Taurus GX4XL Review | Something Went WRONG

  • Unfortunately this trip to the range wasn’t rainbows and unicorns…our Taurus GX4XL had some issues or an issue. Come see what occurred!
    Outside of the issues, the TAURUS GX4 XL is a great shooting, feeling and handling micro compact pistol. It shoots flat, has a good flat faced trigger, two magazines, steel sights, slide serrations and about everything someone would need to carry whether is inside the waist band ( IWB ) or outside the waistband (OWB).
    It appears it is light striking primers and it’s a gun related issue. The pistol will be headed back to Taurus for service and hopefully a quick turn around to get it fixed and a new follow up review made.

    It was unfortunate seeing the issues as it wasn’t a problem for the GX4 we reviewed in the past, so hopefully it’s minor and back quickly!

    Could not tell you about the Gx4XL, but can say without any hesitation my GX4 has been totally flawless with all kinds of mixed ammo and not up to over 4,000 rds. I have many firearms, shoot weekly and have been for years. I am sure the issue on your XL is most likely a simple fix. Could be new and the striker channel has something in it. Clean or replace the Striker channel now with the Lakeline and I would be that would fix the issue.
    As you know, any firearm made in this universe can have a issue. I have seen issues in most guns at some point. Thanks for the review, and please follow up on the fix.
    PS One owner on the Taurus forum had the same issue, and it was the plastic striker guide. A new one fixed it and he also ordered the Lakeline.

    Always good info. It's frustrating seeing people "argue" around their firearm being unreliable. A lot of people will make any excuse they can to keep owning/shooting a gun instead of getting it fixed or replaced. Good stuff to see. I don't know anything about Taurus as a company, but I assume they'll sort you out. I wonder if a tiny portion of the firing pin snapped off? Just enough to still strike and set off "most" rounds? Weird.

    • @HuntFishShootChannel
      @HuntFishShootChannel  Před rokem +2

      That was the weird part, is that it would work for a mag then stop or not fire like 10 rounds consecutively. Issues happen, shoot enough guns and see it more, kinda how it goes. It’s already in Taurus’ CS department at this point so hopefully a quick turn around! Look for a follow up review!

    My regular GX4 has been great .. zero problems
    But I wonder if the RSA is the same that was designed for the regular sized GX4 ? That extra weight of the slide could make a difference…
    I usually break in my 9mm with 124gr NATO …and use Mobil 1 as a lube … my practice for 20 + years … my buddy had a Kahr CW9 that was still giving him grief after 250 + rounds… of 115gr practice ammo .. after 100 rounds of NATO and being lubed up with Mobil 1 it ran like a champ .. still does to this day
    Break in is done on all my pistols…

      @leetinder2314 Před rokem

      I have a lot of interest in the Reflex as well. And I've always liked (can't say loved, some of their previous grip textures were hand graters that needed to be taped.) FN pistols. I spend most of my life as a hammer shooter, then got into strikers.
      The flex is an internal hammer. So even tho it's supposed to be a good trigger, if there's a hammer in there... if I'm gonna have to pull the length of that hammer for trigger travel, why don't I get the benefit of being able to manually drop or cock it??
      I'm already planning to get the Gx4, unless I decide I really can't deal with just 13+1. Might go for the slide kit, if I hear more about them fixing that issue with it not firing.
      The Flex? I wanna wait til more places get it, and I can try before buy. (rent one).

I like glocks but the g43x grip is rediculous to consider it equal carry to other small carry, its basically a g19 length grip otherwise I like the G43x a lot if they just made the grip shorter I'd go that route.I don't trust the Mossberg MC2sc for again you risk a higher bad QC rate like Taurus at that price point.

      P365 is actually one of the worst as it has an oversized mag on all 3 of their capacity options. And it even loses to old year 2000s compact pistols once you start comparing 15 rounders.

It works fine in 2 out of the 3 but the 3rd will not consistently fire the same ammo without FTFs and FTEs . If you send this back to Taurus. They test it with different ammo. Hey HFS, matter of fact the claim of "Glock compatible sights" is untrue and I hope you can address that in the next video!! I'm struggling with it right now, set of Glock TruGlo Tritium Pro sights, the shaved out recess in the top of the slide where you tighten the screw down, it's too small for a Glock front sight tool to cinch down the hex head Glock screw. There's no way to actually tighten it, so a big waste on my part. Check it out next to a Glock slide!

