@@robertdoesfishing I went to burnhouse twice and blanked once. Was so disappointed with woodburn, never even got a take. Only seen about 6 fish being caught allday. Been to harelaw, Skelmorlie, Middleton, glenburn. Glenburn and Middleton are quite good and thanks pal.

Fished there many years ago while back up 'hame' visiting my parents. Had so many pulls but no hook ups. Water was very clear and saw every fish nip at the flies. Exciting and frustrating in equal measure.

Forgot to say, I've used the hoverer it's a nice line, I'm now using a rede river floater and intermediate, lovely lines and really cheap. The intermediate casts like a floater as does the hoverer, I've had sinking lines that feel forrible to cast but these 2 don't.
I had the rede river but it became brittle writhing 2months can be chucked out for miles though, I’m using the Scientific Angler Frequency very decent
@@stuartmcmillan2518 I'll see how long mines lasts, did you try a slick coating for it? Restores it's properties ususallly. I've used the frequency boost which is a half size heavier and I liked that one. My very 1st line was the 4cast by guideline I think and I could cast that well and my castings not good now never mind then.
@@stuartmcmillan2518 also got a snowbee xs floater, that fishes okay.
@@brianr9529 yes I always clean my lines with silicone spray after they’ve been used I’ve had no issues with any other lines I’ve had in the past, it’s a good budget line it was a guy from my work who recommended it to me and his has went the same way…..for £20 though it’s ok
@@stuartmcmillan2518 that's a shame. I've had mines since last year and it still feels okay, not had it lying on the surface in the sun for long right enough so that's probably a big factor. I used the snowbee slick treatment on a line and the line was excellent after it, shot well and floated well. I hate the loops that eventually break and when you tie a nail kkot the tip starts sinking. I've never used the loops you get that you glue on I don't trust them or myself lol.
Hi Robert hope you and family are well. Your vlog popped up in my fishing feed so I decided to give you a watch . Your Scottish. Fantastic as am I. I'm from SW Scotland. An 1hr ish drive from your self. The place your fishing is near Kilmarnock. Did not know of this fishery. Does it do a full day catch and release.. any ideas of prices.i think I may give this bit a go. Also will subscribe 👍 2. Great to see some one handling fish the same as I do. I also have an unhooking tool 2 sizes to cover all the diff hooks I use from 10 to 16. I never really touch the fish.

I’m actually not sure how deep the lochan is. I have asked before but the person at the counter wasn’t too sure either.
This was a slow intermediate line I was using with a sink rate of 0.5 inch per second. I reckon I was picking up those fish somewhere between 5-8 feet.
Can I suggest a couple of other channels to you, @Full on fly fishing with Luke Gator, another new vlogger and @Martyn Williams flies, both well worth watching, particularly Martyn, he is a professional fly tier from Wales, well worth a visit…
Re the battery issues, I struggled like many others until I invested in an external battery pack and a short usb cable, I wear the pack in an inside pocket of my vest and have the camera on a chest mount, for about £30 quid for a pair of batteries I get at least 10 hours filming from each… you will need an adaptor battery door available on Amazon for a couple of quid, I think it’s well worth a go… good luck Robert, keep the videos coming Sir.

Hi Gary, I would either use a surgeons knot or most of the time now I use small 2mm tippet rings which I feel are more handy.
It’s basically a small “o” ring, tie the end of the cutback leader to it and also the tippet material.

I don’t use anything too expensive for my trout fishing. My main still water/loch rods are a Guideline Reach 10ft 7wt and just an old Ron Thomson Chinook 10ft 7/8wt which I’ve had for decades and holds a special place in my heart.
Both reels are old Okuma Integrity 7/8 reels. They have lasted me years and years and the drag is still holding up alright. At some point I will have to upgrade but I’m going to run them into the ground first 😂

I have 2 Echo Lift rods, 4 & 5wt, 3 spare spools for all the lines I want and catch a ton of trout over my season in Canada for well under the price of a single mid range level package. It’s what I would categorise as a small “Stillwater”. I would say it’s pretty typical of that category and there are plenty of them around in Scotland. they can either be natural or man made and are almost always stocked with different species of trout.
We also have many larger bodies of water including reservoirs that are also usually stocked with trout and of course our countless natural wild lochs that can hold purely wild fish, be stocked or a mix of the two.
At the venue in this video, I paid £15 (around $18) for a 6 hour catch and release session.

