Are Modern Utility Kilts Actually Good for Scottish Culture?

- So no…we here at USA Kilts don’t really like camouflage-pattern utility kilts. And we kinda take a “meh” view of utility kilts in general. Though we do think they are fine for modern fashion and some rugged circumstances like hiking, we do not consider them at all traditional.
However, our guest Shaun gave us some food for thought. Is it possible that even by simply EXISTING these man skirts actually boost interest in, or respect for, Scottish culture?

My very first kilt was a utility kilt in Multicam camo. When I bought it, I hadn't yet done the genealogy research to know what clans my family was related to, and didn't know which tartan to buy. At the time I wasn't sure if wearing a tartan from a non-related clan was even acceptable. So, in the absence that information, I chose Multicam for my first kilt, which is the camo pattern of the Army (kind of). I figured until I did my genealogy, the camo that I wore in my uniform along with all my brothers and sisters that I serve with WAS the tartan of the clan that I felt I most closely belonged to. It had nothing to do with being a redneck (which I am), and had everything to do with my clan.
Bought my son's first kilt from you guys and gave it to him for Christmas. He loves it. Now I need to get him a sporan. The customer service you is top notch
I really like Utility kilts and have several that I wear. They may not be as showy as a tartan but for cool, comfortable, casual or work wear in the summer heat (yes, we do get hot summer weather in England) they cant be beaten.
I don't know how a channel based on kilts has 26k subs but it popped up in my recommendations and I clicked it so I guess they win.
I have a Marine Desert Digi kilt that I wore in Iraq 2006/7
in my own opinion as a scottish man born and bred in Glasgow, I personally wouldnt wear a camo/utility kilt it just doesnt sit right with me but if you do want to wear one then feel free its just not exactly scottish culture.
EDIT: I dont mean the sense of culture as in like dont wear a kilt that isnt traditional feel free by all means i wont be offended, I repsect that your acknowledging the country I'm from and you get an A+ for putting it on no matter the colour
I am in Idaho. I am a serial kilter. I may or may not be named Joe Blow.
Jonathon Davis from Korn was actually one of the first times I saw a kilt worn outside of traditional dress and got interested in wearing one
Love seeing Shaun on your show, especially wearing an American Dream tartan and love the Aran sweater too! I do wear utility kilts for working in my woodshop in the warmer weather and doing yard chores. I despise pockets though. When I had stuff in them it made sitting weird. I like the Utilikilts Mocker for that reason and only rarely put anything in those pockets either. I usually wear a sporran with my Utilikilts. I also like that the Utilikilts construction includes a modesty feature. When one is getting into odd positions it's nice to not have to worry about flashing the neighbors (regardless of underwear choices)!
You can also combine the traditional with the modern and wear a tartan utility kilt. I have two of them as well as two traditional kilts. I wear all of them depending on the occasion and my mood but I doubt I’d wear a camo kilt.
I grew up in the Pacific Northwest and Utilikilts are almost like cultural dress here. Now as someone who spend winter months in Scotland I can attest locals love it when you show their culture respect and wear a kilt. Always has warmed up a cold reception. I only wish Utilikilts made something more weather resistant instead of cotton canvas.
I do agree with you guys, but I have found that as a Celtic rock drummer who smokes a pipe, the pockets have come in very handy at gigs. Phone, keys, drum key/parts, pipe, lighter and tamper, etc is a hard bunch of stuff to squeeze into a sporran.
I have two camo kilts but there are almost entirely for playing paintball in. I have worn them on a couple of hikes and when working in the shop but never as out in public apparel.
Lol.....I'm not " Joe Blow," but I am from Idaho. I did wear my USA Kilt when I was in Scotland: once at the supper meal at Inverlochy Castle and to tour Stirling Castle and go to the Stirling Highland Games.
Love my Utilikilt, especially for gigs. Would like to try a plaid but have never found a clan connection to point me to a particular tartan.
Camo is my favorite color! So yes, I have a couple of camo print utility kilts. To me, the Utility kilt is an American thing; the same way you don't get the "feels" for Utility Kilts I do, because I see them as American and not traditional (or from somewhere else). I wear a kilt daily and 4 days out of 7 it's a Utility kilt. Don't get me wrong, I love my Tartan kilts from USA Kilts, but I also love the Utility kilt! The camo kilts are great for hunting and hanging out at the fire when outdoors, that's where they fit in best for me. The big problem with camo kilts is there isn't really a high quality kilt in camo print; most are 60/40 poly/cotton and they just don't last as long. And I don't have anything close to OCD, so there's that...
I've often wondered the reaction I might get if I wore one of my Utilikilts in Scotland
+USAKiltsOfficial *Thanks for the manufacturer perspective on lowers.* Utility kilts have their place on the job, but camouflage NOT recommended.
I have a utility kilt. They are very comfortable and casual (a great substitute for shorts when going to the grocery store) and I don't need to get all dressed up with sporran and kilt pin and sgian-dubh. Not to mention people still recognize it as a kilt which is what matters
If I’m doing yardwork, I’m gonna wear appropriate clothing. Old hard wearing jeans that I wouldn’t wear any other time, overalls. It’s like I wouldn’t wear slacks doing yardwork or a suit at the beach. The appropriate outfit for the appropriate occasion.
