly a year now. My conundrum however is what to do when my tariff ends in August. If I change to OI It will cost me the price of a new charger, quoted at £1000. The IO tariff for me, at this time, is 7.5p / kWh. If i stick to OG its 9.5p/kWh at this time with no charge as I don't need a dedicated charger. i have a relitively large PV array at 10kWh and battery storage at 90kWh so I dont use any "on peak" electricity. I am a large user though at 17 MWh/year. Enjoyed the comparison with OVO. Thank you!

Take a look at Octopus Flux, it might suit you well given your large solar and storage capacity. Hard to justify a new charger to save 2p kWh but maybe your car is compatible so you can keep the existing charger. OI pricing is changing from 1st July.

Not necessarily. Depends on your usage and how much you draw from the grid peak vs off peak hours. But usually with Solar io will work out best, especially if you have a home battery. I’m not sure if you can combine IO or OVO with solar export payments. Take a look at Octopus Flux.

I agree, get batteries and get on Go, Zappi charger, in the summer top your batteries up overnight if it's not going to be good weather and charge car during the day.

We have found we can't use IO because of the car & charger we have (MG ZS & a BP charger) both are 'smart' and remotely controllable but don't work with IO, however after hours of calculations we are changing to the Octopus Go tariff as we will still be £1000 a year better off. Our current supplier (OVO) after 2 online chats & 3 phone calls, (one with over 2 hours on hold!) the best suggestions they could come up with were either replace the charger with an indra or ohme charger, neither options available untethered with models they accept or the even better suggestion, REPLACE the car! this being a car that is less than 3 weeks old... I wouldn't recommend anyone to use OVO.

My understanding is that I do not need a home charger with IO or Ovo - I intend to charge using a Type 2 charging cable into a domestic socket with a 3 pin plug (metal cased socket and consumer unit checked by a qualified electrician). I only travel appx 5,000 miles per year (retired) so I guess you would say the 'off peak' advantage is seconday to what I consume during the day (running 3 x televisions, 3 x computers, electric cooking and an occasional blast on the air conditioner when it's unbearably hot). The intelligent tariff is 40.10p per kWh (daytime) compared to 32p on their ordinary daytime tariff. Ovo on the other hand is 33p per kWh and I can charge at any time of the day. They claim "Add Charge Anytime to your plan for free and drive from just 3p a mile1 when you smart charge your EV from your home charging point" Can anyone confirm that the best option for me is OVO? Thank you

If your car is on their list www.ovoenergy.com/electric-cars/charge-anytime-cars-and-chargers then you can use OVO without having an Ohme or Indra charger.
As you don’t do many miles it’s highly unlikely that you’ll use half of your electricity in the cheap off peak period with IO (unless you have solar/home battery) so I think OVO would be your best option out of the two.

@ski_tron2446 I cannot thank you enough for taking the time to express your opinion. As a result I will switch to Ovo and once connected will apply via 'Offers & Upgrades) for their 'Charge Anytime' plan, which apparently it takes 4 to 6 weeks to set up!

@@johncoote5134 Yes indeed you can plug in but that doesn't mean the car starts charging - Ovo reserve the right to adjust actual charging in the light of wholesale rates etc. This seems reasonable to me but the term "anytime" may be misplaced. You simply set the time by which you need the car to be charged by.