I used to sub to a magazine called Stillwater fly fishing from the UK. About 30yrs ago thinking that our trout fishing would evolve into your style with small rather inexpensive impoundment.
But alas it was not the case and my hunch was thwarted by our wild rivers acts. Now mind you on a good day I'll fish 4+ hours and score 25 fish of remarkable size (keep limit is 5 daily) I release all I catch. And the same on the boat drifts with my buddy..
Alone I fish via float tube..

It’s a pretty beefy bit of software but after watching some beginner tutorials on CZcams I was able to grasp the basics and put this together.

I think it’s ran by some lads from the North East and a lot of the reports come from Loch Insch. From what I hear it’s very well run and the chap David that runs it also operates a Loop outlet store up there.

@@robertdoesfishing Haven't been to Loch Insch since it changed hands years ago but have had a few double figure fish there in the past. I used to fish the Dee in Aberdeen usually in summer in the Earl hours had a good few salmon and sea trout off it.
Following that group Robert
You use much heavier weight fly rods for trout fishing than we use in Canada. You are using 7 and 8 weight rods,where we would typically use a five weight, and at the very most a six weight rod. The place you were fishing was, as you said, sheltered by the trees and therefore wind should not be a factor for casting. If we were fishing for steelhead trout, which usually go about 15 lb. in weight we would typically use a 7 or 8 weight. Why do you think you generally use heavier weight rods than us? I saw the same inconsistency on a similar video from Wales, and he explained the reason was the high winds in the region he was fishing. Many of our rivers have rainbow and brown trout up to about 6 lbs. and brook trout up to about 3 lbs. When the trout migrate from the Great Lakes up the rivers to spawn we get big steelhead and up to 15 lb brown trout. The King Salmon also migrate up the rivers to spawn and they often exceed 30 lbs. We would also use a 7 or 8 weight rod to catch the salmon. I also own a 10 weight rod that I use for saltwater fishing for tarpon when I go South to either the Florida Keys or some Caribbean islands. It’s interesting to see and compare what equipment is typically used in different geographies.

So for this particular venue in this video you probably could get away with using a 5/6 weight. That being said these types of stocked venues can often have fish right up to 20 lbs so that would certainly be fun on a lighter outfit. The type of setup that I explained isn't exclusively for this venue or these conditions. Its just an all rounder setup that works well for me for any type of stillwater/reservoir/loch fishing and doesn't really limit me in terms of what tactics/flies to use other than perhaps small dry fly. There are times when Id be fishing venues similar to this, exposed larger reservoirs in the hills or even out on a boat in the middle of a loch in all sorts of weather, so this type of weight would generally suffice in any of those scenarios. Whereas a 5 weight on a windy Scottish loch probably isn't going to cut the mustard.
Single handed 7/8 weight rods are also ideal for summer grilse/sea trout fishing in Scotland depending on the size of the river.
For my river trout fishing I use an 8ft 4wt setup for fishing dry/wet fly, I don't generally tend to fish really large/wide rivers where distance is key.
For my salmon fishing I use a 12ft 9" 8wt double handed setup, again I chose this setup based on where I do most of my salmon fishing and this works well.
I hope that gives some context, certainly into why I choose these rod weights. You are right in that its an interesting observation you make!

Thanks Annie, one of the rods is a Guideline Reach 10ft 7wt and the other is a very old Ron Thompson Chinook 10ft 7/8wt.
Both reels are identical Okuma Integrity 7/8’s. They are discontinued models now but I believe the newer equivalent is the Okuma Airframe. Nothing expensive.

@@chrisjohnstone2392 9ft should be fine for smaller Stillwaters yes. If you plan on fishing larger open reservoirs/lochs I’d recommend at least a 9ft6” .
