fashion can be bought. style is possessed. i have 2 tartan kilts that hardly get any use, but i do have a casual kilt. it's plain khaki, looks good with anything, and when i wear it its almost never noticed. it works.

So. Much. This! No doubt Eric would know a bit about the 'dark side' from his typical dark-leaning palette - thank you for thoughtfully considering Goth subculture and giving some splendid (*chef's kiss*) looks and solid advice. I'd only add that a pair of shiny tall Docs or combat boots would finish off the look with panache (though perhaps not for the St. Andrew's dinner). Perfect timing as we'll be kilting it at a Goth wedding for the full Hunter's Moon this weekend!

I'm a metalhead with a bit of goth background, and I pretty much live in utility kilts when I'm not attached to a motorcycle. I also enjoy a steampunk aesthetic. I've also put a bunch of money into some 18th-century styled clothing. My everyday is usually a t-shirt, Utilikilt, and my TCX Hero motorcycle boots (although I'm expecting a pair of Son of Sandlar pirate boots to arrive soon, and those will hopefully see relatively frequent wear). With shorter boots in warm-enough weather, I'll usually wear tall socks but scrunch them down at the top of the boots. Colder days, the socks are worn "up". Typically I'll wear a hoodie or a Carhartt jacket over my shirt if that makes sense with the weather.
For events/more costumey stuff, I do have a black Jacobite shirt (that I bought from USA Kilts, actually), which sometimes gets worn on its own, other times with an 18th-century style waistcoat and frock coat for more of a pirate look with some other accessories. I've been looking for another shorter vest/waistcoat that suits my aesthetic preferences for more everyday wear, though, and in that instance I'm looking for something more sort of renfaire/high-fantasy in its look.
Also, a bonus: I don't really have much Scottish blood, but there is a fair amount of Cornish history on my mom's side of the family, and other than the Cornish tartans that are out there, the "traditional" kilt color for Cornwall is black

Use tartan for your medal ribbons. No nation does that! Should give you a really cool and unique look!
I have friends in Medieval reenactment, who turn up in great kilts…

I haven't ordered a kilt yet, but very soon; mostly because I have watched tons of your videos and have become comfortable with the idea; plus saving up the funds. I will give my two cents worth regarding military medals. My service spans three decades from 1982 to 2011 and includes four years of Navy and 25 years of Army. When I have seen people wearing actual military medals or ribbons that I recognize, I have never asked them if they have earned them. But then again, I have never witnessed anyone trying to benefit from them like begging for money or getting a free meal. Its usually just a costume during Halloween or something along those lines. I am not offended in the least. I have seen videos of "stolen valor" where there are people committing fraud, but never seen it in person. I earned 27 different medals, ribbons, and badges; so if anyone should be in the "offended" group, I believe I would belong there. At a costume party, that individual veteran should've just realized the context and used it as a situation to be friendly to someone and start a conversation. Like point out what each one he has earned and talk about it. Most people would think that's pretty cool.

And then there's stuff like- SAMS. where wearing your ribbons is encouraged and has a bit of a code to it.

Honestly, alot of the stolen valor confronters are just being assholes mainly because if they are not benefiting from it then it is freedom of expression not stolen valor. Is is bad taste, sure, but not illegal. I do not tend to call people on it as I did my 4 in the USMC so dont know jack shit about the army or others.

Tell me about the vest and jacket behind Eric about :38 into the segment. I like that. I think it is less "dressy" but still appropriate for many day-to-day events. Maybe an episode with an assortment of vests and jackets for different situations?
As an aside, I have learned that my lineage began in Scotland and then two generations in Ireland before coming to the US. Thoughts on County Antrim "ochre??" kilt and jacket? Maybe a bit bright for wearing for often. ???m

Spirit of Glyndwr red! Like it. And was that Spirit of Glyndwr black for the steam punk? Its a cool tartan.
I would have it for my solo bagpiping but I'm not sure how black dominated tartans sit with a traditional pipers tweed set.

I LOVE that tartan (obviously). I think it could work fine with charcoal tweed. And frankly it could be really sharp for an evening gig (or maaaaybe a funeral).

+USAKiltsOfficial *Thanks for the stylist perspective.* Both the Casual and Semi-Traditional in polyester viscose can pack the Glyndwr (Wales, GBR) sett; the wool Five-Yard is available in Black Isle, a shadow sett: Ye can complete the coordinate with black Lewis hose and garter ties, a short black vest, and gray shirt with black Windsor. Steampunk and Dieselpunk are amenable to Semi-Traditionals and Five-Yards in Weathered with Kilkenny jacket and vest.

My job is reselling donated jewelry online and it is always so nerve-wracking getting military medals and figuring out which ones are OK to sell.

    • @joecitizen6046
      @joecitizen6046 Před 8 měsíci

As a veteran of 29 years service, when someone is inquisitive about medals, I look at it as a great conversation piece. When getting donated medals, just research what each one is about, ask questions, and let it be known what it is. The only medals I wouldn't wear or sell as a costume piece, as far as American medals go, is the Purple Heart and CMH. Anyone who is offended by any other medals probably didn't earn one either and just jealous. He should be asking if they know what each one is so that the ribbon or medal has even more "cool" value to the wearer. As long as the wearer isn't trying to beg for money or get a free meal from them. Peace.

I believe Mr. Jet is being cheeky. He is however missing the old joke seen on many a t-shirt "If you're so Goth where were you when we sacked Rome?" Anyway, yes, Goth is rooted most early in Romantic period 'gothic' literature, music and the dark aesthetics of the late 18th early 19th C.
