My two horses are retired barrel horses I’ve had them since they were born and when it’s really cold or raining I think I’d rather not have them I’m 78 and I’m trying to outlive them because I know they would go to slaughter so I get off my pitty me perch and appreciate my health that I can still take care of them by myself still ride them gently for fun their 26 and it’s fun to teach them things that I didn’t when they were young we didn’t have CZcams and all the knowledge that there is now

    - as a Native elder living in a city can be almost unbearable at times...its true some of us "NEED" nature we feel we are part of it - its like a Spiritual balm 4 the soul & without time connecting with her (nature) we can become seriously off balance...personally when I start 2 get irritated & bitchy complaining about silly stuff I know its time 4 do some outside choirs or at least force my self 2 be still while reading a good book out doors. Its got 2 be an amazing thing 2 wake up each day around the awesome beauty of Montana - sometimes I need 2 do a gratitude list in my mind whenever I take the simple beauty of the natural world where I live for granted,,,even when I'm doing a thing I don't really like Mother Earth seems 2 take the stress/pressure of daily responsibility away - I know u know what that's like.

Friend of mine had a horse named Ember, an Appaloosa mare. Her paddock gate had 5 different closures on it, she could open all of them, but having five gave the folks at the barn a better chance of catching her before she’d gotten them all open and escaped. And I remember a pony from my childhood who figured out how to get through the barbed wire fence by watchers how us kids did it. They are very intelligent, and devious!

Of course, they were always the ponies with metabolic issues who had to have strictly-monitored diets ...

Love them both to death glad I made this decision….very hard some days but like your experience worth it over all. 🐶CC: "Sometimes I feel like I'm living in a bit of a simulation, I end up doing the same chores every day, over and over again." Remember that movie, Ground Hog Day? A lot of people are saying they feel like we're living in a simulation ~~ maybe it's true!
We subs agree that working the farm is "better than being stuck in a cubicle in a giant city somewhere." The horse-girl life is for those who love freedom. The chores are repetitive; I remember that well but miss it so much.
Glad you're getting the new electric motor soon. You are clever, figuring out that the solar power runs down in the night, the only time they escape. That happens in my RV which now has two dead house batteries and a charge controller not moving in the menu.

I had a narrow opening that had hot wire across it, so I didnt have to use the big gate each time I went into her corral. She would crawl her front end under that wire then she got her back end through! I would have never have believed it unless I saw it for my self! I half expected to find escape plans in her stall! My first jumper was a Belgian-QH cross, not a big guy, maybe 15.2 who jumped electric fences as if they were a joke. He looked rather like a classy plow horse, not at all like a brilliant jumper, but that's how he went where he pleased! We had another unlikely jumper of unknown heritage, bought off a rodeo stock contractor, bucking horse who'd jump out of a pen with a six-foot fence; the contractor called us because he knew we had jumpers. He led that horse up to a brick wall, at least 5', and had the horse leap it on a lead rope, for real. Cricket was about 16.1, but looked like a bucking horse, jug head & roman nose. He didn't buck w/out the flank strap but put all that power into jumping, reached Grand Prix level, showed at A level 1970s. I was a teenager but loved riding him ~ like being on a roller coaster, completely uncontrollable. He had a great eye, never missed a spot, but all you could do was point & pray. He never stopped, like the Belgian-QH never stopped, very powerful & enjoyed jumping. Funny thing is, the Belgian-QH was bred to be a field hunter but was too hot. When I was a junior rider, he bucked me off regularly. Power. So maybe... maybe Goose is a secret jumper?

Reminds me of a camp pony I worked with years ago. They had split rail fences. She popped out the bottom two rails sticking her head through to graze the other side and walked out. When I went to get her back in, she acted terrified to walk under the top rail that she'd had no trouble walking under to get out. I had to take her all the way around the corral and bring her back through the gate. 🤨🙄

We always found that when feeding our guys outside, there always had to be 1 more pile of hay than the number of horses in the paddock. Then the least aggressive one still had a pile to go to, and separate the piles, so the aggressive ones can't guard them all. I had a mare once that would go along the line fence of page wire and push the fence every so often, looking for spots where the bottom staples had been pushed out. She would then get down on her knees, and crawl under the wire. The stable owner was beside himself trying to figure out how the little devil was escaping. We also had a gelding who knew that if he ran at the electric fence and ducked under quickly, chances were that he wouldn't get shocked. He would then do the stupid routine that he didn't know how to get back in!

