Fishing with Lures for Beginners - When to Use (Underwater Fishing Lures)

- Fishing lures for beginners...Fishing lures come in all shapes and sizes, and they can catch anything from bluegills to bass to muskies. Knowing when to throw a certain type of fishing lure can help you catch more fish and have a better time learning how to fish. We run through various lures including spinnerbaits, inline spinners, crankbaits, chatterbaits, swimbaits, topwater baits like Whopper Ploppers and frogs, and spoons.
I would highly suggest these items below as a great starter fishing setup. This rod and reel are not super cheap, but they will serve a person well for many years. A cheap rod and reel won't last all that long and eventually, you'll get a chance to use a nice rod and reel and realize that you were at a disadvantage with the cheap combo. It's worth the investment in a decent rod and reel.
Ugly Stik carbon spinning rod - medium light amzn.to/453HR9x
Diawa Regal LT 1000 alnk.to/5FapVu2
Berkley Trilene XL monofilament line (6-8lb) alnk.to/3ngzaRy
Basic crankbait (Berkley Flicker Shad or similar) alnk.to/5ufEWH7
Small spinnerbait - Strike King Mini or similar alnk.to/aeY7qJk
Large spinnerbait - shad or bluegill pattern is usually best alnk.to/g3b7NFl
Small swimbait - Mimic Minnow or similar alnk.to/fSgmORR
Topwater frog - a small size and a large size alnk.to/2FBxfH3
Inline spinner - Rooster Tail or Mepps Aglia are my favorites alnk.to/aANDopW or

Spoon - Little Cleo 1/4 - 1/2oz alnk.to/fHlBQ5P

This video is the gold standard of CZcams video. So informative. Been trying to figure out by myself without a dad or older person to reach me for years. Wish I had seen your video years ago.
Thank you - I really appreciate the comment.
I can be your dad ... For your mom
@@FishingwithNat I'm a bit new to fishing but just wondering does one use bait with this or are they use on there own
@@dragonknightn7n796 All of these lures are generally used on their own without bait.
@@FishingwithNatim new to fishing i fish for pike any lures recommended?
For anyone new to fishing ready to drop serious money on tackle, this is the video I would have them watch first. Awesome.
Thanks - I hope it's a helpful video for those who inherit a tackle box of lures or those who are looking to buy a few good lures for their local conditions.
I had to start over / I donated old gear to a nearest second hand store/ and I started fresh after watching Nat's video , like attending a crushing course you know?
@@gregory3108 I donated some old gear to a kids' camp, but I also have a bunch of old gear that I hang on to in case my kids or their friends want to go fishing. Nice to be able to give them a setup that I'm not attached to. I still let them use good lures as long as I don't think they'll cast into a treetop on their first cast. :)
well yes, I figured it out last year...disposed all old crappy fishing gear and started with all new one, save yourself a quite bit stress or disappointments while outdoors...something with hunting , you will not need a two barrel shotgun for a deer?
@@gregory3108 Not unless you want your deer to be in 10 pieces!
I've recently gotten into fishing, and all ive ever known was "cast a lure and hope for the best." This is really informative, concise, to the point, and has great visual examples as well. I don't think you could have made this video any better. Thanks!
Thanks - I really appreciate the comment!

@@immaturebread69that actually genious
@@immaturebread69thanks your comment is aging well I’m also going to be using your comment for future reference
Thank you! Many of the lure selection for beginners videos just TALK, no visual examples expecting that we already know what a "chatter bait" looks like. You rock! Great visual examples of each
That's exactly why I made this video. Thanks for the comment.
Its a fair point. But a fair counterpoint would be that you're watching this on the internet, you can google things you dont know and pause the video.
I don’t usually comment under videos, but I have to say, I haven’t fished since I was a kid; and now I am 30. This video was very helpful to me as I just got my fishing license and have no idea what I am doing anymore. Thank you for the concise well explained information. Will be sharing to my business partner before we go fishing 😊
I'm glad you left a comment - thank you for the feedback.
Throw what u want something will bite it if it's hungry or irritated enough
@@clintlansdell9505 Sometimes a fish will bite anything. Other times, they are more picky.
@@Cavachonc777reported for spam.
I came to say the same thing but the last time i fished i was 16, I'm 26 now. I've watched so many of this guys videos because he often lays out the facts and let's you decide. He says what he likes, says other things that work, and doesn't really shit on anything unless it's something universally shitted on like straight snap swivels.
So I’m new to fishing and went to the tackle shop and basically just bought a lot of stuff I thought is going to look tasty to the fish and some friends gave me a lot of their lures. Thanks a lot for this video, it’s really helpful that you show which fish is likely to bite on which lure and showing actual footage of you using it, when and where. All I’ve seen so far on CZcams was just Product placement and not really helpful for beginners. Glad there’s still quality content out here!
There's a lot of product placement out there. I find it to be annoying and not very helpful.
One time i forgot my lures, so i somehow caught a small fish with a chewing gum formed like a worm 😂
That's awesome. I had that happen once so I rolled up a part of a leaf and put that on a hook. It worked to catch me a few bluegills and perch. Sometimes a fish is curious enough to taste just about anything.
No insects or worms nearby?

