    Major mistakes I've made in the Greater Los Angeles Area where I was born and raised:
    Mistake #1 -- Was never taught how to properly hold a fish. I was scared off from fishing as a kid because of too many random jabs, pokes, and stabs. At 4:46 in your video you show how to hold a fish safely and properly. Fish-gripping tools also gave me some confidence until I learned how to safely handle different fish species.
    Mistake #2 -- When I started fishing seriously four years ago at 32 years of age, I spent too much time at unstocked city lakes and ponds and blamed myself for the lack of fish. Can't catch fish where there are no fish! 😅 Eventually learned to read the DF&G stocking reports.
    Mistake #3 -- Got the itch to fish and spent a lot of money on gear without realizing what I truly needed. Came out okay overall but definitely wasted at least $600 on equipment that's better off renting.
    Mistake #4 -- Lived by the ocean my whole life but didn't go offshore fishing until my mid 30's. Wrestlin' some of these bigger fish would be much easier if I was a younger man! 😂

    I've also got a tip for beginning fishermen.
    It's a good idea to use line that is tested for a lesser weight than your rod. That way, if you catch a chunker and the only way this fight will end is with something breaking, you spare the rod and take it out on the cheaper line instead.

    • @FishingwithNat
      @FishingwithNat  Před 9 měsíci +4

      Good tip. If heavier line is being used, you could set the drag light enough to spare the rod, but there's really no reason to have the heavy line if you can't use it to its potential anyway.

    Would love for you to do a guide on setting the hook. I'm a beginner and am rather frustrated at how many hooks I've had that are poor quality (fish is barely on) and cases where the hook is unremovable. Thanks!

    • @FishingwithNat
      @FishingwithNat  Před 10 měsíci +2

      Thanks for the suggestion. In most cases, it's best to set the hook right away, but you'll want to wait a couple of seconds with topwater lures like frogs. Sometimes a fish will suck a bait down immediately, and some deep hooks are inevitable. This problem is the worst with live bait because they may be chewing on your bait for quite a while before you get any indication that a fish has your bait.

    Pointing your rod tip at your lure is good one but in lakes and ocean. In shallow waters, river and rapid moving water it won't always work. Point is to make the lure swim naturally and that means directing it over rocks, plants etc. The lure can also sink too much if you point the rod tip at the lure.

    • @FishingwithNat
      @FishingwithNat  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Right. Pointing the rod tip at the lure was actually one of my mistakes. It is much better to keep the rod at an angle to the line so you can swim it toward or away from something, twitch it, etc., and it takes some stress/shock away from your line and redirects it to your rod.

    • @FishingwithNat
      @FishingwithNat  Před 4 měsíci

      Bass will be starting to move up shallow by then. I have good luck with crankbaits on deep edges of vegetation, or if you're fishing during a sunny day, you can sometimes find them in just a few feet of water hanging around vegetation or brush. Frogs work sometimes in that situation, depending on how warm the water is. This year has been a very weird winter, so even central Wisconsin lakes have just a few inches of ice on them. Lakes might warm up quickly this spring.

    If you had to choose one rod/reel set up for a beginner bass angler what make/models would you suggest? All the 'pros' say to get a good 65# braided line which I did, but now I'm looking for the R&R

    • @FishingwithNat
      @FishingwithNat  Před 10 měsíci +1

      For a beginner bass angler, I would actually suggest going after smaller bass first with a medium-light or medium power rod and a spinning reel with 15-20lb braid. 65# is for pitching jigs into heavy matted vegetation and yanking 8lb+ bass out. That's not really a technique for beginners, in my opinion. Around here, a 5-6lb bass is really nice, so I tend to stick with 30# or less for almost everything. I'll use a medium power rod with 15-20lb braid for smaller fish, or a medium-heavy and 30# for bigger fish and frogs. I'll occasionally go up to 50# for flipping into heavy vegetation. I really like my Ugly Stik Carbon spinning rods with Diawa Regal LT reels. Not too expensive but they are excellent.

    • @pain_weaver
      @pain_weaver Před 8 měsíci +1

      @@FishingwithNatalso I'll add not all braid is the same. 4 carrier braid is good for cutting through weeds where 8 or more carrier braid is supple and easier to cast lighter lures on. Also if you fish with good populations of toothy fish ( walleye pike bowfin ect.) Braid will make you break a rod lol. Learn a good line to line tie and tie on some good leader (mono or floro). Braid is superior when it comes to sensitivity (rod also plays a big role in this) as well as durability when it comes to season to season use. Floro degrades when exposed to UV light aka the sun. Mono also "dries out" making it weak. Braid is on all my rods in various #test but not more than 30#. I've pulled my boats with 15 to 20 lb test no problem when snagged to get to the snag. Even with 10lb floro leaders on. Quality line is important. Don't cheap out on the line. However that's a rule of thumb but there are exceptions. Berkley big game is decent line for the money and cheap enough for experimenting knots. You won't wince when you accidentally cut the main line instead of a tag end unlike expensive floro.

    One of the big mistakes I made, was buying too much fishing gear at once.
    When I got back into it, I spent hundreds of dollars on gear that I ended up not using. I stuck to only the a few basic lures and some basic terminal tackle. I suggest stick to the basic lures, like a crankbait, plastic worms, inline spinner and a topwater. once you understand how they work, you can expand and find out what works in your area.

    • @FishingwithNat
      @FishingwithNat  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Absolutely. Well said.

    • @pain_weaver
      @pain_weaver Před 8 měsíci +1

      Don't forget different lures require different techniques. Also having the proper gear for the technique is important. Also different fish require different lures ect. However as a bass fisherman I decided to use a bass bait for fishing walleye and crushed it. I used that particular bait the whole trip. And the "walleye guys" couldn't belive I was catching walleye with a 5/0 hook. Not to mention I caught alot of quality fish 17 to 22 inches or so with biggest being 24 1/2 inched winning me the pool we had going for biggest walleye.

      Palomar is good. I use the modified Uni the most these days.

    • @pain_weaver
      @pain_weaver Před 8 měsíci +1

      Uni is not stronger at all. I've broken hooks on snags with a Palomar. Any double line knot will be superior to a single line through the eye knot. I've recently switched to double pitzen knot for floro or mono leaders. The problem with floro is the limited number of knots you can tie. You will more often than not break off on a Hookset. Palomar is still great for mono or braid.

    One really useful tip is to carry a small towel with you, to help hold fish. It makes it easier for you, and safer for the fish as well. Much less chance of getting spiked.

    • @FishingwithNat
      @FishingwithNat  Před 2 měsíci

      If you do that, you'll want to keep the towel wet. A dry towel could remove a lot of slime and cause the fish to be more prone to infections.

    #0.1 Respect the hooks! I mean that especially when you have hooked a fish and are trying to get them off be very careful. Once the hook / hooks are still on fish mouth the fish can do sudden movement and you definitely don't want another hook to bite your hand. Imagine a wild pike on the net with one hook on its lip and one on your thumb. Pliers are your friend. And always have cutters with you that you can get the hook cut that has buried on to you...

    • @FishingwithNat
      @FishingwithNat  Před měsícem
