I see a lot of good criticisms in the comments, but one main one you guys are missing is this: they totally messed up Jack.
Jack isn't ACTUALLY a total idiot who just survives through sheer luck. He's a guy who does crazy things that seem like they never could work, but then do. *He's a genius pretending to be an idiot, not an idiot pretending to be a genius.*

he manages to trick several people into believing him, he does the impossible by planning it out (seen especially in On Stranger Tides) and is just a smart person in general
To be fair, robbing the bank by yoinking the bank remain a genius idea, maybe Jack just got better at covering up his genius over the years. He was also even more "busted" than in previous movies.

The saddest part of this film which did make me have sterrings with a tear, was seeing Hector 'Barbossa' sacrificing his life to save his treasure

The problem is that in part 2 its revealed that Jack acquired the compass from Tia Dalma by barter, so this contradicts previously existing Canon.
I think they changed it so he did the bartering but his captain took the compass, then when he died he gave it to Jack.
That's a huge motive why this film sucks... but isn't just this, not having Gore Verbinski really fucked up with the 2 last ones... without him, this series has no chance...
I liked part 5. At least they finally had a nice looking girl. As much as I like this franchise, the first 2 left something to be desired. I think John Marshal did fine taking over. He also did Underworld part 3 and did fine with that.

Not really, pirates are commonly known for mutiny and betrayal in movies and real life. they crew could laugh and be cool and all but at the end of the day they are there to gain something in return not just follow someone around just for loyalty.

As much as I love the intro I’ve never understood why Will gets so concerned about the other crewmen knowing Henry is there. He’s the captain, I highly doubt any of the men would attack their captain’s son without an order from said captain.
I don't think he commanded the same fierceness and strength as Davy Jones did, and his crew might betray his wishes. Will they be punished? Yes. Does the threat of punishment keep people safe in the real world? Not always without fail.
William Turner was slowly growing scales and clams and oysters and all kind of ocean monstrosities onto him. He was turning, just like old Davy Jones did.
Only a matter of time until he went mad, trapped under the waves, imagine if Elizabeth wasn't there when he came back, he has to wait 10 years to find out you know . . . and he slowly looses his heart too or goes mad.
We see that Mutinys are common on all ships, and like Davy says.....Life is cruel, why should the afterlife be any different?
Also, Alestorm is a good pirate metal band

One could be that they mutiny, like the above-mentioned comment.
One could be that they have established rules that must be maintained via the flying dutchman's ship's curse.
One could be that they dont trust Will Turner to be a fierce pirate if he lets his child go.
One could be that there's doubt in the crew if Henry is found, such as lying about people being aboard the ship. "Why wouldn't he tell us about this, whats he hiding?"
I mean for real, it's a pirate ship and its the most fierce revered ship in all of the seas, I highly doubt there's no reason that Will wouldn't want to keep that from the crew finding out.
His son nearly died but Will saved him. Contradicting his purpose.

Jack is not an idiot, this movie makes him out to be stupid but he was always a brilliant person, he took calculated risks which he measured against his own abilities. He made his opponents underestimate him.

Once Jack was employed by Cutler Beckett and Captain one of his ships called "The Wicked Wench"....
Jack and Beckett had a falling out because Beckett got into slavery business, this disagreement resulted to the sinking of the Wicked Wench ..
That is how Jack met Davy Jones, they struck a bargain and Jones raised the Wicked Wench back from the depths and let Jack be a Captain for 13 years, Jack renamed his ship to what we know as "The Blackpearl"..
Also Tia Dalma aka Calypso is the one who gave Jack his compass ...
It doesn't. Jack was a pirate, then got kidnapped by rouge pirates and escaped, joining the eitc. In the flashback, he's 18, he worked for eitc his 20-25 years

@@carolpulma2734 Of course I care, Jack bartered the compass from Tia after his teenage adventures for a sack of gold at 16. Then he worked as a cartographer's apprentice. Looks like he started to miss the sea and joined a pirate crew. The joung jack from the book series is a MAGNET for trouble and I'm not surprised if the captain either confiscated it because he didn't trust it with a teen or was just greedy and took it. Anyways, it's obvious that Jack isn't much surprised by the compass upon recieving it back from the captain. The Pearl is the "last true pirate ship" and this scene explains why. 2 years later, Jack gets kidnapped by rouge pirates and taken on sea. He escapes and joins the eitc. 5 years later, he's climed the ranks and given a promotion by beckett, who bought the Wench (Pearl) probably from some merchants who bought it from the brethen because Jack dissapeared there was no captain.
I love tha fact that in first movie, Jack was saved by Will Turner at the end, and in this one he was saved by his son Henry, in the same situation.
I hate the beginning, with the cursed Flying Dutchman and Will Turner, he shouldn't BE cursed and the Dutchman should look normal because the only way for them to be cursed is if Will abandons his duty as ferryman to the afterlife. Which I'm sure Will wouldn't have done.
Not to mention Jack's crew so ready to abandon him, especially Gibbs!! Gibbs has been with Jack through thick and thin he wouldn't abandon him like that. Finally (minor point..) WHERE THE F*CK IN PINTEL AND RAGETTI?!?! Those two were awesome and I miss the homunculus and wooden-eyed weirdo... :(

I think the great disservice of this film is how it completely contradicts the entire previous established cannon and timeline. Jack serving the british, not becoming a pirate until after betraying Lock, already a captain of his own ship, how he got the compass from Calypso... everything. It honestly just feels like a film in an alternative universe.

