We need MAID Legalized I work in a nursing home and see this disease ravage people into nothingness ,to the point where they end up sitting in a chair, drooling, fed then changed then medicated then put to bed, the next day get up, eat, changed fed then more meds sitting and staring, over and over and over, the cycle repeats, this is cruel, families stop visiting, friends are long gone, empty shells
I could not disagree more strongly! He was very - VERY condescending! I went through this process, for almost eleven years! I'll tell you what my takeaway's were. Alzheimer's victims are treated like children. They are confused, and the first thing that gets stolen from them by clinicians is RESPECT. If you doubt what I'm saying, just visit a senior care center, and watch how the residents are talked to. Granted, most people in these centers are not medical professionals - they are, as we (family) concluded - underpaid butt wipers. This man - this Doctor (assuming) was in a unique position to discuss onset issues, yet he chose to speak to this couple like they were 5 years old. There is an excellent book that is available - it's called "The 36 Hour Day", and it's a living-and-breathing essay (care providers, family members, victims themselves, etc.) on brain disorders. The one takeaway I had that was immeasurably valuable was to LISTEN - not talk - to the sufferers. When my mom was in the 7th stage (there is no stage 8) my choice was to ask her questions, and to let her answer them - however she was able, even if she wasn't able. She mumbled, and she whispered, and her thoughts were disconnected, but I never interrupted her. The very last time I saw my mother smile was when she was trying to answer a question I asked her about ice-skating on the river as a young girl. I remembered the stories she used to tell me. She made no coherent responses, but she thought she was doing so, and I just listened to her. Why? Because her daily routine - every single day in that facility - was "How are you doing Maggie....? It's time for breakfast...." "Time for the bathroom, Maggie... you wanna go to the bathroom?" "Time for dinner, Maggie... let's get you over to the table...." Nobody EVER just sat with her and let her respond - other than me, and other family members. When you are confused, and nobody listens to you, that has to be the most frustrating and defeating circumstances that any person can endure. You are trying - desperately - to process what is going on around you, but people are just grabbing your arms, lifting you up, and taking you wherever the schedule dictates. I"m sure this Doctor is a decent man, but he's far too young to appreciate what I'm talking about. The loss of dignity - the lost of independence - the loss of interaction - - these are GIGANTIC issues! It would- in my opinion- be FAR better to tell someone with the onset of these diseases EXACTLY what can be expected. Let them process it the way YOU are processing these words - whether you agree or disagree. Don't talk to them like children.

My Mom is 92. Lived with me for the last 18 yrs. I’ve got to deal with this problem everyday, have for yrs. As a single retirement age man it’s a new adventure everyday just trying to find out what she wants/will eat. Unfortunately, almost always there’s only 1 in the family that takes care of the aged parent. I’ve got 1 sibling that don’t help at all and 1 that helps about twice a month for a few hours. But this is my Mom, she was always there for me. I promised my Dad I’d take care of her, and I will! 1 of these days, she’ll be gone. I never once felt unloved, with either parent! Still don’t! That’s the 1 thing Mom is still capable of, love!
It sounds to me like you are doing a great job.. your Mom has made it to 92 what more can be asked for.. my aunt has just died at 94 so there are really no more surprises in life... I doubt if I will live until that great age! Be grateful for every day that you have with her and I wish her the very best and you..
maria parker Thanks for the feedback. Not doing so great. There’s a huge amount of stress involved for a caretaker. Happily, my sister has become more involved, still part time, but better. I’ve had to employ someone to help. Moms mobility is extremely limited so an assisted living facility is out of the question. Trying to keep her at home. I’ve had to take off lots of time, I’m losing weight, 20 lbs, I don’t need to lose weight. My family is worried about me now. By God’s Grace I’m still healthy! My Moms mental state is rapidly degrading. We’re both in God’s hands now!

Alzheimer's is the cruelest of diseases. You die alone, even when your family and loved ones surround your death bed. You don't know or recognize them. They're strangers. I watched my dad die this way. I would rather die from the most painful cancerous death with my last vision being of my family at my side, than to die surrounded by strangers.
Actually, it isn't because you get to a point where you do not realize what is going on because your cognitive functions completely deteriorate. Diseases like Lou Gherrigs is FAR worse, because your body deteriorates and becomes completely immobile, but your cognitive functions stay intact the whole time!

