  • I ran into a small hiccup when Scarlett was spooking at something in the round pen today.
    Her wild horse sense was on high alert, but with some confidence building and positive reinforcement she learned to be brave and face her fears!

    It's very obvious that your method is to be kind and tune into whatever horse you are working on. Your approach makes good sense & it's lovely to watch your horses gain confidence. I really enjoy all your updates but especially the ones with little Scarlett. It's also become obvious that Tiny must be in every video. :-)

    I think you explain yourself and how your horse is dealing with thing extremely well. You know, training anything or anybody is pretty much the same. Addressing problems right away with patience and creative repetition, encouragement, and reward works with all animals and people too.

    One thing I do with dogs who react to novelty is to supply small doses of daily novelty. Tie something different to the round pen every day (or at different heights or in different ways), put in a cardboard box, etc. When working, do approach and retreat toward novel items. I use the verbal cue: check it out. Always working to retreat before threshold. And always retreating no matter how chill the animal appears to be at first - you can always approach again but if you go over threshold, you can be back at square one quickly. Have found that helpful to teaching them to, at first, cope better and then, later on, seek out novelty. FWIW.

    We had the very same issue with my Mustang mare...She would see her shadow and just come unglued! It just took time and eventually she got past that fear bc I would stop her and reassure her that it was ok with treats and rubs. Great job!!

  • @annepettit3855
    @annepettit3855 Před 6 měsíci +6

    I do similar things with my young horse. I call it the Game of Life, as in “oh look! There’s some life over there!” It generates better vibes than thinking of it as scary things. It’s great that you’re teaching Scarlett that curiosity gets rewarded and that checking in with the human is the most desirable option. The instinctive fear of novelty may be a survival mechanism but it’s a crappy go-to for domestic life!

    i absolutely love your daily training sessions you tailored just for Scarlett. she really does love you , she is always looking at you or towards you for approval and your opinion on things that either make her nervous for your comfort or looking for that feel good praise you give her to boost her confidence , and that is something we all enjoy lol. of course she still is a bit green and still living in the mental state of wilderness survival instinct but it just shocks me that it has been well over a year now and she still remembers it. i assumed after all that TLC you gave her for over a year that she would have come around by now but i guess some creatures require a bit more grace than others. i just so hope she becomes that golden gem that you could trust blind folded backwards in the dark. you deserve a horse like that.

    So much fun catching up on many of the rescues the we all have become familiar with. I'm quite sure many CC Fans are drawn to a special one or two rescues so it was no surprise when my own Ears perked up when your Stewie was talked about and this Stuey immediately Smiled and said out loud..."Hey, It's Sweet Stewie"! My Bulldog, Jack Boy snorted a bit and looked at me as if I was cheating on him🤣 I have learned so much about what you do with your rescues and with the behind the scenes too! Most importantly, I've been reminded about just staying grounded and staying grateful from experiencing your complete patience with your babies! Blessings From COW-lumbus, Ohio MOO 🙏👋

    Love your videos! My background is dog training it I see a lot of kindness and patience in what you’re doing and it makes sense to me, and I can’t even imagine trying to train a “feral” dog! I also follow Ryan Rose and a lot of what he does makes sense to me as well but there are clear differences in your methods. I “think” that’s because Mr. Rose focuses primarily in his videos on problem solving for someone else’s horses so he has to do something right now, where you have the time to spend months or years with a horse. I’d find it interesting to hear you compare and contrast the two methods. I’m planning to retire in the next year or so and thinking of spending a lot of time with horses so I really appreciate content such as yours and Mr. Rose!

    CC, you started off talking about Scarlett's "little horse brain." Just what size is the equine brain compared to that of a cow, pig or dog? As a vet tech, you probably assisted in surgeries and have seen x-rays.
    I know horses are prey animals and skittish at shadows, anything new, or distractions. As you said, she is a "wild horse" and always had to be on alert; in time, and you're so patient, she will like her shadow.
    Somebody else lets her horses look in the camera; they see their images, get used to that experience, then even put their muzzles right into the camera for more, lol!
    Those are nice, convenient rope halters and neck pieces for lunging. Scarlett is comfortable with you because you're consistent with scratches' reinforcement and the occasional treat (not to spoil her).
    When I feed my kitty Temptation brand "treats," the directions actually say for just give 1/3 - 2/3 cup per 10 lbs (now a whole bowl). Then, I feed the regular kibble. Looks like your mouser cat loves the scratches, too, and has a full mouse belly again today.
    Love your videos!
