I love the end bit. I always watch these videos and then I head out to the lake with a clear plan and think I can catch them the same... 4 hours later after throwing everything in the flybox and no fishI head home and go watch more videos...

Great video Tim as always. I gave the static straight line buzzers a go on my local today and had 2 rainbows at 6 and 8 pounds which are the biggest I have had from this water. Epic takes and fights. I think that the fact that I was also using the excellent buzzer patterns which you tied up for me helped! I am a very satisfied customer!. Keep up the good work

I'm in AK and tried a tip from your methods of fishing over there. I took a black sharpie and colored my floating line black 6" and alternated no color 6", the length of the fly line. Really makes it look obvious if the fly line moved on a calm day. I fish from a float tube so my rod tip is always underwater. When it goes dead calm it gets tough and I fish naked and started doing slow 1" pulls and managed a few more fish. Biggest fish I caught was 28" on a copper chironomid.
They used to make a floating line with the first 20ft black and white as you describe . I think it was Snowbee that did them .. very useful for this kind of fishing . Thanks for watching

They are my favourite rod from the range . All the Wychoood line has been re branded and we have had the new versions out for testing over the winter . They have kept the great action of the T2 but now the blanks are in a really nice deep red colour . The reel seat and handle has had an up grade . AND they are going to be the same price as before . Expect to see them in the shops early March so just hang on a little for a brilliant bit of kit . I believe they are now going to be called the MA range .. As soon as they are out you will see them on my social media .

Thanks mate I am glad they help . I love the Wychwood connect series Rocket floaters . They cast like a dream , they are the white floaters you can see me using in all my vids . They are also superb value for money ! .. The Wychwood little dipper is a lovely slow midge tip and again is a pleasure to cast and fish with . THE daddy of midge tips is the Rio Aqualux 3 ft midge tip , nothing comes close when you want fast sinking tip line . Thanks for watching.

Thanks mate . Yea its been a long time . Nice now we have the best fishing in front of us . Absolutely you can fish diawls or crunchers or any nymph in exactly the same way . The Fab sinks as will a booby with the weight of the buzzers , the purpose is to slow the decent and give the leader a more horizontal angle so to get both nymphs in the take zone at the same time !!! Works best with a booby but most waters dont allow catch and release with a booby , a Fab is a pretty good alternative . Thanks for watching mate . Tight lines

Great video Tim I've never been able to catch on buzzers, but definitely can't wait to give it a go this year you said it was size 10 buzzers you use would that be the size you would recommend.
Definitely a method worth persevering with . Get the depth right and resist the urge to move the flies and there really is nothing like it !
Yes size 10s nearly all year , sometimes smaller in the middle of winter but a 10 is very representative of the natural . Also I think straight hooks as appose to the curve style grub hooks are again much more akin to the natural buzzer . Colour and pattern really isn't that important , if you stuck to the crisp packet or the quill all year you would have great success .
Buzzer season is nearly upon us , should be in full swing by March so now's the time to start preparing .

Question I have is how do I stop the droppers from twisting around the leader when casting? Seems to happen to me a lot.
Thanks for watching ... Easy answer .. DONT bother ! .. Dropper twist is something we all get especially when having a big fly like a booby or FAB on the point .. It doesn't affect the way the fly fishes and often un twists in the water . You will drive yourself nuts trying to stop it from happening !

Hi Tim, great vid. Do you use a tapered leader on your cast or 8lb flouro for the full 12ft?
8lb fluro all the way through . I never use tapered leaders with the exception of fishing very larger un aerodynamic flies on very long leaders such as Popper fry patterns .Tapered leaders are really for the rivers and dont serve any real purpose for this kind of fishing. The energy produced with a set up like this will easily turn any cast over nicely . Thanks for watching .

Wow ! There’s a question ! Basically everywhere any time . Has to be the most used and versatile lure in the still water anglers box . Basically select a fab over a blob when you want the fly to sink at a much slower rate . As for them .. any line anything from completely static to pulled at lightening speed . I will try and put a reservoir piece together in the late spring which will cover some of this . Thanks for watching .

I have but this isnt an ideal presentation for this kind of fishing , it also puts a lot of stress on the hooks which can result in breakages . Also using the leader and droppers allows you to swap between methods , i.e straight line to washing line to dry fly simply by changing flies and no having to re tie leaders . Its very user friendly and offers brilliant presentation . Cheers for watching

Tim I'm new to fishing, what length are the Droppers. Great video as always.
Keep them no longer than 6 inches ... happy to fish them at half that too ... equally spaced on the leader .. if you make the droppers too long they will tangle and twist in the cast . 3 turn water knot for the droppers always .. Thanks for watching .

Great vid, do you know what the wychwood feather down floater is like? I was thinking of getting one for my 6 weight to fish buzzers on.
Its more of a river line in my opinion , lacks the turnover you need for a cast of buzzers . The rocket floatier is the better line for still waters.

Thanks mate . Its the Wychwood connect series Rocket floater .. a lot of line for a very fair price . Its the only floater I use now . I always match my lines to the rod rating . Stepping up can help when you are learning but most good rods and lines should be matched like for like . Thanks for watching .

