  • A step-by-step art tutorial for painting amazing motorcycle helmets - from prep to clearcoating! Follow me on Insty: / fieldey and sign-up to my MadSkillz MasterClub newsletter: www.fieldey.com/madskillz-mast... and get ready to take your art to the next level!
    Ever wanted to paint a motorcycle helmet but been afraid to try? This is your first step in your helmet painting journey! Because of safety concerns there are a few things to watch out for when painting helmets and we will be covering them at the start of the tutorial.
    Once the scary safety stuff is out of the way, I will be covering the basics of helmet painting, including preparation and degreasing, base painting right through to clear coating the final helmet.
    This helmet was kindly donated for me to paint by Elsebie from Piki Piki Overland Blog... she asked me for a "cute Day of the Dead skull and some flowers" and ended up with something altogether stranger which has been turning heads and capturing smiles all around Colombia.

    Just found this channel and I am stoked. I really liked the placement of the skull. The curves of the helmet, when it comes to those cheek bones, just give the composition a solid punch.

    Seemingly very simple artwork but really well done and eye-catching, indeed! I have seen others use spray paint instead of brush and acrylic paint but I think hand brushed acrylic paint seems way more unique and interesting!

    Arai states on their website, under the FAQ section that they allow owners to paint their helmets. They list a number of precautions and so long as they are followed, those whom choose to do so can without fear of voiding the warranty.

    This was really helpful! I have to paint a friends helmet and they want mountains. I have cheap acrylics that I usually use on canvases. Would that work? They're artist loft acrylics or would I need to go out and buy different paint?

    I have been jonesing to see this for ages. That turned out awesome and I'd love to give it a try to some mountain biking and cycling helmets some time... when I'm a better painter! Great safety pointers at the beginning too. Thanks for being a source of inspiration to pick up my brushes and keep trying. I'm so glad to have found you :)
    If the helmet is a different colour, would you sand and base coat it with gesso or similar first?

    • @FieldeyTV
      @FieldeyTV  Před 6 lety

      Thank you very much! Glad you liked the tute when I finally got around to making it ;)
      For a different coloured helmet I'd be really careful with sanding it down - it might compromise the shell... it would have to be a really light sanding followed by a prep base coat.

      I think you may be able to put a varnish or sealant over the paint, but there is a possibility that the varnish/sealant could damage the helmet

    I have one doubt, if i need to draw only on one particular part, does i have to sand the whole surface of helmet and also after painting, does i need to apply clear coat on the whole helmet or is it ok to apply the clear coat on the printed area only...
    Your reply will be very helpful..
    And will it with stand the weather conditions...

    • @thomas.thomas
      @thomas.thomas Před 4 lety +1

      you sand down the parts where you apply the paint because on rought areas the paint stays better onto it and you only need to aply clear coat to the parts which need protection, which are only the painted ones. A good coat should make the paint weather resistent but as far as i know the sun can affect some paints and their colors

    • @FieldeyTV
      @FieldeyTV  Před 3 lety

      Thanks for the reply Thomas! I did that paint job about 3 years ago and Elsibe uses that helmet every day and it's still going strong - so I think you'll be fine with the weather conditions. :)

    • @FieldeyTV
      @FieldeyTV  Před 6 lety

      Hi Jason, this was a matte-finish helmet so I just gave it a very light sanding to make sure it was scuffed enough for the paint to stick to.

    • @jasonjares1936
      @jasonjares1936 Před 6 lety

      I meant over the finished paint. I've airbrushed helmets, but never used a natural brush. Does it leave a raised texture?
