One of the things I love about this Harley, is her relationship with Joker, ngl is still toxic. But originally the Joker doesn't jump to the chemicals for her, she is the only one who jumps.
And he goes through all this trouble to get her. They made him actually care about her.
I don't really share your opinion because her not being able to swim and him saving her does show that he somewhat cares about her, but it also shows how she is reliant on him. So this basically just demonstrates that she is (as her jacket states) "property of the Joker"

I have heard there was a depiction where he did actually care for her, though he did think love was a weakness, others find Harley "home away from home", so honestly it depends on the depiction whether he does actually care or not, or he does actually care but tries to get rid of her because he thinks love is a weakness, it's very confusing
The only reason I like Jared Letto as the joker is purely from this dynamic alone. All other forms of Harley Quinn and the Joker are just super toxic. This one, as you pointed out, is still toxic, but its a step towards a caring relationship. Harley is bad ass, and I hate how she lets Joker walk all over her. I would honestly love to see a Harley Quinn and the Joker movie that obviously has a good plot, but focuses on their relationship and romance, instead of a pile of toxicity, 2 people who care for each other. But alas, that is not them.
If there’s one word that can describe Maggot, it’s is “perfect”.

She was definitely the best part of this movie. Hands down. Margot Robbie is an amazing actress.
Edit: 3 years later and I still wonder what this movie would have been like before they literally changed everything. Originally it was suppose to be much much darker and less cheesy, but Warner Bros apparently made them change almost the entire film. I read interviews saying they kept a therapist on set to make sure the actors were mentally okay during the first version. I feel like the changes created the subpar film we got, instead of a good, dark gritty story like it was originally written to be.

In some dark twisted way, the joker hold some affection for Harley. Or else he wouldn't have saved her twice. Not trying to romanticize their relationship or anything, but there are some underlying emotions that are seeping out.
Her performance is amazing. She captures the innocence and vulnerability of the character perfectly. She never seems stupid. It's horrendous how James Gunn wrote her in The Suicide Squad. He turned her into a dumb blonde joke cliche out of a bad sitcom.
Clearly never saw his version of Suicide Squad. Starro is way better than the Enchantress.
James Gunn wrote Harley more comic accurate and perfect in The Suicide Squad. I prefer her in that movie more than this one. Even though Margot still did an excellent job in this film as well
He literally wrote her as a more mature version of herself which makes 10x more sense. In this movie Batman is already years after Jason Todd was killed and well into his 40s. That means there should be many years between Harleen becoming Harley and this yet she still acts like a child who hasn’t grown at all since the Joker broke her brain. In The Suicide Squad she’s even more insane and in a way that befits her character as opposed to in this movie where her ‘insanity’ is 95% stupidity. But she’s also shown character growth despite her insanity. This version of Harley literally does nothing better except for wearing fewer clothes

And there was absolutely no realistic depiction of "insanity" to her at all. The David Ayer Suicide Squad's Harley actually feels like a broken, lost soul, a person that has a realistic emotional texture to her, that's led her naturally to the desperate situation she's in. She feels like a full-blooded movie character, not a one-dimensional cartoon caricature. I spit on James Gunn for how he absolutely destroyed Ayer's beautiful translation of Harley to the big screen and turned her into something completely worthless and forgettable. Gunn should be embarrassed and ashamed of what he turned Harley into.

It's cool how she really evolved that character from the the 2 suicide squads and she really perfected it in Birds of Prey. Say what you will about that movie. Robbie's performance from the dialogue, accent, and physical comedy to the amazingly performed gymnastic and fight choreo that really felt pulled right from the cartoon which is where most people know the character from. That is where she really shines. Underrated movie.

I love how this movie shows how much of a badass she is, and that her backstory is really that she fell in love with the wrong guy. It’s his fault that she’s like this, if he hadn’t thrown her in chemicals, shocked her brain, and made her do such evil things. She’d be completely normal. This shows in the last scene where she was completely calm, and was just reading a good book and enjoying a nice expresso.
