How I Finally Got Into the POWER POCKET! Improving My Game!

- After 3 and a half years I finally realized I have never gotten into the power pocket. Without doing that, my power AND my accuracy have suffered. Working systematically and intentionally it finally clicked and I am on the road to throwing better.

Thank you for the video. As a lefty, I do really experience stuggle while I see demos of righty throwers explaining it so I am super happy that you are a lefty. And also you take the time and effort to put this videos and tons of others into here, thank you for making these coaching videos! I really like them!
Yeah, us lefties gotta stick together! Glad you like it! Hopefully, more backhand improvements coming soon!
Dude,…. Extremely helpful! Mostly because I’m a lefty as well and I believe this was the very first time I’ve seen this from a lefty! So thanks!
Love your videos!, especially getting the power pocket into a disc golf throw!
Not only did I record myself and realize I was not getting the disc into the power pocket, but I applied your method of practicing and saw a big improvement. Going to keep working on it and recording myself this weekend.
Awesome! So glad it helped! Keep grinding. Progress comes with work.
This is so great, thanks for the shout out! Breaking it down super slowly in the step by step way like this is so helpful for me. I'll be practicing this asap. Excited to see the progress and let you know!
Also echo the suggestion for going to Power Disc Golf Academy! I've progressed so much over one month just throwing into a net. Uli is amazing!
It's fun to get to help each other out. More fun when folks interact with my content! 😁
I will work on this. Thank you for breaking it down!!!!!
You're quite welcome. Thanks for watching!
Excellent breakdown. Thanks for the video.
Thanks!
All it would take is a bird's eye view camera shooting straight down. You can easily trace the line the disc takes.
Yeah I need to get me a drone... :)
Great breakdown video 👍
Thank you. I need to do an updated version of this one soon!
Same problem. I'll try this one out, thanks
About your age and took up disk golf late last year. On the same journey as you with a similar analytical approach. Look forward to following your progress and insite. Peace from canada
I'm really enjoying connecting with people this way. Let me know if there's anything you want to see. We Ams struggle with very similar things.
@discsmd will do, also a lefty and I wonder if that leads to taking a very analytical approach. Lol...enjoy
Great stuff! Thank you
I have an alternate method that might help you get an even better pocket. I think the real root of the problem isn't that you dont have the natural biomechanics to do it, but it's that you are throwing with early shoulder rotation. Try shifting your weight back and forth with your shoulders closed and your throwing arm dangling loosely. You'll notice that when you brace, the arm will keep moving forward because it's own inertia carries it forward. Now if you keep the arm hanging loosely from the shoulder but bend the elbow like a normal throw, bracing will cause the arm to shoot way ahead and snap out very quickly. Hope this made sense
I admit timing is a big problem with me. I think a coach would greatly benefit me. 😁
@@discsmd I think timing is probably everyone's biggest problem lol. This Tristan Tanner video was the one that opened my eyes to this line of thinking czcams.com/video/x1t7Vv6BMwI/video.html
The key thing to note is how he describes the arm feeling like it's way ahead of the shoulders. When I get throws feeling like this I get 450'+
I agree with the comment!
Right on dude. I wasted my time with this video. Cheers!
You mentioned that your game has already improved. I'm curious in what way has it improved? For instance, are you getting the same distance with much less effort? Maybe getting the same distance but with more accuracy?
My next video coming out tomorrow addresses this momentarily. I am actually finding I am more accurate now. But also I am starting to see similar distance with less than 100% effort.
First time finding your channel. Subscribed! Respectfully I would like to add an observation and comment. My understanding is that your forearm ( elbow to shoulder) remains in a 90 degree orientation and even at release point it’s very close to 90 degrees. It seems that you are demonstrating the” lawn mower pull” where your shoulders stop in line with your target and the arm continues through. I had to watch several slow mo videos of the pros throwing to understand this concept. Am I missing something? Ill be watching more of your content for sure. For reference im a lefty also and have been playing competitively for forty years.
Wow! Forty years! I'm honored by your subscription! And you aren't wrong. Admittedly my arm path still needs work. It's actually what I am starting to work on now with DG Spin Doctor. Stay tuned. 😁
I found that in my case, my body automatically wants to do things that are wrong, and getting it to correct these things has been difficult, because I got good at doing those things. I would always round, the elbow drops, my throwing shoulder is up the entire time.
The thing about the straight line theory is that it's more of a general direction, and not a specific. It goes back to one place in the peak of the backswing, and in the direction you want to throw in the swing to the moment of release. But mechanically, since your shoulders and arms rotate and move in space over time, so you end up with 2 different arcs. The out-to-in arc, and then the in-to-out arc. And this is not easily trained. What I've done is similar to you. Train the first arc, train the second arc. Accept it as a complex movement, but get the positions right.
I'm still working on this myself, but over the last year I've been able to correct a bit. FYI I'm currently in the Scott Stokely Method, and that's helped me get over some hurdles. Plus the class has been fun. Keep up the great work!
I've watched a bunch of Stokley's stuff. Some.of what I do is from him. Backhand is so complex I have to break it into pieces to get it right for sure. Gonna take a while to get it but I'm determined...lol
@@discsmd Yeah it's definitely a process!
GOOD STUFF I would love to learn with YA !!!
Awesome! Let's go!
sir i tend to tilt the disc uPWARDS in my powerpocket so you it will be kinda flat agianst my chest, how do i change this sir
So are you saying you have a pretty extreme hyzer through the pocket? I like to use thumb pressure on the top of the disc to help me keep it more flat. Also, I'm just making sure my wrist is neutral and "turning the key" as I extend to the hit. Hope that helps!
recorded myself for first time yesterday cant believe it bcuz i hit 400 on a rope consistently but i was not only swooping with the disc but i also am getting my elbow outside of the power pocket.. silver lining this means once i get this lined up ill be throwing 500ft on a rope drives
Recording yourself is the golden ticket. It's the way I improved my game the fastest.
4:37 your back swing is you using your arm .. thats not right.. its TWISTING with waist and shoulders and you move away from disc .. the disc should be in a square and NOT LEAVE IT .. when you use your arm your are moving the disc the disc doesnt move you move away from the disc and the KNEE twist initiates the shoulder to uncoil and that naturally gets you in power pocket THEN you what Lizotte describes as "break glass with elbow" which its a fast light motion not a heavy tense motion
Yeah I've done what you said for years, and never got into the power pocket. The point of this video is that I have to train my arm to get to the correct positions first. Then when I go full speed, and do what you are saying, my arm instinctively gets to where it needs to be without thinking about it.
Okie is right. When you fully plant your hips turn and your body goes into the pocket. If it's not your issue is most likely that you've dropped your elbow like in the clip you freeze framed. Watch dg spin doctor he has a video on it that makes it super clear. You are teaching your body muscle memory that is wrong and wasting energy.
@@timeandspacevintage3380 you're not wrong.
i wonder if were reaching out too much vs more straight back and yes i know you cant reach straight back bcuz you will round but i wonder if were reaching out toooooo much to compensate for not rounding etc.
I'm sure you can, but at full.speed I've recorded myself and have tried to over exaggerate my reaching "out" on my back swing and it is NEVER as far our as I think it is...lol
This is a decent technique of learning and building proper form but you idea of a power pocket is off. Your disc needs to be at the front pectoral not the rear. The elbow needs to be straight at the target.
The reason is your arm needs to whip and when you drive the elbow fully forward, with a relaxed wrist, there is additional whipping action.
Spot on assessment for sure. Watch my.later videos. I'm getting there!