I’m an EXTREMELY visual learner and this was WUITE helpful. Thank you for making it this way
I am very much a visual learner too, so I tend to teach the same way. Thanks for the feedback - it's good to hear that you enjoyed the format.
Thank you! I grew up fishing with live bait only (worms/bobber) in WI. But now that I live in Texas, I want to expand to lures and fake bait (save $$), but I didn't know what to get or how to use it. I've been looking for 2 years on YT to find something simple like this. You explained the bait, showed how it works in the water, which fish preferred what kind and what ones to use in cloudy or high vegetation. Plus it was short and concise to keep the attention. Great video for newbies to lures.
Thank you for the feedback. I appreciate it. So glad to hear that it was helpful to you!
Bro thank you for being concise. Too many fishing CZcamsrs are too long winded.
That's my style. I totally agree with you. Thanks for the comment.
Not too concise, forgot to mention a loop knot or swivel is needed for hard bodied lures
I’m just started fishing. I fish alone so this is definitely good for myself. Thanks !!! I’m definitely following you !!
Cool - thanks for the comment. Good luck!
By far the best video on CZcams pertaining to lures and when/how to use them. Subscribed and ready to binge your other videos 😂 thanks man!
Thank you - I appreciate the comment!
I'll second that comment. Great summary of Lure types and purposes
@@NobleKorhedron Great to hear - thanks!
Well, today was my first time fishing and you helped me get into it. I lost 2 swim baits and a spinner, caught 0 fish, and had a blast. Thank you for the informative videos
Darn - losing lures is unfortunately a part of fishing, and you don't always catch fish. Keep at it though and you'll catch more fish while losing fewer lures.
Started fishing again with my gf’s dad and this was a perfect explanation. Now I know what to use, how to use, and where to use so I don’t look like a rookie in front of her old man. Thanks 🤙
Glad you found it helpful! Good luck!

This is a great primer. I love that you have snaps on many of them. They are convenient and I have always caught lots of fish with them.
Snaps are great for quick lure changes! Thanks for the comment.
This taught me so much I just bought a rod and I’ve been running the basic worm and hook simply because I had no idea what any of these other lures even did hopefully next time I go out I can actually hook one and also buy some lures that’ll work with the fish in my area
Great - thanks for taking the time to leave this note. Good luck fishing!

Ok tons of great info. Thank you so much. Learned so much from this. Like use more natrual color lures for muddy waters and bright lures for clearer waters. Thanks man.

In doing research, I watch a video after this, and it made me reach the conclusion that this style of fishing is not for me.
Below, is the comment I made on that video. Still, thanks again, your video is very helpful. And the solution I found is more like what I was planning on land.
___________
Great video & passion, but you made me realize something sad. I'm considering living in the woods, hunting deer & rabbits with a bow. But what got me into fishing, is me considering living on a houseboat. I didn't want to eat ocean fish, because I'm worried about the pollution that ends up in the fish, like microplastics & bad-metals....So I thought, oh, fresh water fish must be clean & safe to eat.
But this video made me realise, all these lures that are used.
Is this plastic safe to eat indirectly? Is it biodegradable? What about the paint on the metal lures? And you're straight up using LEAD as weights. And how often are these things lost, and left out there?
I now feel like me, and the environment, are better off, getting a scuba kit, and shooting dinner with a harpoon gun, waaay upstream. Fishing is ridiculous. And those who catch & release for sport, are even worse, because they are not even eating the fish, but are still poluting the water with snatched lures, and all the lines that break, or purposely cut.
Thank you for making me realise this, and fine tune how I'm going to eat living offgrid. This isn't what you intended, but you still helped me a lot.
Thank you.
czcams.com/video/Nb8cApI1iqc/video.htmlsi=JAbuLt9CntTption
@@observingrogue7652 Thanks for sharing. I can address a few of your comments. There are certainly lines and lures lost occasionally. I don't litter when I'm out fishing, and I actually try to leave the spot cleaner than I found it by picking up garbage, bobbers, line, whatever. Regarding lead sinkers, there are alternatives to lead weights now. They are more expensive, but I use them and I encourage others to use them too if they can afford to do so. Lead weights are commonly ingested by diving birds and they die from lead poisoning. The safety of consuming the materials in lures is unknown to me, but fish are pretty good about spitting out anything that isn't food. In the grand scheme of industrial pollution, agricultural runoff, urban runoff, littering, etc., fishing tackle in the water probably plays a very minor part in contamination of fish. Unfortunately, heavy metals, PFAS, and microplastics are common in freshwater and saltwater nowadays. These things even show up in groundwater, and terrestrial animals like rabbits and deer can accumulate them from their food and water sources. As a professional lake biologist, I understand your concerns. Good luck with your off-grid adventures!
This vid was very helpful ty, would recommend

i was surprised kinda how well the berkely shad swimbaits worked for me. my lake is really shallow 14ft at its deepends and has thiiick vegetation soft easy to work with vegetation, but the pike and bass cant resist them, works almost as good as a topwater :) and they are affordable