Anti-theist I have 26 residents on my floor with Alzheimer’s. Only two can be combative occasionally, not even violent. And that’s only when they have to take a shower. (Many people with Alzheimer’s hate showers) and all except 5 can clothe, feed, and walk themselves. It’s not always what you see on Grey’s Anatomy. Most of my residents just won’t wake up one day.
Yes he is good and they do this to this level and better in the NHS. Also he uses medical jargon and needs to help then know what the plan is to help him and his wife cope. Tests won’t help practical things like memory diaries and colour markings.
I think she knew, she just never had definitively said that he had Alzheimer's before. Just saying the words is very emotional and signals a new stage in life.

I thought this was staged first but the wife crying seemed pretty real to me so I started wondering if these people consented to filming for the benefit of doctors and patients dealing with Alzheimer’s. Anyone know for sure? The fact that only first names are given for the actors of “Lydia” and “Sam” makes it seem like some sort of confidentiality that would imply it’s a legit delivery but I don’t know for sure. Either way, props to the doctor for wording that so tactfully. One of the most important qualities to have in this kind of field. You have to deliver a lot of bad news and you better know damn well how to make it the best. And not just beat around the bush. You have to be clear but word it as gently as possible without distorting the weight of the information you give.
I’d like to add, even if this video was scripted , this is the absolute correct way to treat human beings with such a diagnosis of a incurable disease. Respect and positive direction will help in a journey that can be so negative.

You can experience so many horrible things in a career span that the only way they can cope is to disconnect from empathy and emotions. This guy, staged or not at least KNOWS how he SHOULD be wording this stuff and I really appreciate that. It’s the first step to actually APPLYING what you know you should do. Very tactful and informative especially to people who are analytical and want a step by step of someone’s line of thinking of how they ended up at the conclusion.

It feels like an instructional video from a uni, but this is obliviously real and that Dr has a very good way with people. I have worked with a lot of doctors over the past couple of years and the majority have been fantastic people but only occasionally do you get a chap like this guy.
This Dr has such a great bedside manner explaining this incidious disease.As a Dementia support worker we have advanced in leaps and bounds , with support networks for both the patient and care giver.
My mom passed away last year because of Alzheimer's. Life is changed forever. Her father passed 20 years ago when they didnt have the meds that helped her get a few good years before she was gone. My heart still hurts that she saw in him what was going to happen to her. The sweetest and strongest woman I've ever known and was blessed to be her daughter. This video appears to be at least four years old and I just wonder what Sam's condition is presently. My husband was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and for two and half years I cared for him at home. He got so he could not stand and I could not physically lift him from his bed to his wheelchair and at that point he had to go into a hospital. He was there for 2 1/2 more years before he died in 2008. The first major flag I got that something was terribly wrong with him was when he asked me one day where we kept the cereal bowls. The cereal bowls had been kept in the exact same spot for over 20 years. Then he totally forgot how to use the microwave. One thing that gave me some comfort is that while his condition was devastating to me, it didn't seem to bother him much because he was not aware of how he was gradually losing more and more abilities and I was greatly comforted by the fact that in the five years from his diagnosis to his death, though he forgot many things, he never forgot who I was and he could always carry on a conversation with me and he maintained his sense of humor right up to the end. There is no cure for Alzheimer's but my husband was prescribed Aricept and Namenda which are thought to slow the progression somewhat. I do not know if it slowed the progression of Alzheimer's in my husband because I do not know what his condition would have been like if he had not been taking the medicine. As I watched this I thought that Lydia as Sam's caregiver is in for a long haul and I wonder how she is doing. This is a very sad disease both for the patient and the family. BTW, what a gentle and caring doctor Sam has. I was terribly impressed by the compassion he showed for both Sam and Lydia.

My dad had alzheimers. I took care of him. I cried every week because I knew when he looked into my eyes he had forgotten who his son was. The life he led. At least I know he's at peace now.

