- I have played with the 1000 hp number and north of it and found its a very dangers number to shoot for on stock gen 4 internals. In this video I show you what has worked incredibly well for me on a budget. Stock pistons are not forgiving at high hp. Stock gen 4 rods are not much better. If you want to make and easy 1000 hp all day long and not worry about it on a moderate budget this is for you. Sure many have broke the 1000 hp mark on stock bottom ends but for how long. If anything leans out even a little your done. After trying that approach and finding the limits several times its not worth not spending a little more. I know haters will say its not needed. I would disagree if you want any hope of reliability. Stock blocks are very strong especially iron ones. I prefer the 6.0 just because it gives you the extra cubes to light turbos sooner for street use. 5.3 and 4.8 can still reach the 1000 hp limit without much more than 20-25 pounds of boost. Dude, ripping ring lands off is because of the increased thermal expansion from running hotter. The rings grow and will stick to the cylinder bore unless you open up the gap so gap your damn rings to a minimum of .020 for a 4" piston for a sub 1k hp build, go up to .025" up to 1500hp, after that your off in custom hardware and talk to your forged piston provider.

I think you are missing the point. You titled the video “Best budget 1000hp plus reliable LS engine build up!!!”. Yet, it’s not built, not making 1000 hp, reliability requires proof and most people use the word budget to mean cheap. That’s my point, get it now ?
Kenneth Jones it is built. What some deem on budget is up to them. It will make 1000 hp all day long. That said I don’t build 1000 hp ls engines without a 500 dollar set of rods and some decent 700 dollar pistons. To me this is cheap. Can it be done on a tighter budget, sure. Why don’t you consider forged rods and pistons “built”? I think most do. I’m in this motor about 2700 and I know it will safety make a 1000 hp daily. What am I missing here? Obviously you need to see a fresh video that is coming that will show this almost ready to run. I will drop a new vid in the next two weeks on this project.

I have daily driven a ring gapped stock bottom end 5.3 LS, with cam, springs and turbo for the past four years. It makes 600 hp on pump gas with a best number of 914 on race gas. I thought I was going to learn something from this video but was disappointed, that’s all.
Once you build it, dyno it and put it thru it’s paces for a while we can discuss economics.
Kenneth Jones If you are making 1000 hp why do you need to “learn something” from another 1000hp video 🤦🏻♂️ Maybe you need to learn power curves from various cubic inches vs peak numbers you prick.
I just got an 06 2500hd lq4 motor and am building it for 600-800 hp. Doing the entire engine but didn't want to spend $2000 on engine parts alone. But will be my daily driver also. Rods for 400 and pistons for over 600 was more than I wanted to spend for good parts. Your gonna have $3k or more in just that motor not counting what you gave for the block. WOW.

Thanks for the quality upload! Good info. I'm gonna be building a budget 5.3 on the side so I have it ready to go in once these 4.8's give up the ghost. Always been a fan of CP on all my 4cyl stuff since 2004. Will def look into those rods.. see them on all of Steve's vids. Subbed for sure.

I don't want to use turbos though, I'd rather keep it NA for reliability purposes. And my oil won't get corrupted and won't have to worry about proper startup and shutdown procedures
GM claims the LS3 heads have a 7.50 deck thickness so they should hold a thousand pretty easily.

So best "budget" LS setup... fully Build LS3 with aftermarket crank/rod/piston, running on meth injection? Hell no. 5.3 with stock crank, summit piston/rod, sloppy cam, PAC springs, cheap MLS gaskets and VS billet turbo
Yes that is all true, but to be able to reliably hold 1k HP or more on a daily driven heavy sleeper truck then yes, the shirt block does need to be built. I have the L20 4.8L in my 2011 Silverado extended cab and it will hold 800HP reliably, but anything more than that then yes it does need to be built.

@@ls4.8frank . Yeah that's true, I know a friend who owns a 1000hp civic and he pretty much build everything to the best he could just so he could drive it daily. However it is probably a lot more expensive for the ls engine

So u can run summit stock bore pistons and rods with the stock crank and u won’t have no issues and will u have to get it balanced?
Looks like ring gap issue to me but maybe u gaped rings idk. Ring gap is the biggest issue when boosting a stock LS engine. Iv saw stock lS making 1500 hp more than a few times on stock bottom. How long did they last idk couldn’t tell ya but ring gap is crucial. Cool build great video just sharing information not a know it all by all means lol!!

I've got a question for you. I run real close to the same combination as you, but for room I use small twins. I have 66s The hot side has 73/ 80 wheels with a. 91 ar. People tell me they will be to lazy for the street, what do you think.?

Would an aluminum block hold up with all the good internals with eagle crank good rods pistons and arp hardware.
it would for the most part. Its the sleeves that can crack on an aluminum build. As long as sleeves are not too thin you can do it.
If you can do it with a 5.3 or 6.0 then it can easily also be done with a 4.8L.

not true. I have broke ring lands without ends touching. Just weak pistons will break ring lands too. But yes that can do it but was not the case on this pistion

Summit also makes stock stroke forged cranks tested over 1200hp
Adding to much boost without gaping the rings correctly will brake the piston.

U didn't gap those rings. Don't blame the piston sloppy and Richard holder will prove u wrong . Jist another salesman business owner marking up prices

Did you ring gap the pistons before they went bad?
we did but possibly not enough. From what I have seen in the last couple of years is they can live if the tune is spot on. Not a lot of forgiveness though. I do have buddies running 8s in there foxbodies with all stock bottom end close to 1000 whp. So for some it works.

more info needed. whats the engine look like? what are the specs. how much boost you looking to run. Basic ls engines get close to 1000hp without a lot of trouble around 25-28 lbs given everything is right on.

@@Brainstangs thanks! I forgot I posted this. I finally figured it out. I think it’s cool to see someone like Steve using such a lower priced rod and proving that some times you really are just paying more for a name. It’s cool to see him put them to the test so we don’t have to! It really seems that most of all the h beams come from the same foundries.

The ring land breaks because of ring gap you are clueless Bro the rings have to be filed and gapped as much as .035 so they don’t close the gap and touch and lift the ring landing and break the piston like you showed in this video
Clueless. Yep. I admit it was a ring gap issue. I do now think they touched. If your running .035 gap your clueless. Way too much. I run 1300 hp on .026 4.030 bore
E85 and gap the rings more.. problem solved

I use 24 thousands on boosted ls stuff with 4 inch bores or approximately.006 x bore
Bro your piston broke beacuse you did not gap it right. Like look at the piston broke at the ring land... MY MAN... Thats your fault as a builder not the engines parts. Top ring needed more gap. If you argue that you dont know what your doing and are giving bad advice.
I’m not arguing that. I do believe the rings touched. And I will also say no pistons ring land will live without enough gap. Forged or not.
