  • I switched to a Chamberlain release for downrigging in my kayak, and I'm shocked at how well it has been performing so far. I switched from the traditional Scotty clips because I was missing a lot of lighter hits and smaller fish. The Chamberlain release lets you adjust vertical and horizontal release pressure independently so you can load your rod tip, and still trigger a release on smaller fish and hits.

I use those on my boat but not on my kayak. I use the smaller version of the Scotty clip for smaller fish like Kokanee. The issue for me with the chamberlain on the kayak is since the weight is connected to the bottom, I always need to bring the weight onboard to use the clip. On rough waters this is challenging. With Scotty clips i can easily grab the clip without messing with the weight. Love the chamberlain releases in action though.

@@supercliff5634 absolutely! Definitely similar painpoints for me, although my hookup ratio is much higher with the Chamberlain's, so the pros outweigh the cons. If I'm just out for a quick run, I'll still use the Scotty clips. Good luck out there!

Have you tried the smaller Scotty slips. They are ok for smaller fish. Not as nice as chamberlain for smaller fish but ok. I also use weighted clips to slide down the downrigger line so I can keep the ball at depth and not need to pull it back up until I run out of extra drop weights.

@@supercliff5634 Absolutely! I've run the smaller clips before. Chamberlain is just my go-to confidence clip, so it's what I mainly fish here on Georgian Bay