That’s exactly what I plan to do. My grandma got early onset Alzheimer’s at 55. If I’m unlucky too and get it through genes I will be peacefully ending my life I already talked about it with friends and family. Yes I am young as seen by my profile picture but I don’t want to be in that 1% of familial Alzheimer’s disease that is 99.99% guaranteed by deterministic genes of the faulty chromosome 21. Only 200 family lines have it and it’s usually super early like 30 years old. I am 23 now. I don’t care how anyone else feels about it since I was 14 I decided that. It’s my life and you are going to die anyway. My grandma suffered tremendously for no reason. It would have been better had she been gone I was so relieved when she had died she died with a smile on her face. It hurt her and our entire family and was a burden on everyone. So I will be ending my own life if that happens in a peaceful manner like taking a pill or carbon monoxide poisoning. Many people around where I live are religious and get mad saying you are disrupting “Gods” plan. I am an atheist. I don’t believe things were planned out and if there is a God that can control literally everything they wouldn’t have created such an awful disease and just sit their and watch people suffer good fucking people that don’t deserve this shit. When your dog or cat is sick and suffering you put it down you don’t watch it suffer for 20 years so you and spend money you don’t have and time the caregiver can never give back? Also what if you don’t have anyone to care for you what then? You’re screwed from the get go it would be absolutely better in my opinion to peacefully end your life and tell everyone goodbye while you still know them it’s sad and heartbreaking but you are going to die ANYWAY. We ALL are. Might as well enjoy your life while it’s here and make the most out of it and then rip the band aid off and go. No sense in letting the disease win. I remember when we had a similar talk with my dad's doctor. The doctor very strongly suggested that we consider a nursing facility for dad. He has Parkinson's/ Alzheimer's and was suffering multiple falls . It was a very difficult but necessary appointment. Dad cried, we cried. The doctor shared his personal experience with his dad which let us know that he understood . That was 1 1/2 years ago. We found a very good facility for him. He is doing very well physically. We visit him constantly and he liked that. We are appreciating the time we have with him. He's got the mind of a child so he is our little boy. God has been very good to us. We will continue to cherish our time together.

I lost it from 4:36-4:50. I know her pain in asking that question for your loved one. But what killed me is the blank distant face expression he had that entire portion. His face at that moment said a lot
This is among the hardest things for a doctor to do, and the worst part is that it will be just as hard for the patient and everyone else who hears it to accept. May that man live as long as possible.
My grandfather lived over 10 years with the disease, from the time the symptoms appeared. His was very slow progression. He started showing signs and symptoms in 96, got diagnosed in 97. He passed from the complications in 2010. He did very well until my grandmother passed. She kept him going, I think her and the meds he took helped slow down the progression because he always had routines that she made sure he kept up with, she made sure he took his meds, and he read her books every night to keep his brain moving. She could have easily read the books herself. But, why when her husband could too. :)

He covered the essential bases, and was informing the man's partner in a clear, full and appropriate way. She was probably the one who would be trying to ensure that he did what he could do, in order to have the best quality of life within an essentially hopeless situation. She was also being reassured that both she and the man would receive the best ongoing care, with reviews at regular intervals. The specialist had to pace it in a way that the woman would take in and comprehend as much of what he was saying as possible. No doubt that, in the ensuing minutes of the visit, he would discuss what specific treatment and medication would be best for the patient, and we can hope that he told them both how the carer(s) would be aided. Good practice would dictate that they would leave the surgery with printed documentation which would back up what had been discussed, and which would be helpful for others of them over the coming weeks, months and years.
My amazing 70 year old aunt was just diagnosed with Alzheimer, words cannot describe this woman. She lives by herself raised 5 kids. We live in the same state but different counties.

