- A lot of people say that when at the pattern board we should rest the gun on something and then aim the rib and bead at the cross on the pattern board...if we just mount our gun...look at the cross and shoot...then we are replicating what we actually do when we are shooting clays...using this method we may actually discover that our gun is not shooting where we are looking...is that not a valuable piece of information to have?
Very good advice! What amazes me is most people when they buy a rifle they spend lots of time sighting in a rifle and seeing where the rifle shoots. BUT, when it comes to a shotgun very few people do what you so wisely suggest. And that is sighting in your Shotgun. I have seen some brand-name shotguns do some pretty bizarre things so how are you going to know what is happening if you don't test it first. And also realize you'll have to probably try at least 10 different brands of cartridges before one will work Optimum for that shotgun and choke combination.

Good advice. I was at a turkey shoot 2 weeks ago and a guy had a shotgun that was in the family for decades. He wasn't hitting well and I asked him when he last patterned it. He said it hadn't been shot in 40 years but he KNEW it shot a tight pattern. I laughed and went home with the meat I won with a patterned Browning.

Great video sir, yes your right about the cartridges shooting with holes in them. Crazy but so true, it also looks like the cheaper ones have many holes in them

Hi Roger, I've patterned my guns before and always did it the wrong way apparently. I used to AIM using the front bead !!
I took your advice and LOOKED at the center cross and found a tremendous difference.
A really super piece of advice.

simonbon...some people say you should benchrest the shotgun and aim at the cross using the beads...I can't see the point of that because we just look and shoot ...and our goal is to get the gun to shoot where we look...thanks and stay well.

Malachy...no great knowledge on the dt11...I have shot one several times they are a good gun and very well made...one guy at the club had issues with his dt11...eventually Beretta gave him a new one...but overall i think they are a good gun..stay well and thanks
Hello Roger,I really appreciate your straightforward and if I use the word simplistic please don't be offended because that's exactly what people are able to remember.How many people on the pattern plate are told not to 'aim', but you were much more correct and understand "don't look down the rib and use the bead. It's obvious but only when you've actually been told.question felt or plaswad for you?

You should use a different thumbnail for every video, makes finding and identifying specific videos easier in a sea of vidoes all with the same preview image.

good vidéo .very interested by how setting the pitch...but for me It depends mainly in which direction (angle) you shoot.for Trap shooting for example and as every targets go up the main angle to setthe pitch is 30 degrees above the horizontal Line.
Tintin...the pitch of the gun is the angle of the back of the butt stock relative to the barrels...if a gun has zero pitch...when you stand it up ...the barrels will be perpendicular to the wall...good to hear from you ...stay well
Hello from the USA! How do you like the 686 SP sporting 12/30? I’m getting ready to buy one and I’ll be using it for sporting clays, late season skiddish high dove, and waterfowl. It will be primarily used however for sporting clays
James ...i was very happy with my 686...i traded it in for a 690 because my 686 did not have an adjustable stock...it is a good reliable gun!!!
Does the adjustable stock afford you better breaks?
Hi Roger, great videos. I shoot primarily skeet and was wondering how far away I should stand to pattern the gun for skeet.
Skeet is shot closer than trap...but patterning it is the same...shoot 4 shots at 16-20 yds AIMING with the beads...then move to 35 yds and just shoot 4 shots at the target WITHOUT looking at the gun...that will tell you if your gun shoots where you look...if left right up or down then you will have to make adjustments ...stay well!

G'day Roger. I have a question about patterning shotguns. I recently bought a new gun (Churchill sporter) so I head out to the club. I found that I was missing more than usual. (I usually shoot 100 out of 100 consistently in DTL single barrel with my old shotgun) So I took the gun to a place where I could check how it patterns. The bottom barrels point of impact was a lot lower than I had anticipated. The centre of the sheet did wear some of the impact but most of it was way under which explains why I was missing at the club. The top barrel on the other hand was about 70/30 which I'm fine with. My question is do you think the two barrels should have such a different point of impact at 20metres?

Gamoto...the bottom barrel is usually 60/40 or 70/30 ...top and bottom barrels should converge at 40 yards...pattern the gun at 40 yards (the distance we usually shoot the clay at) and see how the pattern is. Good luck and best wishes!!!

I'd be sending that gun back to the distributor. Ask them to check it out when in fact the two impact points are different they should give you a different gun.
so the bottom barrel shoots first?! And how do you shoot from the same barrel repeatedly?! does the 3/4 choke go on the bottom one and the full on the top?
