HOW TO STOP SWINGING AT BAD PITCHES. In today's video Coach Justin from Ultimate Baseball Training will show you a few baseball hitting tips to help you stop swinging at bad pitches.
The good thing about swinging at bad pitches is at least youâre swinging the bat. Itâs much easier to put the brakes on a hitter who is aggressive vs. try to teach a hitter to have an aggressive mentality.
The problem is, if youâre swinging at bad pitches that arenât strikes, youâre putting yourself at a disadvantage. Youâre probably finding yourself getting into more two-strike counts and making weaker contact.
Keep a good âyes, yes, noâ approach and if itâs a good pitch, hammer it! The key is to try to have aggressive patience.
That being said, the first thing that will really help you stop swinging at bad pitches is having an understanding of how pitches start and how they finish.
In other words, understanding how different pitches move. If a curveball starts at your front hip and looks like itâs hanging, itâs going to break for a strike. If it starts as a low strike, itâs going to keep breaking even lower until it eventually breaks out of the zone. A 4-seam fastball is a straighter pitch, etc.
Another tip is to have your coaches mix it up in BP, soft toss, and front toss - occasionally throwing bad pitches that you have to take and also throwing different pitches, not just fastballs.
Another great way to stop swinging at bad pitches is to work on hitting in different counts in practice. Have your coach/teammate give you a situation. When youâre in âhitters counts,â be more selective and wait for your pitch. When youâre behind in the count, you have to open up your zone and be more aggressive.
Lastly, many times the result of swinging at bad pitches is poor pitch recognition. If youâre having trouble seeing the ball and picking up pitches, make sure youâre using a soft to hard focus. Try to minimize head movement as much as possible. - Sport

I have a good eye until i get to two strikes. Then itâs like i lose my whole approach and donât know a strike from a ball.

Great video! I found it helpful to have a yes on release point approach. This makes me look fastball and more susceptible to a breaking pitch though. How long should you let the ball travel before you make your decision to swing at a breaking ball?

My son is 9 and keeps backing out and watching strikes go across the plate. Ie he seems scared of the ball. How can I get him to not be afraid. For some reason heâs more afraid than a year ago. Maybe because the pitches are a little faster? But still they arenât that fast, even if he got hit it wouldnât hurt much

I love to get into 2-0 counts and swing at bad pitches because I get into the swing no matter what mentality instead of look for something in and crush the ball

I recognize the curveballs that break fro strikes but i freeze or miss them badly. Sadly I cant see the breaking balls that are going to be balls and swing like tiger woods at them. UGHHHHH

Three balls no strikes, the coach tells the kid not to swing. Am I alone in thinking If the Kid at bat has demonstrated good plate discipline he should look for a cookie and do some damage!!!???
With my coach it's all up to the batter and the situation. Some guys have 3-0 greenlights but others dont.