My mum and gran both died from Alzheimer’s disease, it was horrible toward the end of life. My dad was fine . But its so scary and worries me I have nursed people with dementia I just pray to god I stay healthy 😳

Noneyabusiness (respondent below) I hear ya! I see this video is 5 yrs old and hope finds you well. I did the same thing my husband and I . 6 sibs and no help , 2 brothers thought a visit on occasional sundays was their part . she was in skilled care 8 years a broken hip was the end of life as she knew it. As a nurse I did everything in my power to support love and advocate as did my sweet husband. she died at 91 ,all her money gone , My husband and me buried her and sued all the sibs for 8 years of round the clock nursing care at current rate ( my husband is a nurse also) and total other expenses not covered by insurance plus a very expensive funeral. We weren't going to scrimp on her send off!! 50% of caregivers predecease the ones they care for. God bless the care givers. I don't regret a minute I spent caring for my Mother. my hubby loves and misses her too.
This has to be the worst disease in the world. My mother died in terrible pain of cancer but she never forgot who she was or what she'd done in her life. She knew right to the end she was loved and who those people were. Your memories are who you are without them you're a shell. I think that was the most heartbreaking part of this video when his carer, I'm assuming it's his daughter, asked when would he forget who she was because that in a way is when you really lose that person. They're there but at the same time they're not. My mother in law had dementia and she completely forgot everything about herself and who her own children were she just sat in a chair drooling in a state of complete none existence and it broke everyone who knew her's heart. She was a lover of life, a happy fun loving person until the disease came and just destroyed her. There's a lot of research going on in the world about this disease and we can only hope they have a breakthrough soon. Yesterday, 25th October 2023, I was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. Like the doctor in this video, I was told in a very sympathetic way and was allowed to ask questions. I was not rushed and I felt I was not just another statistic. I too wish all doctors giving this news was as as good as the one in the video, and the one I saw yesterday.

Memory getting worse and anger and frustration setting in. I asked to be re-tested and that's when they diagnosed Alzheimer's when all the results were in. The first week was the worst, now, after doing a lot of research I have come to the understanding that I cannot change what it is, and I have to live with it. Talking to others is helping. There is still a long way to go but, with the support from others, it is helping to live with it.
My mom had Alzheimer’s and it was slow moving. Luckily for her, she had been a voracious reader and she worked until she was 76. By the time she received her diagnosis, she and my brother and I noticed some memory issues. When she was in her mid 80’s, she began to forget the names for every day items and would re-name them to what she thought they were. For example, Hershey’s Kisses became silver tops and she forgot the names of family members such as my children and my brother’s son. We had to eventually put her in a personal care home because she was mixing her meds up. When she was in her mid-90’s she forgot how to eat. She would take her fork and just smash the food and wouldn’t feed herself. Her final weeks were the hardest on us..she was so very very thin, she only weighed 89 lbs and it made her cheeks so sunken. Alzheimer’s is such a horrible illness..it’s almost harder on the family seeing their loved one going through this. What was so upsetting is my mom was much healthier than I am in my 60’s. She only had to take a few medications compared to my 30 I have to take daily. You know how some people will say “your mom lived a good long life.” I hate to tell them that they are wrong, her final 10-12 years were a nightmare.

I work in a nursing home and see this disease ravage people into nothingness ,to the point where they end up sitting in a chair, drooling, fed then changed then medicated then put to bed, the next day get up, eat, changed fed then more meds sitting and staring, over and over and over, the cycle repeats, this is cruel, families stop visiting, friends are long gone, empty shells