All of his 'Giving Away' isn't betraying the compass. He 100% sure he would get the compass back because he thinks it through. Trading the compass for a booze IS betraying the compass because he literally giving away a compass and possibly wont get it ever again.

the pearl is such a majestic being, even when it is damaged greatly in battles, holes and hull broken, she always will seem new after the battle
Honestly there needs to be a movie based on Jack. Like a backstory. I don't think he's an idiot, he pulls things off that one would consider impossible.
Its more like he's a bored genius. That and i guess he has some insane luck, example the guillotine moment.
Having more focus on Jack is why more and more people hated the newer movies in the first place, Jack works better when he's not the central focus and is working alongside the main characters (how the first three movies operated with Will and Elizabeth). Pirates 4 having jack as the central focus and failed at it (in the ratings at least, I still don't know how that movie made $1 billion). Pirates 5 was more conventional, but it instead had a plethora of other issues instead that brought the movie down.

Genius's tend to be a bit eccentric. In this case jack is actually quite the lucky genius. I say lucky because there are certain parts that luck had a big roll in.

I know a lot of people don’t like this movie for many reasons, but I quite liked it.
Even though the flashback scene contradicts the fact that it was originally Tia Dalma who gave Jack his compass, it was by far the best scene in the entire movie! Jack was back to his original cunning self, not some constantly drunken goofball like he was the rest of the movie.
My headcanon is that Jack got the compass from Tía Dalma/Calypso on the behest of Captain Morgan (the pirate captain Jack was working for in the flashback). Once Morgan died, Jack became the owner of the compass.

The curses happened at another time ( when Elizabeth and Will were young) and therefore there were different navy officers
It's possible that there was change in management and the new officers just forgot about Davy Jones and other myths altogether

I'll say this: watching this clip from scenes of the movie really makes me look at Jack as the most cartoonish real-life character on-screen. Scenes that make no sense at all, but it totally works for the Pirates franchise. I love it. 😁

would not recommend this at all sadly. They messed up jack's character by making him seem like a blundering idiot when in reality he was a skilled fighter, who could think in a battle like no one else and was really charming and funny.

This movie has one MASSIVELY GLARING plot hole... will turners son was doing it to set his father free from his "curse" but will turner doesn't have a heart because it was cut out and placed in the box and put in the safe keeping of Elizabeth so the moment his son "broke the curse" wouldn't Will fall over dead because he literally has no heart

One? Try several. Jack's Ship, Jack's Compass, how did the son know where the Dutchman was? Why was Will becoming "part of the ship" that curse only happens if he's not ferrying souls to the afterlife. When did Will have time to have a son? Why does giving the compass away break the seal on the Triangle? How come Jack's captain giving it to him didn't do the same thing? If the Flying Dutchman was supposed to protect the seas for Calypso, why didn't they fight off the Triangle gang? If the ruby was the key to the island, how did Barbossa get it in the first place? What does breaking all the curses at sea even mean? Is Calypso dead now? Can they go to the Isla Del Muerte and have a ton of gold and treasure? Why did it take Jack 10 years to figure out how to get the Pearl out? Why were they hunting the girl down as a witch, when Barbossa went to meet an actual literal witch with no issue? How did they know which island to go to at the end to meet up with Will? How come that island they randomly shipwrecked on after getting chased by the sharks happened to have a family of people with personal beef with Jack? Endless plot holes.

Jack Sparrow grows up with 2 generations spaning 5 movies series since 2003. Thus, without JD, there will be no more Pirates of Carribean as we know it today.
At the start of Pirates of Carribean The Curse of Black Pearl, nobody had expected this movies of pirates genre would make it to box office let alone successful franchise series as now. All previous swashbuckler pirate movies before it when bust or only fit for tv movie screening. It was admittedly due to JD's Jack Sparrow that has made POC what it is today.
I really wanted the Flying Dutchman to face off against the Silent Mary.
watching Johnny Depp here is like having a nostalgia and imagining pirates of the Caribbean getting rebooted, I think cannot tolerate watching it.... :(

They aren't supposed to look like that. Clear plot hole unless Turner isn't doing his job.
According to Tia Dalma, they look like that because Davy Jones twisted his job. His job was to ferry people who died at sea over, which he did. But he started to actually attack ships and kill the crew on purpose to bring them over. So even though he did his job, he twisted it and so they began to deform physically as well. At least I'm pretty sure this is right
He wasnt doing his job though, he had to take an unofficial "tea break" to stop his son drowning. Probably why the crew are annoyed and why first thing Will says is "LOOK AT ME" and begs him to stop.
If it was davy jones he would have let the kid drown but thats Wills son so hes breaking the rules.