What about summer weather like 30 to 40*C (75 to 104F ) and higher ? Also whats the recommendation for kilts for office wear (office varies from semi casual to semi-formal depending on who is around) ?
Woodland cammo DNKE tac kilt is my camping kilt.
SHAUN! SHAUN IS IN THE HOUSE! I like tradition. I have clan tartans. But, I have toyed with the idea of a camo utility kilt to where hunting.
I think a camo kilt would be the definition of a Hunting Tartan!
I wear utility kilts to work everyday because I need the pocket storage for my job, traditional kilts on the weekends
Have both black but.kilt and camo .
Like them both
I have a 2 wool tartan utility kilts
What's your view on the firefighter duty kilt? For medical calls or station wear, not for active fire scenes, of course haha!
GREAT NEWS!!! i took a dna test deal and im part scottish too. yay!
I like the woodland camouflage.
I made several kilts for myself. I was wearing a NATO DPM camouflage kilt on the Isle of Skye. Nobody batted an eye, except for a group of English soldiers, at a fuel station. They didn't say anything, though they did stare.
I also made myself a light weight kilt, for running. (Traditional kilts are heavy!)
I also own, and was married in a traditional, Cornish National tartan kilt.
Do you! Don't give a shit about anyone who hasn't the courage to wear a kilt.
Jonathan Davis from Korn wears kilts on stage a lot
I've transitioned from utility kilts to tartan kilts for the most part, though I will still wear a utility if I'm hiking or hunting.
I do the same. I only wear my utility kilt of I'm hiking or doing yard work or something, otherwise I'm wearing my plaid
Yes, rarely wear my utility kilts, traditional kilt is more comfortable. And have worn a traditional kilt in Scotland and Europe. Kilted daily.
What about utility mixed with taran type kilts?
I have one of those. I will say I don't wear it as much as I thought I would as the mixed fabrics, along with the box pleats, make it hard to keep the pleats looking half decent.
Love the Wayne’s world drop in.
Shawn!!!!!
Some Scottish Lass on my FB kilt site, said Americans and Canadians that come to Scotland wearing kilts are immediately pegged as tourists and mocked. I've heard this many times now. I'd wear mine anyway, but it's too bad they are that closed-minded. I think they should be proud, but it's a crazy world.
What do you carry in your sporran?
What you would normally carry in your pockets .
Stuff and things. And always one coin for good luck
my personal believe is that it's not a kilt unless it's tartan; anything else is just a skirt.
I've never understood wearing camo as fashion in style type of clothes, and I'm from Michigan where I am surrounded by people in camo. To me camo is only functional, primarily for hunting when you need to blend into your surroundings.
I bet the band was Korn.
I know I'm just an old Scots stick in the mud, but utility kilts are to me a big no, and camo kilts... Well I think I'd rather wear a frock.
Many tartan kilts are excellent camo, and we wear a sporran with a kilt, so multi pockets are unnecessary.
A kilt is a kilt technically because it's pleated, but to me it's a kilt because it's Tartan and easily identifiable as a Scottish kilt. When I see a utility kilt I just think "why?" why in God's name would you do such a thing.
I don't wear Utilikilts. However, I understand that the founder wanted to develop a modern unbifurcated garment for men, but decided that there already was one (a kilt) that was good enough that it should be his template. Pockets are a modern convenience, and I understand why he (and 20th Century Kilts) include them. I'm not so fond of the look, but I understand the functional appeal. They hold more than a sporran does.
Most Americans have the (incorrect) belief that tartan kilts are only for Scots with a clan affiliation. Therefore, if they want to wear a kilt and have no Scottish heritage or clan affiliation, they're inclined to buy solid colored kilts that seem "less Scottish" to them. Utility kilts are a natural starting point for them.
I am not Scottish but only wear tartan kilts . I wear very inexpensive poly blend kilts for yard work and around the house and the same type at work . I only wear wool kilts in public and will change into them even to go to the grocery store . Not that anyone would notice the difference because a tartan kilt is a tartan kilt to most people .
Utility kilts is not for me. The aprons falling down between my legs while sitting down and always have to correct the under apron when standing up is irritating.
The aprons falling between my legs is something I consider a feature of my Utilikilts. I prefer it over a full-width apron, because it makes sitting down much less of a thing to be concerned about
What self-respecting Scotsman would wear a camo kilt? The entire point of wearing a kilt is to say to everyone around you "That's right, ye don' want to mess wi' me or Ai'll send ye to meet Jesus and let 'im sort ye oot."
Kilts were always camouflage to blend in with vegetation local to the clan location.
I HATE them. I like traditional and that’s just me.
Men making sure they have pockets on their kilts. 😂 Women want them and we are weirdos.
IMO, a utility kilt *without* the pockets would look a bit more normal. YMMV.
I think camo kilts are super tacky. Not against utility kilts, ( i own 2), but camo is ugly.