I could not disagree more strongly! He was very - VERY condescending! I went through this process, for almost eleven years! I'll tell you what my takeaway's were. Alzheimer's victims are treated like children. They are confused, and the first thing that gets stolen from them by clinicians is RESPECT. If you doubt what I'm saying, just visit a senior care center, and watch how the residents are talked to. Granted, most people in these centers are not medical professionals - they are, as we (family) concluded - underpaid butt wipers. This man - this Doctor (assuming) was in a unique position to discuss onset issues, yet he chose to speak to this couple like they were 5 years old. There is an excellent book that is available - it's called "The 36 Hour Day", and it's a living-and-breathing essay (care providers, family members, victims themselves, etc.) on brain disorders. The one takeaway I had that was immeasurably valuable was to LISTEN - not talk - to the sufferers. When my mom was in the 7th stage (there is no stage 8) my choice was to ask her questions, and to let her answer them - however she was able, even if she wasn't able. She mumbled, and she whispered, and her thoughts were disconnected, but I never interrupted her. The very last time I saw my mother smile was when she was trying to answer a question I asked her about ice-skating on the river as a young girl. I remembered the stories she used to tell me. She made no coherent responses, but she thought she was doing so, and I just listened to her. Why? Because her daily routine - every single day in that facility - was "How are you doing Maggie....? It's time for breakfast...." "Time for the bathroom, Maggie... you wanna go to the bathroom?" "Time for dinner, Maggie... let's get you over to the table...." Nobody EVER just sat with her and let her respond - other than me, and other family members. When you are confused, and nobody listens to you, that has to be the most frustrating and defeating circumstances that any person can endure. You are trying - desperately - to process what is going on around you, but people are just grabbing your arms, lifting you up, and taking you wherever the schedule dictates. I"m sure this Doctor is a decent man, but he's far too young to appreciate what I'm talking about. The loss of dignity - the lost of independence - the loss of interaction - - these are GIGANTIC issues! It would- in my opinion- be FAR better to tell someone with the onset of these diseases EXACTLY what can be expected. Let them process it the way YOU are processing these words - whether you agree or disagree. Don't talk to them like children.

My Mom is 92. Lived with me for the last 18 yrs. I’ve got to deal with this problem everyday, have for yrs. As a single retirement age man it’s a new adventure everyday just trying to find out what she wants/will eat. Unfortunately, almost always there’s only 1 in the family that takes care of the aged parent. I’ve got 1 sibling that don’t help at all and 1 that helps about twice a month for a few hours. But this is my Mom, she was always there for
me. I promised my Dad I’d take care of her, and I will! 1 of these days, she’ll be gone. I never once felt unloved, with either parent! Still don’t! That’s the 1 thing Mom is still capable of, love!

I’ve had to employ someone to help. Moms mobility is extremely limited so an assisted living facility is out of the question. Trying to keep her at home. I’ve had to take off lots of time, I’m losing weight, 20 lbs, I don’t need to lose weight. My family is worried about me now. By God’s Grace I’m still healthy! My Moms mental state is rapidly degrading. We’re both in God’s hands now!

Actually, it isn't because you get to a point where you do not realize what is going on because your cognitive functions completely deteriorate. Anti-theist I have 26 residents on my floor with Alzheimer’s. Only two can be combative occasionally, not even violent. And that’s only when they have to take a shower. (Many people with Alzheimer’s hate showers) and all except 5 can clothe, feed, and walk themselves. It’s not always what you see on Grey’s Anatomy. Most of my residents just won’t wake up one day.

Probably not the 1st time thru the info, but the wife's tears seem pretty real to me.
I thought this was staged first but the wife crying seemed pretty real to me so I started wondering if these people consented to filming for the benefit of doctors and patients dealing with Alzheimer’s. Anyone know for sure? The fact that only first names are given for the actors of “Lydia” and “Sam” makes it seem like some sort of confidentiality that would imply it’s a legit delivery but I don’t know for sure.
Either way, props to the doctor for wording that so tactfully. One of the most important qualities to have in this kind of field. You have to deliver a lot of bad news and you better know damn well how to make it the best. And not just beat around the bush. You have to be clear but word it as gently as possible without distorting the weight of the information you give.

You can experience so many horrible things in a career span that the only way they can cope is to disconnect from empathy and emotions. This guy, staged or not at least KNOWS how he SHOULD be wording this stuff and I really appreciate that. It’s the first step to actually APPLYING what you know you should do. Very tactful and informative especially to people who are analytical and want a step by step of someone’s line of thinking of how they ended up at the conclusion.