Couldnt be more wrong. What you are describing is what they call flipping the club in ball golf. That's where you rotate everything back to where it started on the downswing and then release the arm.
That's not what you want to do. You don't want to feel the release from the arm. You want to actually continue to open the chest, until the arms release in your own.
From baseball players to ball golfers you'll never see their chest facing forward af the their arm extended like this.
If your posture is correct and you have side bend on your right side for a lefty, this will create a limitation in the range of motion of the torso. That way the torso wouldn't open up too much. if you don't have any side bend your torso will open too much every time.
czcams.com/video/ekaJVLroLfQ/video.html
He demonstrates it being wrong within the first minute.
That would be valid if hitting a golf ball or throwing a baseball were.like throwing a disc. The trajectory of a golf ball and baseball is perpendicular to your body. The trajectory of a disc is an arc. Slow down any pro disc golfer, their release isn't straight in front of them. Overthrow, Mike Strauss, and other disc golf coaches would probably agree with me here. I probably didn't explain it the best but the point I am making is that I could definitely be more wrong...lol.
@@discsmd yeah, my coach, Andrew Wheeler, who trained Paul Mcbeth told me this. I wish I could send images cause I'd embarrass you. It is extended in front of them, the upper body is just rotated open. What's your Instagram? I'll school ya
@@samhowl1152 No need to get disrespectful. My Instagram is in the description. Thanks for stopping by.
3:19 this video sort of disputes Oerthrow and Slingshot and this guy is on tour for many years so who's right? czcams.com/video/yrLCZfxdFwo/video.html
I love a lot of Scotts stuff but there are some things I tend to differ with him on. I know I can't come straight behind me or it makes me round. I follow the Overthrow and Sling Shot methods when it comes to arm path.
@@discsmd You don't have to think about the arm path, like, at all. All you have to do is to brace and swing, just like Scott says. It might be necessary to drill the arm path so that you learn to become relaxed. But after you brace correctly, you can just swing the relaxed arm towards the target. If it is loose enough, the disc will come in and out of the chest while your body rotates with the brace. But the elbow must stay out, there is no way around it. If you tense the scapula and shoulder, the elbow pulls in and you have to rotate open quickly to compansate this. Brace and swig, make it simple!
@@dgspindoctor like I said I know I have a lot to work on. I like to analyze stuff, probably to my detriment. I'll try what you say for sure.
@@discsmd We all have a lot to work on, and trust me as I say there are not many who analyzed more than I. I went to similar path I guess, seeing everything and thinking that I must control all the movements of the body, and that the pros have to control everything, too. Truth is, they don't. Relax and let the body take over :)
@@dgspindoctor I shot you an IG DM. Let me know what you think.
In your reach back you are already collapsing your shoulder. Also your phone number is super visible on your disc.
Crap, gotta pay attention to the details...
All of youtube has your phone number now 🤔. Don't worry, I won't use it for evil! (As in not at all this I'd just a heads up)
Yeah, been warned...lol. Gotta be more careful in the future for sure.