Very informative video Tim. I'll be giving this method a try soon. I noticed you seem to be able to land your fish very quickly or do you edit out some of the play? I'm always scared of bullying the fish too hard and losing it. What's your advice on this aspect please?
Its a brilliant method and so so deadly through the buzzer season .
No there is no editing that is the speed I land my fish , its down to years of experience and match fishing with the trick being to get the fish to the net before it knows it hooked ! Looks a little brutal but the fish expends minimum energy meaning it takes vey little recovery time before they are released fit and strong . Definitely better for fish welfare .
A softer rod and keeping the angles of the line to the fish low help to subdue them quickly . I use strong hooks and decent fluro carbon 8lb/0.2mm usually .
My advice is to keep the rod low so the headshaking is kept to a minimum , keep the angle of the rod so its absorbing the fight and when you get the fishes head up commit to landing it . It really is a practice thing . You might like the video I did on playing fish with barbless hooks ... the theory is exactly the same .

Thanks for watching . If you cast left as the breeze moves the line it creates to big of a bow in the line which makes the buzzers speed up and ride high and fast . By casting across or at 45 degrees to the wind I can get the best natural presentation .

The leader is 8lb Wychwood Ghostmode . Its straight through , there is no benefit from tapering when using this kind of tackle . The point fly is a Crisp Packet buzzer in a 10

Yes . I would only really increase the length of leader depending on how deep I wanted the flies to drop in the water . It depends on your venue . Chigboro is not much more than 12ft at best so I was happy that I was covering all the depths .
When u switch to a fab or a large caddis (instead of a booby) do u still use the same flies on ur droppers or change to something with breathers ?
Yes I didn't change a thing in this video . I just wanted to slow the decent of the buzzers. Sometimes I will use a more hackled dropper fly if I want to keep the flies higher like a cruncher or spider pattern . Breathers on Buzzers in my opinion make no difference at all to how fast the buzzer sinks or to its effectiveness .

Hi Tim , I am fairly new to fly / buzzer fishing and would like to know what combinations should i use ? I have collected and spent a fortune on buzzers but don`t seem to have much luck .

Hi mike . Ok first thing , the actual colour and shape and size of the buzzer just isn't that important . The single most important bit is depth , concentrate on finding the feeding depth of the fish , this is simple trial and error through counting flies down etc , the indicator can be a great way of finding the taking depth !
The reason there are so many different buzzer patterns out there is because they are super easy to tie and to vary , a case of catching the angler not the fish !
I have every pattern under the sun like you I'm sure , but I have narrowed it down now days to the Grey boy or Bloodworm as a point fly and either crisp packets or quills as my dropper flies . Usually opting for the crisp packets in deeper or coloured water as they have a better silhouette , the quills I prefer in clear water . Then later on in the spring/ summer olive comes into play . And that's it for me really .
By narrowing your fly selection and simplifying your approach you will concentrate more on the all important depth control which really is the key ! Hope this helps and thanks for watching .

You were spot on about fishing the dries , I had a size 16 yellow dancer on the point and a hopper on the dropper and couldn’t do a thing wrong once I got the hang of it. I was missing fish after fish until I slowed down. I was a bit too keen to start with then bang I thought my arm was getting pulled off without any warning. Once I had sussed out where I was going wrong the fish were basically hooking themselves. Many thanks for the great advice it’s very much appreciated. Mikey from Scotland
I have dabbled with buzzers over the last couple of years - had a couple of successful trips and lots of failed ones....i use very similar tactics to yourself but I use a lot of size 12/14 crunchers/snatchers/diawl bach instead of buzzers. I have most luck may-august using these with a washing line in the top layers.....problem is most of my fisheries in Kent only let you use one fly......if I’m fishing buzzers etc I like to fish a team or it becomes a bit of a pain greasing leaders and joining leaders etc to get a single buzzer to to at the right depth......I find indicator fishing a bit tedious so tend to not bother with buzzers unless I can fish a team....I picked up the the wychwood rs2 ten foot seven weight before Xmas based on Lindsay simpsons review on CZcams and am eager to try it out....Is that the rs2 you are using?
A single fly approach can still be very effective . I use single nymphs a lot on Chigboro worth clients for ease of casting . You just have to be more accurate with your depth selection and control . It’s not ideal but it can be effective . I have the RS2s and love them . You won’t go wrong it’s a great all round rod . The rod I was using in the bud was h to e T2 which is a little softer . I use them a lot for teaching and they are a pleasure to cast . Thanks for supporting the channel . Tight lines
@@timjoyceflyfishing-essex6769 if you turned up at a fishery which was single fly and you wanted to fish a buzzer say 2 feet down would you bite the bullet and fish a bung? I have done in the past but I did not take up fly fishing to float fish if I can help it..... what would be your tactic in this scenario? I have seen people linking Fluoro to copolymer and greasing leaders etc but it looks like a right pain that way
Hi Chad, I have always fished straight line buzzer and have been very successful. I use my floating braid and 2' to 3' of tippet. I have even hooked fish with as little as 1' tippet. Good memory on the line and a very slow retrieve to keep contact with fly. Fingers crossed that we here in wales will be allowed to fish soon, as we missed last years buzzer fishing. I will be covering this method in my buzzer videos. Take care mate.