My mom passed away last year because of Alzheimer's. Life is changed forever. Her father passed 20 years ago when they didnt have the meds that helped her get a few good years before she was gone. My heart still hurts that she saw in him what was going to happen to her. The sweetest and strongest woman I've ever known and was blessed to be her daughter. This video appears to be at least four years old and I just wonder what Sam's condition is presently. My husband was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and for two and half years I cared for him at home. He got so he could not stand and I could not physically lift him from his bed to his wheelchair and at that point he had to go into a hospital. He was there for 2 1/2 more years before he died in 2008. The first major flag I got that something was terribly wrong with him was when he asked me one day where we kept the cereal bowls. The cereal bowls had been kept in the exact same spot for over 20 years. Then he totally forgot how to use the microwave. One thing that gave me some comfort is that while his condition was devastating to me, it didn't seem to bother him much because he was not aware of how he was gradually losing more and more abilities and I was greatly comforted by the fact that in the five years from his diagnosis to his death, though he forgot many things, he never forgot who I was and he could always carry on a conversation with me and he maintained his sense of humor right up to the end. There is no cure for Alzheimer's but my husband was prescribed Aricept and Namenda which are thought to slow the progression somewhat. I do not know if it slowed the progression of Alzheimer's in my husband because I do not know what his condition would have been like if he had not been taking the medicine. As I watched this I thought that Lydia as Sam's caregiver is in for a long haul and I wonder how she is doing. This is a very sad disease both for the patient and the family. BTW, what a gentle and caring doctor Sam has. I was terribly impressed by the compassion he showed for both Sam and Lydia.

That’s exactly what I plan to do. My grandma got early onset Alzheimer’s at 55. If I’m unlucky too and get it through genes I will be peacefully ending my life I already talked about it with friends and family. Yes I am young as seen by my profile picture but I don’t want to be in that 1% of familial Alzheimer’s disease that is 99.99% guaranteed by deterministic genes of the faulty chromosome 21. Only 200 family lines have it and it’s usually super early like 30 years old. I am 23 now. I don’t care how anyone else feels about it since I was 14 I decided that. It’s my life and you are going to die anyway. My grandma suffered tremendously for no reason. It would have been better had she been gone I was so relieved when she had died she died with a smile on her face. It hurt her and our entire family and was a burden on everyone. So I will be ending my own life if that happens in a peaceful manner like taking a pill or carbon monoxide poisoning. Many people around where I live are religious and get mad saying you are disrupting “Gods” plan. I am an atheist. I don’t believe things were planned out and if there is a God that can control literally everything they wouldn’t have created such an awful disease and just sit their and watch people suffer good fucking people that don’t deserve this shit. I wholeheartedly agree with you. I don’t know whether or not you are a religious person I am not kicking on you if you are we all have reasons for what we choose to believe. I can accept every worldview however I grew up in a religious household I was a Christian fundamentalist at one time. Even if I were a Christian to this day I would feel like God would want me to take own life than suffer and despite what an all powerful being would want I would still do it anyway and ask for forgiveness even though truly I’ve done absolutely nothing wrong. When your dog or cat is sick and suffering you put it down you don’t watch it suffer for 20 years so you and spend money you don’t have and time the caregiver can never give back? Also what if you don’t have anyone to care for you what then? You’re screwed from the get go it would be absolutely better in my opinion to peacefully end your life and tell everyone goodbye while you still know them it’s sad and heartbreaking but you are going to die ANYWAY. We ALL are. Might as well enjoy your life while it’s here and make the most out of it and then rip the band aid off and go. No sense in letting the disease win. It’s an awful heartbreaking disease and I hope to find a cure for it or see someone else find a cure it needs to happen ASAP

I remember when we had a similar talk with my dad's doctor. The doctor very strongly suggested that we consider a nursing facility for dad. He has Parkinson's/ Alzheimer's and was suffering multiple falls . It was a very difficult but necessary appointment. Dad cried, we cried. The doctor shared his personal experience with his dad which let us know that he understood . That was 1 1/2 years ago. We found a very good facility for him. He is doing very well physically. We visit him constantly and he liked that. We are appreciating the time we have with him. He's got the mind of a child so he is our little boy. God has been very good to us. We will continue to cherish our time together.