I watch your videos because I'd like to learn something about horses. Huckleberry eating poop... Could be a sign of diabetes, Cushing disease etc. Not to mention parasites hook worms, round or whip worms even when the poop is frozen. I got salmonella from my dog licking me after eating cat poop. A multivitamin with Vitamin B1 was vet recommended and the problem subsided but didn't stop and so I think it was a learn behavior. Whenever we were outside I had a muzzle that dog. I don't have a cat but some people used an empty soda can with pennies inside and shook the can to redirect the behavior when they noticed the dog heading over to the litter box. A vibration collar could be used... it's not something I would do but for some people it's that or re-home a dog with a bad habit who could end up euthanized. You could try getting another dog who doesn't have that behavior but keeps Huckleberry occupied. I've also seen people use a dog backpack filled with some rocks to keep the dog's mind off a learned behavior like jumping on people or pulling on the leash. Make sure weight of the rocks doesn't cause injury to the dog. You could use rice or weights instead. Some dogs want to show they can do something or can work. I had an Akita who was over zealous with his guarding duties but enjoyed having a backpack on him. I altered the backpack to hold a basket so I put tree branches or plant cuttings when cleaning the yard. He loved it sometimes carrying 30 lbs in plant cuttings. And curbed his guarding duties to be my garden assistant. Not saying you have to fix Huckleberry's Corprofagia habits just offering insite.

I don't mind that he does it, but he sometimes tries to sneak to-go snacks into the truck for later, which is not ideal 🤣 Rest assured he is dewormed on a pretty tight schedule and sees the vet regularly for blood work bc he is getting older!

Maybe something with a malt flavor? Think some grain have a malt flavor that dogs find yummy. Dogs like beer for that malt flavor. I volunteered at a dog rescue for 7 years and had to step away because I have grandchildren who need me but I miss the rescue not the broken hearted part of rescuing. You rescue souls who have no chance if it were not for you. Some of your videos have brought me to tears because you say that you couldn't get that mare or horse out of your mind and understand their future was uncertain. I feel the same with the souls I rescued and once i sent one pup on their way to a home 5 more showed up. It's tiring, expensive, emotionally and physically exhausting but your heart and hands must keep going. It's the love in your heart and the spirituality of your soul that propels you. I found myself talking to God because I needed a Savior or needed to become a Savior to do what was needed and to not look away when the suffering was too great. You do this for horses which are just a trophy or a tool to some people and are often neglected due to the expense of upkeep. I admire your knowledge, charity and love, your spirit and determination to leave things better than you found them. The before and after pictures are amazing and so rewarding. Thank you for saving them and giving the care and compassion that you do. I would certainly volunteer to work on your ranch but I live a distance away from you. I do the charity work because the company I work for donates money when I complete 50 hours of volunteerism to a charity. While volunteering I pick up skills and I've always wanted to learn about horses. While volunteering I learned how to drive a forklift, cut men's hair and do some vet tech things. Not together but in my volunteering journey. I wish you the Warmest Christmas and Prosperity in all that you do for the New Year.

We had a beagle who kept on escaping, so we electrified the back fence. He surmised the quicker his jump the less it would hurt. But sometimes he would miss-judge and he’d get tangled in the fence. If it happened while we’re out, he’d be hanging there getting the jolt until we returned. We didn’t have a farm but just an ordinary backyard.

I can't believe you do all of this alone. My 2 and donkey are alot, plus taking on all chores indoors🙁, During the pandemic I felt like I was the only person not bored. Sunshine and exercise are always a plus for me too.