Hello mate, soooooo all these forums/videos are saying about using tapered leaders,and that mono straight to fly line is no good.....then switch to your videos on here with non-stop action, so I'm guessing this is ok to use as I'm a complete novice to fly fishing ....thanks in advance for any info and great videos 🙂
Absolutely . Tapered leaders are best used for small rivers and light flies where turnover is an issue due to short casting . Or in situations where you are using very big flies like pike or saltwater fly fishing . In normal situations there is plenty of energy generated by rod and line to turn your flies over . A tapered leader is seen as a short cut to correcting bad casting technique . As you can see from my vids you simply dont need expensive tapered leaders !

Absolutely , you can fish any fly on this set up . Heaviest or largest on the point of the cast and smaller up the line

Hi Tim, would you ever drop tippet strength down to give the buzzers more life, or is it too risky??
No never . Infact I usually up my breaking strain as the spring season gets going . We are now fishing 10lb tippet on Chigboro . The takes are so savage you cant go any lower and it doesnt effect presentation at all . The buzzers have very little natural movement and the trout certainly dont study them for long , they are more concerned with eating them befor another fish does . Nymphs are different and act differently but I never drop below 8lb tippet now days . Fluro is so fine there really is little benefit .

What is the best ROD for fishing on brewing and clywedog
Like any reservoir you need a rod that is a good all rounder that can present dries delicately to rising fish all the way to throwing a heavy di7/8 sinker . For me a 10ft 7wt mid /tip , medium /fast action rod is perfect . I use the Wychwood RS2 or the Truefly T2 for fishing Brenig and Clywedog .
How do you tie buzzer rig so you can play fish when the distance between top dropper and point fly is more than length of rod?
If you are using a 10ft rod then 12ft is probably the maximum gap from top dropper to the point maybe a little more if you are taller .. but there is absolutely no need to have a bigger gap , this would be for boat fishing only really . From the bank long leaders just arnt necessary ..
What lengh are the droppers on tim?
nothing more than 6 inches ..
How would you set up if you only have 4 to 5 feet of water ? Would the fly line not spook them if you only have a 4 feet leader. This is fo wild fish in a lake no more than 6 feet at its deepest
I would use a washing line , 6 foot to the first dropper , maybe more if the fish were really spooky , a couple of lighter weight patterns like muskins or diawls to stop them sinking and smaller sizes too for the same reason a booby on the point .. all this should hold the flies up and away from the fly line .. spooky fish also reduce the fluro to 6lb or less ..

When using buzzers then does the point buzzer is anchored to the bottom of the lake or all those buzzers are floating?🙏
If you leave it long enough the point fly will snag on the bottom depending on the depth of your lake . The trick is to balance the length of leader and the pauses between the long draws so as not to snag the point fly . This takes a bit of local knowledge of your water and some experimenting . Its a superb method when you get it working .

No a floater . The Wychwood Rocket . I rarely use a sinking line on a small water and when I do its nothing heavier than a fast inter .

All FABS sink mate . It tied as normal with foam in the back . Just slows the decent of the leader down offering a more controlled fall through the take zone .

@@barbcoll100 Slower the better with this method mate . If your fishery allows a booby would be even more effective
7 inch long droppers, how do you stop them getting wrapped around the tippet? I always have this problem with long droppers.
you dont need to ... dropper spin makes absolutely no difference to the presentation , it usually sorts itself out . Knots are something to keep an eye out for but dont worry about the spin . If you want to reduce the risk then make sure your dropper knot and fly knot are trimmed closely with no tag end protruding . Try and balance the cast so the heaviest fly is on the point . Dropper twist is usually at its worst when using a booby or a heavily dressed fly on the point as its this that spins during the cast . But I can honestly say that droppers spinning do not effect the fishing at all . Thanks for watching .

Then you have a casting issue .. possibly your loops are to tight or its a tracking issue? Have your cast looked at by your local instructor he will soon be able to find the problem . Thanks for watching .

Does buzzer work on a river?
Depends on the river . Only slow moving rivers tend to have enough sediment to sustain buzzer populations . So short answer no not really a pattern used on the rivers , although im sure if you swam one past a hungry trout it would have it . Thanks for watching and subscribing .
But most of the fly fishing lake sites only allow single fly!
I think thats just your area or the lakes you fish . You will find most places allow up to 4 hook points . If you cant fish a team fish a single buzzer .

@@martinlewis1015 Yes it really does depend on the owners and their rules . Its a shame but its down to the fishery at the end of the day . Lakes like Chigboro allow 3 flies with no hook size min/max .

I can't understand why you guys schlep so much stuff around 😂 all you need is a fly rod and two reels max and a couple of fly boxes.
This is my teaching kit . I need to have a bit of everything ready to go when I'm out with clients . There's all sorts in that box, buzzers , nymphs , dries , lures .. something for every situation . Don't want a client having a bad day because I was poorly prepared !
I thought chigborough was single fly only.
Nope , just no Boobys on catch and release . Teams of flies are fine and have been for many many years .