My grandfather lived over 10 years with the disease, from the time the symptoms appeared. His was very slow progression. He started showing signs and symptoms in 96, got diagnosed in 97. He passed from the complications in 2010. He did very well until my grandmother passed. She kept him going, I think her and the meds he took helped slow down the progression because he always had routines that she made sure he kept up with, she made sure he took his meds, and he read her books every night to keep his brain moving. She could have easily read the books herself. But, why when her husband could too. :)

He covered the essential bases, and was informing the man's partner in a clear, full and appropriate way. She was probably the one who would be trying to ensure that he did what he could do, in order to have the best quality of life within an essentially hopeless situation. She was also being reassured that both she and the man would receive the best ongoing care, with reviews at regular intervals.
The specialist had to pace it in a way that the woman would take in and comprehend as much of what he was saying as possible. No doubt that, in the ensuing minutes of the visit, he would discuss what specific treatment and medication would be best for the patient, and we can hope that he told them both how the carer(s) would be aided.
Good practice would dictate that they would leave the surgery with printed documentation which would back up what had been discussed, and which would be helpful for others of them over the coming weeks, months and years.

Noneyabusiness (respondent below) I hear ya! I see this video is 5 yrs old and hope finds you well. I did the same thing my husband and I . 6 sibs and no help , 2 brothers thought a visit on occasional sundays was their part . she was in skilled care 8 years a broken hip was the end of life as she knew it. As a nurse I did everything in my power to support love and advocate as did my sweet husband. she died at 91 ,all her money gone , My husband and me buried her and sued all the sibs for 8 years of round the clock nursing care at current rate ( my husband is a nurse also) and total other expenses not covered by insurance plus a very expensive funeral. We weren't going to scrimp on her send off!! 50% of caregivers predecease the ones they care for. God bless the care givers. I don't regret a minute I spent caring for my Mother. my hubby loves and misses her too.

This has to be the worst disease in the world. My mother died in terrible pain of cancer but she never forgot who she was or what she'd done in her life. She knew right to the end she was loved and who those people were. Your memories are who you are without them you're a shell. I think that was the most heartbreaking part of this video when his carer, I'm assuming it's his daughter, asked when would he forget who she was because that in a way is when you really lose that person. They're there but at the same time they're not. My mother in law had dementia and she completely forgot everything about herself and who her own children were she just sat in a chair drooling in a state of complete none existence and it broke everyone who knew her's heart. She was a lover of life, a happy fun loving person until the disease came and just destroyed her. There's a lot of research going on in the world about this disease and we can only hope they have a breakthrough soon. God bless these people and I agree with the other comments in this thread, the doctor is a legend, a genuinely compassionate man and good at his job.

Yesterday, 25th October 2023, I was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. Like the doctor in this video, I was told in a very sympathetic way and was allowed to ask questions. I was not rushed and I felt I was not just another statistic. I too wish all doctors giving this news was as as good as the one in the video, and the one I saw yesterday.

Yes, I am 70 and was diagnosed with cognitive memory impairment about 8 years ago. It's only in the last 6 to 8 months that things have changed. Memory getting worse and anger and frustration setting in. I asked to be re-tested and that's when they diagnosed Alzheimer's when all the results were in. The first week was the worst, now, after doing a lot of research I have come to the understanding that I cannot change what it is, and I have to live with it. Talking to others is helping. There is still a long way to go but, with the support from others, it is helping to live with it.

My mom had Alzheimer’s and it was slow moving. Luckily for her, she had been a voracious reader and she worked until she was 76. By the time she received her diagnosis, she and my brother and I noticed some memory issues. When she was in her mid 80’s, she began to forget the names for every day items and would re-name them to what she thought they were. For example, Hershey’s Kisses became silver tops and she forgot the names of family members such as my children and my brother’s son. We had to eventually put her in a personal care home because she was mixing her meds up. When she was in her mid-90’s she forgot how to eat. She would take her fork and just smash the food and wouldn’t feed herself. Her final weeks were the hardest on us..she was so very very thin, she only weighed 89 lbs and it made her cheeks so sunken. Alzheimer’s is such a horrible illness..it’s almost harder on the family seeing their loved one going through this. What was so upsetting is my mom was much healthier than I am in my 60’s. She only had to take a few medications compared to my 30 I have to take daily. You know how some people will say “your mom lived a good long life.” I hate to tell them that they are wrong, her final 10-12 years were a nightmare.
