Your awesome buddy! Thank you for sharing this video. I love retracts and smaller models and you did a great job!
What masterful craftsmanship!
I just bought the same fw190 kit and have the same intention in mind and this video gives some good ideas on how to approach it.
Wow, I would never have thought this video would make it to 50,000 views.
It is my first ever video on youtube. At the time I had the blues - building the FW-190 was part of the cure. Seeing this video go to 5,000 views in a matter of months helped further :). And 6 years later I still enjoy your interest - thank you all very much!
Hello Friendlymaendi !
Really nice build you have there, I'm currently building my own ,Guillows SBD-3 Dauntless.
I wanted to ask, what cables did you use to connect your servos to the control surfaces please? and if you're interested, you can follow my build blog at fpvlab.com/forums/showthread.php?49868-SBD-4-Scale-FPV-Build-Project
Thank you Nathaniel, and congrats to your project! Cable is the 0.032 Cable-Type Gold-n-Rod, you find them here: sullivanproducts.com/GoldnRodMainFrame.htm
friendlymaendi - Great Video, like how You feathered the ailerons into the Main Wing! I grew up building these models when I was younger. Micro servos were just coming out in the Early 80s. Never dreamed tech would catch up with these wonderful kits!
You did OK until the music started. Not needed.
@RR67890 That's just the girls playing Disney Channel on the radio in the background. You got the true experience of the builder 😀. They are women now.
This is simply amazing. Well done sir.
Nice conversion. Nice rosewood Strat you've got there too! It's amazing just how many guitar playing aero modellers there are..
Like Roy Orbison 😎
„On December 6, 1988, he spent the day flying model airplanes with his bus driver and friend Benny Birchfield and ate dinner at Birchfield's home in Hendersonville (Birchfield was married to country star Jean Shepard). Later that day, Orbison died of a heart attack at the age of 52, at his mother's house.“
Beautiful workmanship!
Wow. Balancing them must be tough! I am in the process of building my first wood it with ambitions of making it RC! Great project and video.
LOL``O No! Mr. Bill!!``
@rythmsekshun It's the 0.032 Cable-Type Gold-n-Rod from Sullivan Products, for sale at e.g. Tower Hobbies.
I like this cable. Good stuff. One was enough for the whole plane.
That’s a awesome build
Great rc convertion,Im getting an ultra micro spitfire but I also like to do a big project,Im doing a project like yours, only with a guillows corsair f4u-4.
@earlyhemibill same as every other servo. It is slowed down by a circuit that you can buy e.g. at hobby lobby. You can see the circuit in the video, it sits right on top of the landing gear servo.
@6004billabong Look at the closeup shots, there are some small pieces of Golden Tube at either end and in the first rib of the aileron. Some piano wire for the axle. The aileron was covered first, then the wing was covered up to one rib past the aileron, then I put in the piano wire across the tube connecting that rib to the one next to the aileron, glued the end of the piano wire to the rib then finished covering. The aileron rotates around the center of the radius at its front end.
Very nice!
gorgeous
Great video; I really want to do this with a Guillows kit.
Thank you! It is very rewarding you will see. Have you checked out the RCgroups thread on Guillows conversions

?
I will check it out; Thanks!
@raffybphotos Flown on 3 different days so far without crash, still fine tuning thrust angles, wing alignment, prop choice etc., the maiden is described on the rcgroups thread (close call), the second day went well with about 6 landings, the 3rd was too windy and a lucky far away gear-up landing in the grass saved the bacon. Waiting for a day without wind (not too frequent in Chicago) when I have time (even rarer) to realize my vision of a video with gear-up low passes, ROG take off, etc.
What retracst are they make? link? Spectacular job mate!
The area for The motor mount is aprox 2x2 cm im thinking about a greatplanes brushless rimfire 200 that wheits almost 10g
wow well made love the folding landing gears. did you have to cut elevators off the wings?
Hi Jin! Thank you. Yes, the kit does not foresee to make these remote controlled. Everyone develops their own strategy to add control surfaces. There is a great thread collecting Guillows builds on www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=827861 - you can go there and get inspired. Or the opposite: don't go there and follow your intuition. When I built the FW-109 I did the latter, wasn't yet aware of RCGroups or the many build videos on CZcams.
How did you mount the ailerons? Also have you covered the plane yet if so how did you do it with the servos and rods. Nice job I'm working on a stuka
@raffybphotos there is a video of a flight now posted on my youtube channel.
@rurikia Hi, they are pre-cut pieces, except the sticks. And it does come with paper, but I covered with iron-on heat shrink stuff. Google Guillow and you'll find the company website and this Kit.
Do you have a close up of your motor mount? I am planning to convert a model of the Spirit of St Louis as I build it, and am not sure how to mount the electric motor.
+firebird8600 you can see it at 2:26 - a bit creative but it has held up well. Tacked it first, checked position, then reinforced it, then cut (dremeled) off excess. Good luck with the Spirit of St Louis.
Stephen Following. Me too
@raffybphotos If your question is, is this a well flying kit, I'd say go for it, she is much more benevolent than I expected. That said, no guarantee that I'll manage to produce said video before she goes, but that's due entirely to my lacking skills, not her.
@MrSBChevy see also my Guillows 406 Electric conversion thread on rcgroups, hobby-lobby Article number: ALF6001
how did you make the landing gear
Hey bud, what retracts did you end up using? I’m looking to do the Guillows ‘s 502 and I’m looking for a general direction
@RinTinCan The area for The motor mount is almost 2x2 and im thinking about a greatplanes rimfire outrunner rimfire 200 aré you agree?
What voltage are you running on the landing gear servo?
Hi im converting a guillows b-25 what motor doyou recomend
Hi there I was wondering is it possible to make retractable landing gear using the micro servos from a umx line of aircraft to drive the retracts because I’m currently conversion on a guillows few-190 kit 502 and using the electronics from the umx timber mainly the brick receiver and a different motor but in a 2S setup could you please give me some advice on how to make them please it would be a big help thanks
Senserly jarred
Hi Jarred. Yes, I think that will work well. With two separate servos for the retracts it will be easier to fine tune things.
Hey. I want to add rc control to my 1/16 zero, can you give me tips on the aileron and how to cut the part off so that it can be moved?
Hi Jacky. Check out the Guillows conversion thread on RC Groups. www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?827861-Guillow-s-Conversions-The-list-of-conversion-threads
cool
👍 Великолепно собранная модель!
Вадим Гопенков Thank you! Nice to hear from Russia. Were/are Guillows models a thing there?
friendlymaendi
Unfortunately in Russia there is no free sale. Modelers buy (order) in other countries.
Tell me where and how to buy models Guillows?
Есть в России. Нашел.
www.capitalhobbies.com/brands/guillows/
WHat are the retracts?
Homemade?
Indra
were did you get the Retracts from?
Do you still have the plans? If you have it digitalized can you please send it to me?
What is your material covering the fuselage? Im doing a balsa Spirit of St Louis and that silver-gray would be perfect. Nice job BTW
Thank you! I'm not sure this is still available. I bought it at the former Hobby Lobby, now Hobby Express. It was called Usaf Aluminum Superkote #HLC608.
yep. now you gotta go through all the pain of covering it with it all put together.
What you see is just a dry fit. Covering went fine. Check out 4:20.
But does she fly?
Retracts are unusual for such a small plane. Good job! Do you have a flight video?
Glen Kohler Thank you! There are a couple of flight videos on my Channel.
cool airplane sucky music
thats one hairy frame,,,, ehehehehe
