In this video I'm sharing my top DO's and DON'Ts when it comes to treating your skin topically using prescription-strength retinoid, tretinoin, which is widely considered the so-called "gold standard" of topical, anti-aging skincare ingredients.
This is not rocket science, nonetheless, I hope that sharing my simple yet actionable tips will be of use to anyone who is curious about embarking on their own skin treatment journey using topical retinoids (be they prescription or OTC), as well as serve as encouragement to stay the course and be patient & consistent with healthy skin-promoting habits.
Dramatic results, in my experience, take time; at LEAST a year (at LEAST - I really cannot overstate this or repeat this enough)!!! But it's also been my experience that putting the proverbial drop in the bucket, over the years, has been well worth the relatively minimal effort in comparison to the eventual outcome (in other words, it's been SO WORTH IT).
I also continue making these videos to serve as a visual representation of what a dedicated skincare regimen including tretinoin in the evening and sunscreen in the morning, daily, looks like after 2+ decades. With so many people nowadays participating in extreme "beauty enhancement" measures, I think there is value in showing what topical-only skin treatment can yield. So I always want to encourage people that you needn't do those invasive, trendy aesthetic procedures to get healthy-looking, youthful, glowing skin. There are other ways to achieve it: right food choices, sleep & stress management, consistent skincare, daily UV protection, and other boring lifestyle habits (all of which I've shared on my channel).
Content is for informational purposes only. I cannot and will not ever give prescriptive advice; rather, as a layperson, I'm simply sharing my experience and tips for usage. Tretinoin is a serious topical medication that must be obtained by a doctor's prescription ONLY and used ONLY as directed - that is, under the care & guidance of your prescribing physician.
    Products mentioned:
Tretinoin (avail. by prescription only - I use 0.05% Gel, generic for Atralin®)
(OTC alternative option to tretinoin = Differin® Retinoid Gel w/0.1% Adapalene: amzn.to/3QzhxPy - I have used and continue to use both products interchangeably at this current phase of my treatment, which is purely maintenance.)
    CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizer: amzn.to/4a5uPeC
Cetaphil Advanced Relief Lotion w/Shea Butter: amzn.to/3x5x7f4
Vaseline Original Pure Petroleum Jelly: amzn.to/3PBqNCl

I'm 18 and i am using tret for 6 months straight. One of my friends aunt started at 20, she's now 52. Most of em think she must be 25 or 30 max. I asked her about the secrets, she spilled it all. Morning skincare, she uses foaming face wash, vitamin c, sunscreen, mineral powder and eyeliner ( yes, she mostly doesn't wear make up). Night time, gentle cleanser, niacinamide 5, tret 0.05, lip balm (boroline), indian brand works high end, castor oil for lashes and brows ( similar to jennifer's routine only). Along with this, she cooks her own meals, tracks her calories, macros and micros religiously, goes to gym 4 to 5 times a week, she also does yoga. Consumes omega 3 pill, nac, vitamin c and eats a lot of veggies and fishes, does intermittent fasting, sleeps 8 hours a day no matter what, has a work from home job ( remote) which she absolutely loves. So yeah, there's a reason why she aged this gracefully.
Edit: she's a married childfree woman.

At 18 years old, I started wearing sunscreen. Morning routine: soft cleanser, toner, vitamin c + hyaluronic serum, moisturizer cream, vitamin c oil, sunscreen. Night routine: soft cleanser, toner, (glycolic acid 1x a week), niacinamide + hyaluronic serum, moisturizer cream. At 20, I started using tretinoin cream 0.025% once a week with my moisturizer, and my skin has stayed youthful for what feels like forever. I’m 58, and everyone thinks I’m 27-33, but this wasn’t all tretinoin. I became vegetarian at 20, eat plenty of veggies, take supplements, go to the gym 4-5 times a week, focus on my relationships, and try new things. my best advice for the youth, is to prioritize your self. Buy things that are an investment for yourself. Those supplements may cost you $60 today, but save your life tomorrow. Nobody has a problem when they spend $60 on fast food. 😂❤

100% agree with the hat recommendation. I have been using tret for over 2 decades and wear a spf as well as vit c. If I do not wear a hat, pigmentation will pop up if I am out in the blazing sun for too long. But with a hat, no problem. (my hat has sun protection as well) I think it is also worth noting that your healthy skin is also down to lifestyle, exercise and what you eat. Tretinoin will not do it all. Love your channel and started making our own bone broth at our home. As a person with Celiac Disease, it has really helped with my gut health. I' m 50 and I it recently blew my mind to realize that I' ve used retinoids (topicals and THE oral one) for 35 years of my life. It all started due to acne and, once healed, I stayed for their antiaging properties. My super oily perennial acne prone skin breaks out with tret🤷🏻‍♀️, sadly it is not for everybody but her antibacterial son, retinaldehide, has done a long term wonderful job. Consistency over intensity has been the mantra. Plus, it "forced" me to use sunscreen 365 in the wild 90’ s, when it was not a normalized habit yet. Not to talk about my body skin, straight up sorcery😉✨

However I don't think I'll continue after this tube, because I moved and I don't believe most doctors here are so liberal about tretinoin. I think I just got lucky. I just got over a bout of allergy). I tried Retin A Micro years ago and of course I gave up thinking that it would be impossible for me because of my sensitivity. Until I saw you, and what a lifetime of Tretinoin has done for you. I was amazed at the result and this is when I thought that I must persist with it. I did and my skin is very good for my age. I do have laxity but am persisting. Let's see what I can achieve. I only wish I had persisted back when it was prescribed to me. Yes, but tretinoide is not everything.
Your face is full (you have no visible volume loss) and your face is wide which is like 50% of the youthful-looking factors.
And that is not due to any vitamin A derivate products. Rétinoïdes can only treat the skin, not the fat pads, not the fascia, not the smas, not the bones.
Tell us what you do for the volume of your face.
How many wrinkle-free faces looking old do we see on social media in celebrities lol? They might have no wrinkles but the saginess and hollowness say it all about their ages.
Wrinkles is only a small part of aging.