We had a horse like that. His pasture was three blocks away from our house, but some mornings he was in the back yard, meaning he jumped over the gate. We patched the fence often. One thing that cracked me up was that we had a room in his little barn where we kept hay and grain. It had a padlock and we put the key on a nail outside the door. Often we found the key on the ground, so i guess he thought about unlocking the door!

I have 2 boys who get out of the pasture maybe 2 times a year, before we got the second horse my red boy would get out every other day... he would watch every move I made around the fence, I had the yellow handles for the electric fence, like your black one. he was opening the gate! i found the gates open! we tightened the fence, he rolled under it to get out... he was always in the yard when we got up every morning. but now that I have 2 they tend to wonder a bit... up the side of the mountain, in a place that is steep as a mules face. they act like a monster is behind me when they see me climb the mountain then they say oh its you mom and com down the mountain at a gallop. I duck behind a tree and smack the last butt that goes by and yell hoe that one will sit down to stop the other manages to stop before he falls ...then they want me to race with them back to the barn. Dumb animals they say! I call that bull!

50 years around horses and I've seen them do some pretty amazing things. one that I had for 25 years was a master at gates and fly masks. he liked kicking on the feed barrel at midnight.

I totally believe you work your butt off most days !! One because of the amount of mucking and feeding and buying of hay and two because your working so much we don’t get to see you enjoy and get to ride !! It’s been super warm and weird in Wisconsin also !! But yes, I still think your lucky to have those wonderful horses in a gorgeous state ! 😉 but yes, definitely, work your butt off for what you have !! 👍❤️🐴 - so do I !!

This is really hard work I admire you for it. I grew up on a farm and we were busy sun up till sundown. I envy your view of the mountains, I am no longer on the farm but no mountains in Indiana. I miss horses so much, thanks for sharing and keep up the good work.

I had an Alsatian dog who could open a door forward and backwards, The Alsatian would also ring the doorbell to be let in.
The Alsation had to stay at the vet and be locked into a cage. He escaped and let the other dogs out.

Enjoy your vids so much--I'm kickin' it, watching You work, which is kinda dirty & wrong-o. Laughed out loud when you mentioned the 9-5 office option. Yeah, NO. Ohmygosh, THAT would be epic AND viral, some kind of Seinfeld Country. Besides, I know 9-5, and Offices? Each day, see a problem, solve a problem? No, no, no. Have a meeting & new committee. Offices #panic when competent women are afoot.

I love watching your videos and getting to know about your horses. I imagine what your life is like and l know l couldnt do it. I worked as an RN 43 years. I did alot of running around in the hospitals and units taking care of people and issues and l liked that part. Would not like to be in a cubicle. I did enjoy when l could sit and chart, use the computer and phone. It was a crazy busy job but l liked it. Im now retired and push myself to work out at the YMCA. Once l get there I'm fine with it.
You work so hard at your chores and caring for your horses and farm. I've seen alot of your videos and look daily for another one! Thanks for letting me into your life!

Only wish I could have had 1 or 2 of these gentle loving animals in my life. Guess I'll stick with Harper, my 2 1/2 yo Sheepadoodle ❤❤. Have a nice Christmas.

But I am very glad there is someone out there who do what you do, living the life that is best for them. I could not work in a cubicle, surrounded by other people, too, by the way.
    Have a very merry Chistmas!

Merry Christmas to you and all your furbabies! Yes farm work is hard, you never get a day off and always have to change up plans for something else you have to do. I have a regular job, luckily I get to work from home but at the end of the day, farm chores start, every single day. I wouldn’t have it any other way, I love my life and my fur babies! Please make your videos longer, I love watching all you do and need them to be at least 15+ minutes! 😁

LOL, those dang solar fencers during winter (upper MI for us) but usually when my OTTB is found in the pony pasture it's because I forgot to turn the fencer back on, he was just stepping over the temp line that separates them.

Goose reminds me of another horse I like on a YT channel about Friesan Horses, but he isn't a Friesan, he is a warmblood. At least that's what I think they call him. He is the same colour as Goose and has a white patch on his face. He is so very cute at only 2 1/2 years old, but recently it was discovered he has wobbler. Everyone is heartbroken. It doesn't look good for him. : (
