    Not knowing the details on the inset kilt involved, I might look at ironing the kilt from the inside using an iron setting and technique appropriate for the inner fabric, then flipping the kilt over and ironing again from the outside, making sure the inside pleats are straight, and use an iron setting that is closer to the correct setting for the outer fabric. However if, for example, the inside pleats are a pre-shrunk flannel and the outside was made with a basic cotton twill that then shrank when washed for the first time, you may just be boned.

    I've got a hybrid utility kilt (navy w/Johnston tartan inlets) custom made from "Scottish Kilt" in New York and it's great. They make them to order based on your various measurements and do a really nice job. No, it's not the quality of my kilt I had custom made from Hector Russell in Edinburgh, but it was a tiny fraction of the price. Definitely worth checking out.

    My brother (who knows very little about kilts) just got me a kilt in this style for my birthday. I do like it, the tartan part is Irish Heritage and our surname is Irish, and it's coincidentally the same colors as my college, so that's pretty cool. That said, the production is not impressive to someone who knows anything about textiles. I hope I can keep it in decent shape since I do like the look and it's a gift, but I don't have the highest of hopes on that score.

    if it helps, do not iron the utility kilts, use a steamer it should solve the problem.

    The fabric is usually quite light and cheap, but I just wear them while walking around town. I'm not going to work it one, or do anything major. Here in Philadelphia our summers can get as hot as 100°F. A thick high quality Kilt is just too warm for that kind of heat.

    I don't have direct experience with Verillas, but I know someone who's working with them. I suspect their hybrid kilts are of better quality w/ acrylic wool inserts. If I were to get one I would definitely dry-clean/press only. I don't trust myself enough with an iron to even try it.

  • @AggroPhene
    @AggroPhene Před 3 lety

    the hems at the bottom of plackets make the pleats lay badly, cut those off or have them selvaged, might still be like mine and there is no taper (tube with pleats) so they fit poorly anyway.

    Would it be good to go the old fashioned way - wear full kilt but with a separate leather belt that has long hanging strips/straps. Not actually sown together. Separate but together.

    • @OldNavajoTricks
      @OldNavajoTricks Před 3 lety +1

      Yeah, a separate cover/fronted belt made from a nice thick (4-6mm leather) basically gives you an accessory for all your kilts rather than the "Oh, I won't wear that fronted one to xyz event/function..." and not getting as much wear from a particular kilt.
      Whilst I was typing that I was mentally designing in a slim sleeve/pocket to the item as well, may as well have function as well as form right?

  • @Chaotic_Pixie

    I don't understand why wool inset kilts wouldn't be possible. They'd need different construction techniques but women have been making gored skirts and pleated skirts and gored skirts with pleats for decades. A color inset is just a gore that you're doing a pleat over. It would require patterning and more cutting and sewing... but your kilts are lined so that shouldn't matter. You guys could totally make a color inset wool kilt.

    Ok, I've been stupid and not watched for your response for the past 7 months... Honestly, I never thought I'd get a response. I am pretty certain (99.9%) that this is a "Made in Pakistan" unit. The pleats look like "simple" pleats, nothing fancy. and the "tartan" material appears to be applique'd onto the "canvas" material in the pleats. Looking from the inside, there is no plaid visible, it's all black "canvas" material. There is NO label on the darn thing (should have been a HUGE red flag). No fabric shrinkage that I can tell, no box pleats. Yes, I bought it at faire. I DID intend to get a "cheap" kilt when I left for the faire, so it wasn't an "impulse buy", per se, but there wasn't a lot of "shopping" and research that went into it. But yes, the fact that the guy manning the kilt booth was somewhat free with his flask did have some impact on my decision. The cost of the kilt didn't take food off my table, and it was about what I'd expected, but I was hoping that I could get beyond wearing it a few times and the first cleaning. So, I'm going to try the press cloth on the inside of the kilt, first, then back to the outside and possibly save the creases in pleats.