    • @HuntFishShootChannel
      @HuntFishShootChannel  Před rokem

    I would just say that it was a shame that the Taurus Service Department was tied up for such a probably very simple problem. We buy Taurus firearms at drastically less cost than the competition. I feel some obligation to do at least what I can as far as an initial investigation. It really robbed you of a learning experience. It doesn't feel fair to treat Taurus the same way that I would a company that sells their pistol for $600. It keeps the pike open for someone who has a serious problem. Hope you decide differently in the future. At least measure the length of the cases that misfired. If they were shorter, well? How many other brands did you try? Not everyone has the same standards of ethics, but this is very aggravating that no effort was made even to determine for certain that the problem is the gun. At this point there are so many basic things about the gun and the ammo you didn't bother to check that, well it's just a shame.

    • @HuntFishShootChannel
      @HuntFishShootChannel  Před 5 měsíci

      We mentioned on two occasions how we tried multiple different brands of ammo during the review and then we sent it back to Taurus after this review and it was repaired by Taurus. It had a faulty striker which they replaced.
      I don’t care if a pistol costs 300 dollars or 2000 dollars, if it’s marketed as a defensive pistol, they all get the same treatment. If the pistol or brand can’t live up to a fair standard, then it will be shown in the review.
      We gave this pistol a fair review and even made several positive comments about it during the review, however it came flawed from the factory. We reviewed the GX4 non XL from Taurus and it did great, but even that pistol had malfunctions which generally speaking, for all the guns we review, is very rare.

    • @glennycarroll
      @glennycarroll Před 5 měsíci

      A faulty striker takes what? 5 minutes to replace? And for that the gun had to be shipped across the country twice, take up valuable time in the service department, and what have you learned about how the system of the gun operates? A friend had a S&W 917 split where the barrel screws into the frame, a 22 LR! Now that got sent back to the factory! But little minor repairs? Come on. Apply the Golden Rule.

    • @HuntFishShootChannel
      @HuntFishShootChannel  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Your comment is so irrational, I don’t even think it deserves a response but I’m feeling generous. It was a brand new pistol, it’s not my responsibility to repair it. If it was several years old, I would have repaired it. it wasn’t, it was faulty out of the box and we elected to have it sent back for WARRANTY service.
      A striker and firing pin assembly in most pistols is a very easy replacement and it does only take about five minutes. However, let’s say there was a larger issue at hand? Or I need the parts, which I’m certainly not paying for on a new pistol. Then on top of all this, you void the warranty on guns when you perform service work on them and are not a licensed or trained armorer for that company.
      My final point is this, you buy a brand new truck from a dealership and you drive 1 week and maybe 100 miles. The truck breaks down and will not drive down the road in a usable manner, what do you do? Do you fix it with the parts you don’t have or do you take advantage of the warranty you paid for or the peace of mind a warranty brings when you bought the truck?
      Your rationale is flawed. All of us here at this channel are very mechanically inclined human beings, I won’t be fixing any broken pistols out of the box, unless it’s a life or death situation.

      @@HuntFishShootChannelthe guy appears to be a Taurus fan. I don’t care if the run is $270-$300. If it is marketed as a CCW gun, it needs to perform reliably out of the box.

    Taurus is in the same class as Keltec, Skyy & HiPoint to me. The cheapest guns I recommend are Canik. Or save up for a Glock, Sig, CZ, etc. 🙄

      I would have to agree! The previous GX4 was great for us, this one not so much. We shall see how they fix it, it’s at Taurus now!

      Add PSA junk to that list too

      Sig is crap as far as their poly guns go. M&P Glock and XD and hellcat are the only real choices

      Sig is not crap, that’s a subjective opinion. Tons of great options out there though

      I have Taurus pistols but strictly as range toys. My PT92, TX22 Compact and 856 revolver have all been exceptional.
      The PT92 was made with actual beretta tooling and actually engineered better IMO w/ their frame mounted safety.
      And the TX22 is hands down the best Poly framed .22 Ive seen on the market. Seriously, the most reliable.
      Thats about where my love affair with Taurus ends lol. I know people like the G series but I would and could NOT trust my life to those when a glock is $200 bucks more🤷🏽‍♂️

    I don’t come out and rip rounds thru a new pistol. Puts in 13 round mag and commences to rip rounds thru the new pistol 😂

      Difference between a “mag dump” and me shooting faster than the average shooter.
