    Incredible! One of the greatest pieces of orchestration ever! I always thought I was the only person who not only loved this song, but loved, even more, this extended version which only appears in one episode. My friends thought I was nuts, but when I first got the Honeymooners in DVD 20 years ago, I would replay this version over and over again. There is something so hauntingly beautiful about this piece which words cannot describe. It brings me back to childhood, this area (NYC metro), WPIX New York (Channel 11) and a host of emotions-- all of which are beautiful. I agree that there is something a bit melancholy about the ending versus the opening. But that it what makes this piece so magical. So glad I found this and see that so many agree about this wondrous artistry. Thank you, Jackie Gleason!

    Hauntingly beautiful theme than recaptures the mood of NYC at night in the 1950’s. That chord sequence at :23 to :30 is a masterpiece!

    The greatest TV theme written by the greatest himself, Jackie Gleason. As an adult listening to it, I am transported, through the miracle of music, back to my childhood when life was so less complicated. Hauntingly beautiful and replete with majestic crescendos and subtle chord changes, this theme (especially the closing credits with a bridge) is sheer brilliance from the opening tympani to the closing brass and strings.

    Jackie Gleason himself composed this, such a beautiful song, but yet there's an element of sadness to it, as well; can't really explain it. RIP to The Great One! ❤

      It’s bitter sweet.. I can listen to this over and over and over - yes soothing with both sadness and happiness .. melancholy.. depending what you think about as you listen and what it triggers in your thoughts. Sad part.. all but one of the are still alive but this brings them to life in your mind as you listen .. this Music can be very hypnotic ..

      Johnny, I thought this longer, unforgettable tv ending theme is exactly as you described it: majestic and an outstanding piece of music ("You're My Greatest Love") "written" by Jackie Gleason, although he never knew how to write the notes himself; the notes were transcribed on a music sheet after he described to the person what he was thinking on how it sounds. A genius in so many areas: comedy, acting, and music! A legend unfortunately lost at only 71 on Jun. 24, 1987.

    A lot of older people in like they're 60, 70, 80s or even '90s, ask me how can a young guy like me watch these older classic TV shows, that's easy to answer. I may have grown up through the 1980s but I still enjoy these old classic TV shows. Just to name a few that I enjoy watching Three stooges, The Honeymooners, Toby gillis, Little rascals, and then there's shows like Archie Bunker, Sanford and son, The Jeffersons, gidget, The flying nun, newhart, The Mary Tyler Moore show. These shows are still amazing and wonderful and I don't care what anybody says, I prefer watching these then the newer ones today. To me I think that these older classic ones have heart, soul, character, and a lot of love and to these ones Plus they make sense and you can understand them unlike other shows today.

    The opening theme credits has a more joyful Sound to it whereas the closing theme has a melancholy type of feel to it. It is certainly beautiful but very sad. RIP Jackie Gleason the “great one” Art Carney and Audrey Meadows.

    As Alejandro says, this beautiful theme always reminds me of my late parents, especially my father who looked like a thinner version of Jackie Gleason, had the same kind of personality as Ralph Kramden and who enjoyed watching reruns of The Honeymooners (I was only 2 years old when the original show ended in 1956). My father even could do a convincing imitation of Gleason. It mostly brings back fond memories of when my parents got along - I was a little kid from the late 50s to the 60s - and TV was a part of our family entertainment. I cry every time I play this theme, first of all, because it's such a beautiful song (written by Gleason), but also because it reminds me so much of my growing up years with my late parents and the fact that these incredible actors - Gleason, Carney & Meadows - are no longer with us. It saddens me, as well, to know that these Golden Years of Television are gone and will never be repeated. Many thanks for posting this great Honeymooners theme song, "You're My Greatest Love" (as Ralph Kramden would say to Alice - "Baby, You're the Greatest!").

    • @charles2241
      @charles2241 Před 5 lety

      Mark, I think it helps the mystique of this tune to have been almost on a lullaby level. That's because often in reruns a number of decades later, it would play as perhaps the last show you would see before going to bed, and so, they made a tune that in such a sweet way could be giving you a lullaby many years in the future. I would equate this tune for a lullaby function, every bit as much as the ending theme to Sea Hunt (which can and does still come on very late nights), or Star Hustler. There's just something almost magical about the days when there were just basically three channels, and the stations weren't running twenty four hours a day, and in such atmosphere, you would treasure these sort of tunes more than they would anywhere else, because they were sort of the end with the contact with the outside world for another night, from your tv friends.

    "You're My Greatest Love" (lyrics)
    Lyric by Bill Templeton. Music by Jackie Gleason.
    Copyright 1955 Songsmiths, Inc.
    "You're my greatest love
    You're heavenly, you're stars from above
    You set my heart afire with desire constantly.
    You're my greatest dream
    To hold you close is my greatest scheme
    The vision of your charms in my arms haunting me.
    I can't recall the words that all the poems seem to reveal
    Simple words like "heart" and "soul" hold the love that I feel.
    You're my greatest love
    For me there will be no greater love
    So give your heart to me, let this be our great love."

    • @charles2241
      @charles2241 Před 5 lety +1

      @@tonycevallos7513 To me though, I don't think of Mom and Dad, now gone as well. Oh, we watched the show plenty, mostly in reruns, but that music just seemed to be of another prior era, maybe from the thirties. My parents were born in 30 and 35 respectively, but they would had been too young to enjoy this sort of music in the thirties, is what I think.
      I guess it's just the show itself, as those guys were living so primitive, it strikes me as actually a fifties/sixties show that was about the thirties. I guess in reality, the show was fairly much the way a lot of fifties shows were (too old for me), where they weren't trying to look rundown, though it was central to this show, but just that basic tv shows would have to reach pretty firmly into the sixties to start making sets look anything glamorus
      I guess you could say, the movies from the forties looked much more glossy than this show, such that even though it was shot later than those movies, it gives off the appearance it's from a decade before, when indeed movies were also fairly shabby in comparison.
      There was nothing as sweet as hearing this theme just before going to bed, or if you woke up in the middle of the night, hearing the closing of the Sea Hunt theme. There's just so much beautiful music in themes. I often found in my youth, that I was disappointed by many pop sings, because while many started off excellently, once they got into the body of the song, it went sub-par. I think The Invaders theme is a case in point. It is very excellent for quite a while at the beginning, but then it gets into some vibes which are quite contrary to it, but, I guess especially on that song you couldn't keep the same thing throughout. I think a theme that counters that entirely, including this Honeymooners one, is the X-Files theme - still, to this day, quite a chilling theme.

    Wow I thought it was just me, there is something to this theme so nostalgic, it makes me sad and transports me to my childhood when I watched this late night on channel 11 wpix in the bronx. My sunday nights started a t 11 with the odd couple, then the honeymooners and finished up with star trek! But theres something magical about that Honeymooners theme, moves my soul.
    Thank you Mr. Gleason for being a part of my childhood.
