    I’m an old man- taught to fish by my uncle when I was a small boy in the late fifties. It was a greenheart rod and silk line in those days, and river only. I love your videos- not only for the instruction and the action, but the quality of editing and presentation. You present the essence of fly fishing - it is not about numbers or “bagging up” where trout,conditioned to pellets raining down, have no fear of your presence and will grab anything falling through the water - but being able to work it out when faced with a challenge. Keep it going!

    Great video, very informative especially about the spiders and awesome to see you letting the young lad play a carp on the fly rod. I was three or four when I was given a rod to play my first trout and still remember it vividly. Enjoying your videos, I'm currently adapting to the different style of fishing here in the UK with washing line methods etc. Been here a month now and loving it. Very different to our stillwaters back home so the change and the challenge is quite refreshing.

    • @OnTheFlyNZ
      @OnTheFlyNZ Před rokem

      @@RhysFishes I do a bit but it's made up for with the quality of of the stillwaters and loch style 'culture'. We do have good stillwaters but the whole loch style scene here is really exciting to be around. My river fishing is at a reasonable level (never perfect as you know) but I know if I want to be competitive at larger FIPS comps and consistently qualifying I need to work on my stillwater and there is honestly no better place. If you don't own a boat in NZ you won't get any loch style practice and bank fishing lakes aren't very common. So while NZ is obviously a great fly fishing destination there is a lot to be desired about the UK scene also especially for comp anglers.

      @RhysFishes  Před 2 lety

      It could be a whole host of things to be honest. I’ll generally switch to spiders to invoke a response out of the fish when they is a lot of food about. The movement of the fly I think is more important than the actual spider pattern. But the flies are dressed to stay high in the water column and on light tippet. They could represent natural food but I think the movement is the key 🎣

    Hi Rhys, great video thanks - I like the spider patters. They look like they are softer hackles than what you get if you buy crunchers for example tied commercially. What type of hackle feathers and hooks do you use for these and do you prefer the softer hackles generally for nymphs?

    • @RhysFishes
      @RhysFishes  Před 2 lety

      Thanks Mike. The natural spider is actually just a standard partridge hackle from veniards (pack of loose feathers). On the black and brown spiders they are genetic capes (Metz if I remember correctly).