The amount of compliments I get for my skin is insane, and people don't notice this, but my face is firmer, my eyelids are tighter and with no folds. One of my challenges has been the fact that my skin stated to shine, not because of oil, but because the skin is plain and therefore it reflects more the light.
I watched your videos when I was starting, here in Brazil you don't need a prescription to get tretnoin, what makes my responsibility bigger.

I used to had Severe acne in my teenage which almost vanished by the time i was 18-19, i never got it treated and out of immaturity i always pinched them leading to end number of acne scars all over my face today
I started to take care of myself last year only in August, i binged watched end number of videos of different ingredients in beauty industry and booked everything that could make my skin better.
I also saw your video of past experiences and everything on retinoid-tretin
I made my day and night care disciplined and consistent, i made a routine of ingredients as per particular day it is and sticked to it, that routine suited me well and within 3 months i had alot better skin but the scars were still very much visible.

Those three months definately improved my skin texture but it still wasn't enough and i was only using serum to make my skin withstand a full fledged retinoid liek tretinoin, In March i finnally ordered tretinoin 0.05% (sadly i didn't got 0.0025% in the market) i started applying once a week and m still continuing it as once a week and to my surprise i didn't got any sort of irritation or redness except skin peeling, its there and slugging once a week really helps to counter it. My Acne scars have 40% reduced and i know rest will take 1-2 years easily but i m really happy that my technique with the help of you and other good youtubers brought me results.

I used benzoyl peroxide for a couple months to treat a breakout I had while I was recovering my skin barrier with cerave. Once I got my breakout fixed I starter using over the counter retinol 0.3%. Now it's been a month and I noticed I don't get any irritation at all (I also have been doing the sandwich method Moisturizer + Retinol + Moisturizer at night). I use vaseline under my eyes to apply a bit of retinol there as as well.
Been thinking of upgrading to Tretinoin since it seems my skin might be able to tolerate but I was a little worried that using vaseline with it could give me breakouts again, since I have a acne prone skin :C

Hi Jennifer. Love your no-nonsense content, direct and informative. Question: as a long time Tretinoin user, I have been unable to acclimate its use to the neck area (causes redness and irritation). In lieu of Tretinoin for the neck, what would you recommend with similar potency that the delicate skin on the neck can tolerate? Thank you!

Maybe try Retinaldehyde. Still vitamin A, not as strong as tretinoin, but stronger than retinol. It may take a bit longer, but it’s not nearly as irritating.

I've been using for 16 years! Started when I was 18. I've used so many formulas but I've really been loving Altreno. Have you tried it?

I did all this process with Differin and had great results. Skin has a better texture, brighter, and acne is way more manageable. I tried once to switch to tret or tazarotene but got too high % so couldn't stick to them due to side effects. I have to say at those rounds I wasn't too motivated since I got great results on Differin. I'm happy to carry on with Differin since my skin is extremely sensitive and roseacea prone so should be better suited in the realm of strong retinoids

I’ve been on .025% Tret for almost 6 months. I’ve been blessed not to get the “uglies” even after working my way up to every night or every other but I can’t wear Vaseline or other petrolatum brands (or any eye cream) under or around my eyes. I do use it around my nose folds and on lips. I’m just very careful not to get it near the eyes. My biggest issue is finding a sunscreen. My skin has had allergic reactions to 3 mineral sunscreens-one on whole face and another, only around my eyes. I’m home bound at moment so am not outside in the sun. I try to stay in dark rooms away from windows until I can find a sunscreen my skin can tolerate because otherwise, I’m just wasting Tretinoin & potentially making my skin more prone to aging and Sun spots. I was going to pay $30 to ship Australian sunscreen to US; it seems to have the strongest, best filters (compared to US & potentially better than K or J beauty), but I’m now scared to try chemical sunscreens given how my skin is reacting to supposedly “gentler” mineral ones. It’s so odd how it doesn’t get irritated by Tretinoin but immediately reacts to sunscreen or a few hours after application. I’m at a total loss. I never had this issue before Tretinoin.

Are you applying Retin-A at all where you put the Vaseline or do you avoid those areas completely?

Hi Jennifer... I love your videos! I'm in my sixties and am trying Retin A again... gave up a few times before because of issues you are talking about in this video. This time, I will stick to it. My question is - should we be putting the cream on wrinkled areas? I saw in another video that doing this would simple make the wrinkles worse... do you have any idea what I should be doing?

The gel version isn't compatible with other skincare . I like to incorporate a toner, essences, and a serum. The gel clumps up whereas the cream is flawless with blending other skincare

I started using differin gel/castor oil because of your videos and I’m happy I did! Do you think it’s okay to use a vitamin c serum in the mornings? (Differin 3x/week pm) I have acne scars on my chin that I need help fading away faster. Thank you 🙌🏻

There are lots of comments about wayne's video, she has already told us she didn't have any procedure done. So stop with all the accusations. If you dont believe it so be it, and if you do that's good too. We have to remember she did tell us genetic factor, her diet and all kinds of movements (plus lifestyle factors) must also be taken into consideration.

Yeah she's asian, I believe that she didn't have botox. Wayne might have been referring to someone else tho, and even if he wasn't, I'm sure a lot of ppl who tout tretinoin as God's serum have had botox
