I took my 89 year old dad for this test and was shocked to see how many answers he got wrong…the year, the month, the day, the season..all wrong. Afterwards in the car I asked him how he thought it went and he said he was glad he sailed through the silly test, it was too easy! He’s since been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s so things are just going to get tougher….

There’s a 6 hour test my mother took from a neuropsychiatrist, then followed up a year later that lasted about 1 hour... she lost her battle to Lewy Body Dementia last year at 68... My mom had this test at her primary care doctor’s office for years and always passed with flying colors. It was clear to all us family that she was suffering from some sort of dementia but when she passed this test all the time her doctor wouldn’t take further action. It was only after her endocrinologist noticed some memory issues in conversation he requested a MRI brain scan and finally was diagnosed with FTD behavior type dementia and you could clearly see parts of her brain were just gone. I was told people suffering from FTD generally do quite well on these types of tests for quite some time before they start getting worse.

Interestingly it doesn't affect me as much as someone who actually has dementia. It must be that growing up I learned to cope with it while someone with dementia hasn't. Could be that someone in the early stages of dementia could use some of the common ADD coping skills.

We never asked who the Queen was it was the Prime minister and more testing the leader of the opposition especially when Margaret Thatcher was in office she was there so long, our counting test was to count backwards from 100 in 7s, she went 100, 93, 86, 79 etc faster than I could, also we did a collection of items say 6 and take 2 away, what's missing? She told me what they had been a year ago, cheers John.

My sister in law was having problems with memory which her husband brought up at her doctor's visit. Her doctor gave her a sheet of paper with a blank clock face and asked her to write where 12, 3, 6, 9 would go. She looked up from the sheet of paper and said "I don't understand." Thus became her descent into Alzheimer's which took her life five years later. It was so sad to watch a vibrant, active lady just vanish a little more each day.

So on that test, I'd fail miserably, my mother aced it, but she has been diagnosed currently with "mild memory loss" but, being with her regularly, her short-term memory is getting very poor. She asks the same questions repeatedly and gets distracted very easily. Apparently it's the totality of various questions/tests that aid in diagnosis.

Do you know where the studies are on the efficacy of the 3 word recall test? There are 3 little articles I've found, but not any decent studies to justify giving that test to the elderly. I know it's a standard test and I'm betting someone came up with it decades ago, and it has just been passed on down without any clear research. I'm writing a graphic memoir of how I used my health and fitness knowledge to stop my mother with mild dementia from forgetting me, and I've been flummoxed on the actual studies for the 3 word recall test and the cube drawing test. On a day when conversation is going well and no one’s scheduled to be anywhere, maybe in a neutral and quiet environment, can you ask her what her fears are? Most importantly, it also has to be when you are ready and able to listen actively to really seek to understand, not reply, fix, challenge, reassure or otherwise jump in with your thoughts and emotions.
Does she know people who have developed memory loss? What are her observations about how it was handled. What went well? What went poorly. What could have been done differently by the people supporting the individual who had memory loss?
Speak to your own doctor about this concern for your mum. The doctor will advise you suggestions they have learned.
      Research this online.
In meantime for you and concerned family to keep a log of concerns as examples when time comes and it has to be assessed because it impacts her normal functioning. @HopeAngel777

And was it High street or Hyde street?

Yes. There is very little help for people with hearing difficulties on these tests. The only reason I got answers correct was because I was reading the closed captions, otherwise I would have been lost.

How many people forgot the name and address! It would be easier remembering who the Queen was as she's been there 60 plus years.

I remembered the name and the county but not the street number. I'm in the U.S. and I could remember who the Queen is. ;)

Very late reply, but in case anyone is interested, being given a name and address to remember is a test for short term memory. Knowing the Queen is long term memory, so not useful for testing short term memory.
